Windows 11: Let's Be Honest, There Are Big Issues, Right?

Good grief, what an awful update. I've been using Linux nearly 100% of my gaming time on PC for months now; would be scared to boot back into Win 11 and have this crazy shit break my SSDs.

Abandoned Windows back when they announced 11. When they cancelled Windows 10X and from its ashes rose Windows 11, I decided I want no part of it.
Every day since them I'm so glad I've moved off to Linux. Haven't looked back since.

May not be for everyone if you're stuck in the "anti cheat" gaming world, but works very well for quite literally everything else.

What Linux you on?

I think I've had enough of Windows

CachyOS. It's incredibly fast for everything, including gaming.

As Doom_master1122 Doom_master1122 says, if you play games requiring anti cheat stuff, do some specific game research beforehand, as a lot of them don't work with Linux.
For everything else, I've had no problems. I play a lot of WoW and tons of different Steam games, the only thing that could make me reboot into Win 11 right now would be to play PC Game Pass games, but I have no reason to do that currently.

Have any of you experienced this after the latest w11 24h2 update?
My PC seems fine so far but kinda concerning to hear about
Of course not. These "reports" are often based on a tiny random sample of incidents that could be "caused" by that randomness in itself. These sites makes money on clickbait and don't care.

With that said, I'm glad there are "auditors" out there, and "reports" can be useful as a canary in the coalmine. And there could indeed be something valuable in this report that could be pointing at something that should be patched, idk.

But just as an example of selective reporting here: The original article (not the linked one) say the issue can be fixed by simply restarting the PC. Did they omit this information knowingly..? This is why I don't trust "journalists".

Some guy claimed he bricked his SSD just by using the sleep function as that was enough data to do it in.

Some reports are saying it is drives, either SSD or HDD, with controllers from a very specific manufacturer that are failing in very reproducible way. Other people are chiming in and blaming a failure they experienced three years ago on it.

I built a PC in late 2019, looking ahead to the release of cyberpunk and the 3000 series cards.

Fast forward to the following fall, CP was completely busted and the 3000s were impossible to get.

At that point I said, "fuck this" and just committed to consoles and a Mac going forward. Never looked back.

I just don't see the benefits of PC as being worth how many negatives there are. As long as windows is the primary OS to handle this stuff, I'm probably out.

Luckily, I don't, it'll mainly be single player stuff anyway :messenger_sunglasses:

Nor I really, not a fan of subscriptions as of late :messenger_unamused:

Nice one though, I've still got an older PC that's still set up, so I'll give it a go :)

I higly recommend you wait until fix. The last time this happens people lost all their SSD data.

I dread going to Win 11. I have Win 11 on my surface and I fucking hate it. Worst case scenario for my main PC is I'll log on to my MS account and purchase the 1 year support for 30 bucks. In the mean time, I'll figure out how to get that enterprise version of Windows 10 installed.
I'll probably do something similar. Admittedly I used Bing enough that I think I can get free support for a year.

I dual boot Windows and CachyOS, it works pretty well for me

I use 3 partitions: one for each OS, and a shared one for games

I download games from Steam on Windows and I can play them on CachyOS as well without futher installation

I just uninstalled the update and then paused my updates until mid September when hopefully the next patch is out with a fix.
I'm planning to buy and preload Gears of War Reloaded soon and don't want my system to brick.

I just upgraded from Windows 10 to 11 and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised considering what people have been saying about it. Apart from the retarded right click-menu in Explorer which I had to fix, I think it seems great. No complaints really.

What file system are you using for your shared game partition?

My OS NVMe is using a Phison controller, but I never install on it, all programs and game gets installed on two other NVMe's that are not using a Phison controllers.

Make sure to do a thread here if you get that figured out. I'm changing over this morning to a new work computer that runs 11 and it's absolutely brutal. Worse than I remember.

Btrfs should also work on both Windows and Linux with some additional drivers

I haven't tried it myself, but should perform better than NTFS on Linux
I have been afraid to install Btrfs drivers in Windows, lol. Win11 is bad enough as it is.

My main problem is that I am on Nvidia 5080 and Nvidia drivers are still meh on Linux. I really should have just stuck with 9070XT in retrospect.

No.
And unless there's some more data than some people having their SSDs fail during some time period I wouldn't pay much attention as SSDs tend to fail sometimes, and this has zero relation to any Windows updates.

I havent had any issues with 11, infact i liked most of the new features.

The smart move is avoiding updates for a few months though, just so all the bugs are ironed out 🧠

exFAT also works on literally anything.

And that's probably the best choice. I had an absolute nightmare yesterday with an NTFS drive in Linux (permissions!) which caused me to have to go back to Windows until I can sort the data and wipe the drive. Normal access was fine but trying to share things from it across the network with SAMBA caused problems.

I would keep Linux and Windows stuff separated. You're just asking for trouble if not. Play/install everything on Linux and the few games you "need" Windows just install them over there.

Is this ok with big files like NTFS?
exFAT was created for this exact reason to support bigger files. It supports files up to a Petabytes, it's fast and supports data recovery as well. It's an easy choice if you are going to use Windows, MacOS and Linux. Plus tvs, PlayStation etc. all use exFAT partitions, ironically Xbox as well

white flag for me;
the latest update ate up all the space I recently recovered, converting a good bunch of retrogames to .chd

proud effect... vanished :messenger_poop:

Just out of curiosity, are those drivers stable yet? Last time I checked, the only Windows drivers for btrfs I found had "in development"/"unstable" plastered all over the (sparse) documentation. And that's kinda a no-go for a file system (imho).

You know the answer for Linux ? GNOME/KDE?

That's whats holding me from switching to linux.. HDR haven't worked for me when trying to switch OS before.
This is also the only thing holding me back from getting rid of windows completely and switching to linux full time. Does Special K HDR work across the board now under Linux?

HDR now works in both KDE and Gnome. But it has to be switched on manually, but apparently the KDE team is working on some solution for Auto HDR to engage

WinBtrfs is something people should stay far away from. Those drivers have caused massive shit for many to the point of not even being able to fix it by chrooting into your system to repair.

i dunno why Xbox people have this pipe dream of Valve and MS teaming up against Playstation or using steam as Xbox adjacent in the war against PS.

Windows is too bloated, has other priorities and people dislike it overall.

I don't think Gabe has any intention to throw a bone to MS if they decide to make their own "console". with the Steam OS, Valve basically owns the PC handheld market.
Not only that but since googles inception everyone is now wanting the users data. It's more valuable to them than the $99 license fee. They are never going to give that up.

Os's are going to get worse either way AI without a doubt and collecting more data

w11 has drm and bloated with unnecessary things. the start menu is terrible as well.

As I said I never tried it myself, but it seems that it's still not good on Windows:

Yeah well, every OS is bloated and has unnecessary things. I can live with that. I don't really spend most of my time with the start meny anyway. It's not like I have a better option for what I'm using my computer for so it's fine 🙂
