Anyone boot camping windows 8? I was thinking about selling my MacBook Air but thought maybe I could keep it a little longer to try out windows 8 on

Anyone know if the keyboard/touchpad drivers work ok on the air or if there's any problems with boot camp?

Keyboard shortcuts? What are we, rocket scientists?!

The person on the previous page who mentioned not being able to right click files in Search was right. That is really dumb. Fix it!

I can understand why they don't want to let people put file shortcuts on the Start menu though. Some people would make it into a damned mess.

Alright, i'm havign some trouble installing this on my laptop. I downloaded the .iso from Dreamspark, and used the Windows Disc Image Burner to get it on a DVD, but that DVD isn't being recognized by my laptop's disc drive. I put it in, nothing happens, as far as the drive is concerned there's no disc in there at all.

Any reccomendations? Is there another way I could do this? I've read about a USB option but I don't have a big enough flash drive. Anything I can do to get this to work?

wow... that is quite the goldmine.

gahhh why does it take so long for my school to renew my dreamspark prem :(

I know your pain. What's worse is I need dreamspark for the software we're supposed to be using in class :l Hopefully the 'refresher' part lasts long~

Really looking forward to playing with Windows 8 though. Way more than homework >.>

You might just try burning another DVD. Maybe different program or settings? Also, this is probably moot, but give your laptop a reset... it's crazy what drivers will do sometimes when they get angry.

Editx2: Can your other pc read the dvd still?

Maybe your iso corrupted? If not you could always mount the iso (or extract the data) and run the install from inside Windows.

Yeah. I won't go on anymore about this as I haven't actually used it. There are good features in windows 8, I know, but my concern is purely to do with how well a mouse works with a UI that has touchscreen as the main focus and the way it is split into two parts almost. The beauty of the traditional start menu is that it has everything in one place. You want to go to 'my documents' or 'my pictures' or simply shut down the computer, it is all in one place and a simple click away. Also I worry that metro, and more modern apps won't have the functionality you might expect it to. That certain things are sacrificed in order to make it user-friendly to touchscreen users.

All that stuff is there in metro.... its just more logically organized now. For instance why would you need/want to view your pictures from a startmenu? It makes more logical sense to show those to you when you actually need them (when you open the photos app) or in the case of documents when you are in office or onenote mx. The file picker shows only when you actually need to use it. I find the people that don't like it are the ones that are not willing to rethink the way the pc should be used and are only interested in the using what they know (and that is very much a core principle of win8 and everything will be better from the foundation being laid here)... the multitasking goes into this as well and needing to close apps. Once you get used to win8 you just don't care because windows itself manages things for you.

And the two part thing is a necessary evil for this transition.... they could have done the apple thing and come out with a separate tablet os and desktop os but you would have seen something similar happen with them that has happened to apple. The ipad being held back by not having real productivity software and osx not having near the app store of ios. Win8 is very much about bridging those two and giving you a single device capable of running both which of course that will take new hardware to fully realize that vision. That is why now is the perfect time to start this transition.... with win7 being entrenched they can use the next few years to get hardware designed for gestures/touch into the market and get all those complex apps moved to a touch first model so they will fully utilize all the new hardware. It will probably be the next major version before all of that is fully in place but again that is why now is the perfect time to start this foundation.

I've made 2 DVDs, one from the Windows burner, one from Roxio Creator. Same thing happens with both.

Only other PC here is a Windows XP desktop, but it can at least read it to the point that it tells me installation won't work.

Hm, I have Daemon Tools Lite installed here, could I use that to mount the .iso? I feel like this might be kind of a dumb question... >.>

Use 7Zip or WinRar to extract the ISO and run setup.exe. You should be good to go!

You could use daemon tools as well.

Has anyone here tried out Visual Studio 2012 now that it's up on MSDN/AA as well?

I see it's labeled as RC. I'm assuming that isn't the same as RTM, so I haven't grabbed a copy yet. I want to make sure I get the final version.

I'm a little curious as to why OS's don't seem to have built in virtual drives these days.

It's out already: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/

There's a 90-day trial if you want to test.

The interface displeases me a little... Everything is a little grey so folders and etc doesn't standout much...

It has some neat new features though (MyWork or something like that which allows you to create snapshots of your working copy, so you can context switch between tasks, code clone searching to find similar pieces of code, some useful interface tweaks and some more that i can't remember right now.)

In short: Other than the looks, i loved it :P

just wanted to mention again that there is a fully functional hyper-v workstation available as a feature in win 8. Virtual machines go go go.

Hmm... have to keep in mind to turn SmartScreen off asap when I install Windows 8:

To recap, here are the concerns posed by SmartScreen in Windows 8:

1. Windows 8 will, by default, inform Microsoft of every app downloaded and installed by every user. This puts Microsoft in a compromising, omniscient situation where they are capable of retaining information on the application usage of all Windows 8 users, thus posing a serious privacy concern. The user is not informed of this while installing and setting up Windows 8.

2. Windows 8 appears to send this information to Microsoft to a server that relies on Certificate Authorities for authentication and supports an outdated and insecure method of encrypted communication. It is possible that these insecurities could allow a malicious third party to target a Windows 8 user and learn which applications they are using. This allows them to profile the user and decide how to best exploit their personal selection of applications and their computing habits.

I was about to reply that windows 8 has native mounting and it felt good to not have to install an app to do it, but then I realized the issue was installing from an older OS.

I want to grab the full version for free off of MSDNAA, but there's like 10 different versions.

Mother of god

Final version should be there, I have it through Dreamspark.

Haven't used it much yet, just opened a project I was working with on campus today to make sure that a project from 2010 worked without a hitch and made a few little enhancements.

I'm not fond of this idea of opening apps instead of files.
Google seems to push for that on Android and it's bugged me there as well.
I think it only works in a few limited circumstances, basically for things that you treat as single massive collections of one kind of thing, like music.

My work projects are organized into folder trees, which have all sorts of different file types inside them: Word, Excel, TXT, images, videos, PDFs, etc.
The folder tree keeps the files relevant to that project together, even files that don't support any kind of "tag" functionality, like TXT.
The only practical way of looking through the collection is with a generic file explorer, since I don't even know what all types of content are in the collection until I've looked through it.
And when it comes time to move the entire collection from one system to another, it'd be kind of silly if I had to open a half dozen different apps, one for each type of file, in order to copy everything.

So, since I need to be accustomed to using a file explorer to work with those collections and to communicate with the rest of the world that transfers information in the form of files and folders, then it's easier to just use the file explorer for everything than it is to flip back and forth between "open the file" and "open the app first" approaches.

Thanks for the help guys, got this set up and I've been messing with it for a few hours.

It's kind of strange how it now really feels like I have two totally separate OS's running, yet they're still connected in weird ways. It definitely doesn't feel worse than Windows 7, in fact it feels almost exactly the same in desktop mode. It just seems like I have a tablet OS attached for some reason. Some of the functionality quirks are just weird though, like the little "show desktop" corner being invisible, but still there, but also in the same spot that triggers the charms bar, which has it's own little quirks.

I do really like the potential of fullscreen Metro apps, though. I can see myself getting a ton of use out of those.

Apps be com'in!
A.b.c. :lol

But I'm not a fan of the Cyberlink app's interface:

1. Is this any different than what iOS, Android, every linux package management system , Steam does? Chrome also has a similar feature to check for malicious web sites.

2. He is wrong about it beng insecure - it does not use SSLv2 and there is no supporting info that the cert approach it uses is insecure. Read the reddit comments on this.

Gizmodo is standing up for Windows 8 in this recent article.

See, I don't trust Microsoft. I don't think they have PC gaming interest at heart, beyond providing a Store front. I don't want them to take over because chances are, they will provide a weaker service than everyone else.

So yeah, I would worry about an entity like Microsoft shoving everyone out of the DD space.

It's kind premature to do so no? Especially as Windows 8 is just as open a platform as Windows 7.

When you think they have no interest and a weaker service, how do you think are they ging to "shove out everyone"?

I think they have a much bigger interest than the other services.... I am not just a single platform gamer anymore.... I want all my games on all my devices from phone to pc/tablet to tv. Right now xbox is closest to giving me that and it sounds like they will get even closer with the windows 8 store serving as the basis for all their future products.

Steam is also moving in this direction as well with their tv interface but they are offering nothing in the mobile phone/tablet space and to me that is just as important as any other platform these days.

Because the temptation is there? If you shove everyone out, you can provide a poor product and still move copies.

How do they accomplish that first part?

Engadget has some images and a video of some Fujitsu devices. I am really digging the transformer form factor with digitizer and can't wait to see what companies come up with.

One thing I can figure out is why don't Windows 8 keyboards have physical charm keys? Perhaps some do and I just haven't seen it but it seems like that would be a pretty obvious feature to include.
surface does, I assume others will as well.

So this is possible? I might give this a shot then.

I upgraded by running from inside my Windows 7 machine. It was a fairly new Win7 install so I was curious and it worked well. I had maybe one program that didn't survive the transition but it told me ahead of time.

See, I don't trust Microsoft. I don't think they have PC gaming interest at heart, beyond providing a Store front.

I also don't trust MS. I also don't trust Valve, which has just recently proven they don't have PC gaming interest at heart beyond taking fee from games sold for that platform.
I do however trust users and other companies, and ultimately neither will allow Microsoft or Valve to screw pcgaming on.

Microsoft doesn't have the strenght to push something like that through (and even if they did, they would get sued into oblivion in a manner that would make the whole IE anti trust a child's play). If they tried no gamers would upgrade to Windows 9, or somebody would make free Windows-compatibile alternative, which would be even worse for MS.

One thing you can trust however, is Microsoft's complete incompetence when it comes to PCgaming. For them to even consider such move, Windows Store gaming and W8 services would have become incredibly successful and we all know they will be crap and they won't become popular.

That said, big companies (both devs and publishers) fear Windows Store and that's a good thing. I honestly doubt you will see anything beyond mobile-like games on Windows Store

I got a new ThinkPad X230 yesterday and running the final Windows 8 has not been fun. It's my first experience with the OS so it's wacky, and a lot of the X230's functions just don't work yet. Really tempted to go back to 7.
