try it for a few days. it has a lot of improvements over 7 and metro is great. "hate the garbage" without having used it? great attitude

I used it briefly, didn't have a lot of time to sit down with it. I just hated that my start menu was gone and that everything was Xbox Huge squares in the metro interface.

How did you tend to use the Start menu? It's mostly about getting used a new workflow.

Some programs I use daily are kept pinned on my start menu. I've only got one or two things pinned on my taskbar. No icons save for recycle bin on my desktop.

Then you should get used to the Metro start menu pretty fast. Getting to pinned tiles is very fast once your muscle memory knows where they are.

Either left click lower left corner or use the Windows Key and then your tile. It becomes second nature.

One thing i did recently was to pin my recycle bin to my metro Windows 8 app screen so my desktop is completely clean.

anyway, the OP should probably have some hints on how to use the OS.
I haven't used W8 yet, but there's just something absurd about everything presented.

Right clicking on Apps brings the extra menu, which is all the way at the bottom -- so you have to mouse all the way down; why not a simple context menu? Even for touch screens, contexts menus work fine.

Then on the desktop side, the task bar still has the W7 look, but the start menu button is gone, and then there are charms on the right, which have the W8 metro-style. It seems like they didn't bother to make a better Aero-Metro WDE, so it's inconsistent.

I get that they reduced having to click the start orb, but still, some visual representation like a hover would have been fine.

Is this the first "App" OS vs Desktop OS trapped inside one OS?

Windows 8 |OT| Just 3 more years 'til Windows 9
I hope for two.

Reading this I would actually like:

Windows 8 |OT| It's fine.
That can sound like a passive aggressive version of "it's not fine."

Having a clean desktop is weird. It must be a transition phase where all programs/apps are launched from the start screen. If there wasn't such a stark visual contrast between "Metro" and legacy apps it would be a really cool OS. I can already think of cool ideas.

final looks different than the preview versions:

If you notice it says "Consumer Preview", there has been a lot of iteration since then. We've since had the Release Preview and then the RTM.

im against a "funny" sarcastic title. windows 8 gets enough shit at this point, an official thread should be positive discussion and sarcastic titles just encourage trolls etc

fine

Windows 8 |OT| It's hip to be square

see, it's about Metro and Microsoft trying to be cool.

It should? Isn't that more of an astroturf thread?

At least it should be about "discussion". Just make it something like

Windows 8 |OT|

or

Windows 8 |OT| Windows RT

to cover both and be done with it. Not that I mind a funny title, but it should not be sarcastic or something, that just invites trolls

After a little bit of use, I am really getting used to the application and activity-centric stuff. Having the file system there is great for transitioning and obviously essential as an underlying principle, but yesterday I got through a whole day of fairly serious laptop use without going back to the desktop once.

Also the startup times on my Samsung series 9 were already quick on 7, but now it's ridiculous. Oh and oddly having mail and calendar as separate apps (as opposed to outlook's all in one approach) is weirdly useful.

Windows 8 |OT| not that great but people are trying to convince themselves that it is regardless. I mean it's not bad, but yeah. Also [witty joke].

How's that?

Windows 8 |OT|
Windows 8 |OT| Think Different!
Windows 8 |OT| of people bitching about Windows 8
Windows 8 |OT| of how do you shut this thing down?
Windows 8 |OT| It's no iOS
Windows 8 |OT| Don't knock it before you try it (extensively)
Windows 8 |OT| of no-compromise* computing (*may contain traces of compromise)

So even in Windows 7 I rarely use the Start Button. My most used apps, aside from Winamp and Chrome are not pinned to the taskbar. Instead I have Quicklaunch, similar to Vista in Windows 7. Desktop | My Computer followed by the >> to list more programs.

Is it possible to do that in Win8? The rare times I do use the start menu I do hit Start on keyboard and type anyway. WinKey - powershell, etc.

Edit: Googled it. You can. For those who hate the Start Screen, would re-adopting this quick launch be an adequate alternative?

yep, you just need to create a GUI on visual basic.

I've been using it for a bit and I do like it. I personally feel it's more geared for the tablet. Using it on a surface is probably so slick. It would be nice if there was a way to just get the traditional start menu in desktop mode. That could just be me not being used to it talking though.

I installed it a few hours ago, now I'm just waiting for my MSDN key to activate it. I have to say, I much preferred the release preview. It looked much better with the glass effect bringing transparency to the windows.

Now, it just feels like a windows 7 with aero turned off. Which is pointless, since the taskbar still has the transparency effect. They should have really left us the choice to activate it or not, I don't understand this choice of design.

For some people it was pointless, but I personally think it brought a sense of depth to the desktop that made me feel comfortable using it. It felt... "modern".

Now, all the shadows and transparency effects are gone. It would have been justified if there was something like a performance boost behind. But I really don't see the point.

I'm not going back to seven, but I'm disappointed by this design choice.

Ah failed humour is sometimes more funny than the intention, haha.

Edit: I'll probably end up upgrading. The lower priced fees are very attractive, always interested in speed gains and optimizations for work as well.

There actually is a performance difference when using aero on laptops and tablets, but it's not relevant when it comes to using a desktop. Windows 8 is all about removing choice anyway :P

Windows 8 |OT| Once you go Metro Windows 8 UI, you never go back
fixed

I would agree with you... if only it wasn't still turned on for the taskbar. It's only turned off for the windows.

Been using W8 for the past week now. Been using HP desktop with an E2180. I love the speed and performance over vista. I like it a lot more than W7 on my laptop also. So far I'm liking metro.

I'm hoping for a nice 7" WinRT tablet to replace my Galaxy Tab.
