Windows 8 Release Preview

I was telling you guys from the very beginning that the apps had barely had any development time by the time the beta came out. They were basically 1-2 milestones behind the OS, especially considering the app platform itself was still changing pretty significantly until RC. It was obvious they didn't just suck, but were woefully incomplete and wouldn't be decently-featured until RTM

All that is fine, as long as there's good post-launch support. And with that I mean regular updates.

Basically the promise that was never fulfilled with the Windows Live suite.

Oh btw Chrome beta changed and now you can press "Relaunch chrome in Windows 8 mode" So now it won't automatically go to metro.

Yeah I would assume/hope that they are still going to have regular development and updates for the foreseeable future.

Alright this is kind of pissing me off. I jumped on the store to check stuff out and downloaded Minesweeper. I jump in and instead of asking if I had a gametag that I wanted associated with ie my old xbox account it autogenerates a new gamertag and I have no idea how to get rid of it so I can migrate my old one. From what I've seen you need to go through the hassle of making a dummy microsoft account and wait 30 days to move the autogen'd one to the dummy and your old one to the current email. Such a pain. It even says to go to xbox.com to change the tag itself but going there says to jump on your xbox to change it. >_>

I was hoping the outlook account I made when it was revamped would work but I'm getting the 30 day error for some reason. Bad enough that I have to pull out my xbox to fail at it.

I've been running the Preview for a few days now. Damn this thing is FAST. Maybe it's just because I haven't polluted the startup with so many services but...

It is fast. When people say the OS is much more snappier then they should believe it and not just say "My Win 7 on a SSD is also fast". It's not the same.

Has anyone tried this in WIndows 8?

IMHO, they need to make it such that when you launch Chrome from a metro app, it launches metro chrome, unless you already have desktop chrome active. Launching from the desktop should launch desktop chrome. (IE style)

I haven't, but I'm interested in knowing as well. I've been debating using a trackpad for my Windows 8 desktop for daily use (with a mouse for gaming), but I'm not sure if it's worth it, or which model to get (looks like that one and the Apple Magic Trackpad are the only real options). Anyone feel that gesture support is worthwhile in Windows 8?

So I finally installed RTM, mainly to check out all the apps that were unavailable in PR and man, I can't believe there's so much crap in the store already. I saw people charging few dollars for apps like a color picker (pick a color and get its hex representation, or type hex number and get color) or something that literally just shows parsed result of ipconfig command. o_O

And I think constantly installing new systems/roms on Android devices spoiled me, because even though the full installation of Windows 8 (from restarting the PC with pendrive plugged in, to the first start of the system) took mere 20 minutes, and yet it was still long for me.

Well they already had it so that metro icon launched metro chrome and desktop icon launched desktop chrome. Sadly they changed it.

This is not really the thread for this, but maybe one of you guys have an idea. I am trying to move away from google, I guess it's just an experiment but we will see. My biggest problem is Google Reader. I have not found any good (web)service thats comparable.

I dont think there are any comparable web services anywhere near as good. I would stick with google reader (perhaps under a new ID that is only used for Google Reader).

Did you get sick of the whole internet knowing what you bought (and then attempting to sell you the same products) everytime you're logged into Google too?

MS Points on their way out?

The controversial currency for Xbox Live and the Zune Marketplace has been widely used across the Xbox 360 to purchase Xbox Live Arcade games, gamertag pictures, and other downloadable content. The system means users have to purchase bundles of points that equate to 80 Microsoft Points for every $1. In our own testing in the final copy of Windows 8, we are now able to pay for music or purchase and rent movies in the Xbox Video store by using a credit card. You're still able to use Microsoft Points, but the store defaults to credit card transactions. A welcome change from the confusion of having to convert Microsoft Points to currency in order to assess the true cost of a rental or purchase.

Microsoft seems very confident about Windows 8:

Microsoft: 400 Million+ Windows 8 Devices in 9 Months, 100,000+ Apps in 90 Days

...

First, the app count. Critics have recently pointed out that Windows Store, the online marketplace for Windows 8, has thus far seen slow app delivery, with just a few thousands apps, most of which are low quality, so far. But that’s going to change. “We’re expecting to aggressively pursue [delivering] 100,000+ apps [to Windows 8’s online marketplace] over the first three months,” Microsoft vice president Keith Lorizio told Beet.tv in a video interview.

As for Windows 8 and its ARM-based brother, Windows RT, Lorizio says the systems will sell much more quickly than its PC-based predecessor, Windows 7. “When Windows 8 goes live on October 26, the [size of the market] is [over] one billion consumers. Our goal … is conservatively over 400 million units in the marketplace by July 1.”

That’s just 9 months for those of you counting fingers, which would set Windows 8/RT on a pace to sell over 530 million units of the new OS in its first year. With PC sales stuck in the 365 to 375 million range for the past few years, you may be wondering how Microsoft intends to hit that lofty target. It’s simple, Lorizio explains: Microsoft is targeting consumers with these releases, not just businesses.

“Windows 8 is going to be really special experience,” he says. “Prior to now … we never had the operating system engaged in that [consumer-oriented] ecosystem. Now, with Windows 8, it’s not just pivoting around productivity, which every Windows release has been known for, we’re now going to pivot off the consumer.”

“There are three things that [will] make Windows 8 a guaranteed success,” he added. “It’s the massive marketplace [of PC users], it’s about providing the same experiences across all devices in the Microsoft family, not just across the PC, but across mobile, across Xbox, and across the phone. And third, we’re going to have beautiful, relevant and personal ads. So all of the ads are going to be integrated, they’re not going to be disruptive to the user experience, but beautiful, relevant and useful.”

How I see it:

I have no doubt that the store will probably be the fastest growing out there but about it selling faster than 7? Ehh not so sure. Also it has been known for awhile that the points system was going away.

Questions:
- Can one replace Skydrive w/ Dropbox/Google Drive and expect the same level of integration?
- If not, has Microsoft dropped the Big Brother act and stopped monitoring files for content?

What do you mean with "same level of integration"? Have you tried Windows 8 before? SkyDrive is a separate app. Once Dropbox decides to code a Windows 8 app and support the share API, you get pretty much all the integration you want.

wait...you are complaining about microsoft spying on files (first i have heard of it) and are willing to use google drive? google, a company that gets all of their revenue from advertising.

Microsoft actively scans and censors Skydrive accounts, even private folders and files. If it finds something it doesn't like, it can and will ban you. Google and Dropbox don't care what you store on their services, unless you share something illegal publicly.

Isn't that somerhing erh uhm aaaah... illegal? So completely and absolutely illegal that not even an EULA would be considered valid in a trial to justify and enforce such blatant privacy invasion?

Yes, W8 provides the file picker contract, which allows any installed app (with enough permissions) to provide file access to other applications.

All Dropbox/Google drive needs to do is to create metro apps that implement the apis, and you be able to use them just as like you can use skydrive. There are some 3rd party clients that connect to other cloud storage services already too.

The one thing that you won't be able to replace, is syncing settings, which will require a Ms account, but that doesn't really use your skydrive either...

You should read up on Joseph McCart--, sorry, Microsoft's policies on certain files on their Skydrive service. They've banned Microsoft accounts because of storing a tit pic (MSN, XBox, the whole kaboodle). I want to stick with Skydrive as I have 25GBs with them, but I'm not comfortable with a service that will shut me out of my files if I don't play within their Ward Cleaver worldview.

Hopefully this 'contracts' stuff pans out like they say it will.

Getting that old Release Preview bug with the store again. Live tile says I have an update, go to the Store, it says I have an update, click on update and there is nothing there.

Edit: On a better note, the update to the people app allows you to change the account picture for your MS account. A nice feature for me, because for some reason mine has always been some awful cropping that cut off most of my face and if there was a way to fix that prior to now I didn't know about it.

What about filtering the sources like on Windows Phone? I don't want all the Twitter "people" in there.

If you work at GameStop, Bestbuy, ToysRus or ect Microsoft will give you a free copy of Windows 8 for taking a course on Expertzone.

Do you know when the update will go live?

I swear, I'll never get used to the Charm Bar for app settings.

The bad thing about that is that some apps hide options behind a button on the lower label (when you swipe down-up, or click RMB). The worst offenders are those that use both an in-app button and the button on the Charm Bar for different settings. There's no consistency.

That's exactly my problem. I always check the app bar for settings. The charm bar is basically non-existent in my desktop use. It might be different on a tablet, since it's easier/quicker to access.
