Windows 11 24H2 bug prevents it from receiving new updates

Microsoft confirms Windows 11 KB5044284 / KB5046617 can't install new updates

Issues might occur with media which installs the October or November update

When using media to install Windows 11, version 24H2, the device might remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates. This occurs only when the media is created to include the October 2024, or November 2024, security updates as part of the installation (these updates were released between October 8, 2024 and November 12, 2024).

Please note, this only occurs when utilizing media - such as CD and USB flash drives - to install Windows 11, version 24H2. This issue does not occur for devices where the October 2024 security update or the November 2024 security updates are installed via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

Workaround: To prevent issues, do not install Windows 11, version 24H2 which installs the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates. Instead, ensure that media used to install Windows 11, version 24H2, includes the December 2024 monthly security update (released December 10, 2024), or later.

Next steps: We are working on a resolution and will provide more information when it is available.

Affected platforms:

Client: Windows 11, version 24H2
Server: None

In a long string of broken updates, now Microsoft has managed to break Windows Update. So users can't even use Windows updates to fix this bug.
The 3 Trillion dollar company, can't spend a bit of money doing Q&A, before releasing updates to the main channel.

I only moved to Windows 11 earlier this year as MS said they are stopping support for Win 10, i haven't updated to 24H2 and won't until this shit is sorted.

Windows 10 worked great, why did MS fuck about and release this shit?

Different places makes this sound different.

Some places makes it sound that if you;
1. Made an Installer on dvd or usb using the Microsoft Media Tool in October or November you will be affected.

Other sites makes it sound like;
2. If you manually apply the October or November patch(es) to a dvd / usb install media then install using them you will be affected.

not sure if any updates were installed on background, but yesterday night the keyboard of my laptop stopped working.
restarts were useless, but a forced reboot fixed it somehow

Reading the articles, regular joes using automatic update are not affected. I wonder if "from media" would also impact IT admins who install these patches from a network drive, if so that's pretty bad, but if it's literally just people who patch via a USB stick or DVD then it's sort of understandable how this may have made it past QA, especially if you have to combine the two updates together.

Hmmm ... this could be a problem for the IT department where I work. When we deploy images to new PCs/laptops in our organization we always use the most recent Windows ISO as the base image.

So the shit update bugs Windows update, so to fix the update, people need to update, however because of the shit update, it prevents users from updating their system.

We're in update-ception people.

I'm sitting here watching the blue update sign for both of my machines and honestly wondering how long I'm gonna have to wait until I can safely update this disastrous update.

Linux adoption is increasingly becoming a priority for me.

So it sounds like this only impacts people that do a fresh install from media of 24H2. Not people who already had it on their system and updated.

I'm currently having an issue with my laptop battery (W10). It could be the battery's fault, but it was working perfectly fine the day before it decided to nope out. Now I have to keep it plugged in just to use it.

A few days prior, I did a Windows Update. Coincidence? I think not 🤔...

I'm building a new PC this week. It is better to install windows 10 and wait?

Stick with windows 10 until they end security updates for it. Then you can get a free upgrade to Windows 11 (or you can upgrade to Windows 11 beforehand if you fancy it). Also if you upgrade to 11 you can also go back to 10.Windows 10 gives you the flexibility of having both options.

They'll get it fixed like they always do.

Took 11 iterations but microsoft finally gave us the feature we've all been wanting: an end to windows updates. Kudos lads.

Might not hurt to stash a couple of these...

I had 24h2 running earlier this year. But I did a clean install a few months ago after upgrading storage. Now 24h2 isn't even an upgrade option.
I don't remember having any issues with it during the time I was using it, but then I only use this PC for gaming.

You need to wait him to make another clean install before posting again.
Funnily enough, this PC originally came with W10 in 2021, then I upgraded it with W11 the year after, and this year it was upgraded to "24H2/W12". So it's basically been the same install since 2021. So yes it sure as fuck seems to works well for me :)
