Got another email with stock update for my Omnia 7, got real excited, only for them to say it's still not coming... :(

Also another day another game...

Got a email from buymobilephones.net, estimated to be another 10-15 days to wait for my Omnia 7.

Chicken and egg problem. Even if those capabilities exists and APIs to take advantage of that, any app which will use them will never be certified.
Basically those could be used only on future *jailbroken* devices :D

Engadget reviewed the HTC 7 Trophy.

HTC's Trophy is not the best smartphone on the market. It's not even the best Windows Phone 7 phone. To make matters worse, you'll often find the Trophy sitting side-by-side with the equivalently priced LG Optimus 7 when shopping for a new WP7 handset in Europe -- both are €49.90 on contract with Vodafone in Germany or free in the UK with monthly plans starting at £25 (our review unit is sold by Coolblue in The Netherlands for $499). And honestly, given our choice, we'd opt for the Optimus 7 given that it matches the Trophy spec-for-spec yet includes a better exclusive software suite, a beefier 1,500mAh battery, and double the internal storage at 16GB. Yet even with middling hardware and a brand new version 1.0 Microsoft OS that is clearly lacking the maturity of iOS or Android, it's simply hard to resist this sleek little lightweight gem of a handset running a very promising -- and dare we say fun -- take on the mobile OS experience. Try as we might, we can't put it down even though we have an iPhone 4 and Galaxy S at our immediate disposal. The HTC Trophy may not be our smartphone champ but it's definitely a winner.

7/10

The good:
Good all-around performer
Excellent build quality
WP7 OS handles the basics with style

The bad:
720p video not default
Average camera is poor in low light
WP7 OS still immature

Wow!

http://thenextweb.com/mobile/2010/10/29/windows-phone-7-gets-a-boost-from-89000-microsoft-employees/

There are some definitive advantages when you’re a company with as much cash on hand as Microsoft. One of those advantages is that you can afford to give away 89,000 of your brand new Windows Phone 7 handsets to your employees. Combine that with the 1,000 that were given away yesterday at the PDC and that’s a hefty chunk of change for 90,000 phones.

According to NetworkWorld, Guy Gilbert and Paul Bryan from Microsoft weren’t shy in admitting the issues that earlier versions of the Windows Mobile OS had. But as we’ve stated here before, Phone 7 appears to not only be a competitor, but also will likely be a force to be reckoned with by both Google and Apple in the mobile market.

That good to hear that middling hardware is still compelling due to the OS.

I can't wait for something that pushes the envelope.

got my new live id ready. took some time to figure things out as i already had a live id for zune and xbox but not a live email. i wanted skydrive and mesh functions so i had to create a live email, then go into my xbox and change my live id. once i did that, my zune account updated and my spacebucks transfered to my new live id. yay!!!

I'd be curious to learn if a higher class card makes the phone run better.
According to Paul Thurrott on this weeks Windows Weekly, MS only added microsd because samsung, lg, htc etc... requested it and MS won't recommend certain speeds of microsd cards because in their testing cards from even the same manufacturer rated at the same class do not perform the same causing hangs and all sorts of problems.

listen to the exact explanation on WW 180 @ 26minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqfUfjEOodU#t=26m30s

it's user error. log in through your xbox with your existing account then it will ask for the new one. i had the same issue. xbox.com and zune.net will change automatically once you do this.

Really getting impatient waiting on my Omnia 7 :( received an email yesterday telling me that they still had no stock, still had no idea when they were getting stock but that it should be soon lol <_<

See with the free dev tools can you load apps straight onto your own device without paying to put it on the market?

"Works" and works are different concepts. Yeah, it'll "work" in that the phone will boot up and things will run.

But the "class" ratings of SD cards are all-but-meaningless. As Paul Thurrott describes after meeting with Microsoft, there's practically no standardization or controls behind those class ratings. One class 2 might easily out-perform another class 2. One class 10 might be perfectly suitable while another card from the exact same manufacturer with the exact same model number and the exact same class number might perform horribly slow.

http://windowsphonesecrets.com/2010...micro-sd-and-windows-phone-storage-expansion/

That's why the feature is so hidden and discouraged - because the only reason it's there is so that device manufacturers have an easy way to sell different capacity phones without producing different internals. There's no reliable way that you'll get SD cards to run fast enough when you buy them off the shelf.

The reason why it's taken so long is because the team was genuinely testing all different cards of all different "classes" and wondering why there was so much disparity in their results.

Ugh news like that sucks cause I want the focus screen, but gosh damn 8 gigs SUCKS in this day and age.

Wait, I thought the Focus actually supported expanding the SD card??

8GB...that will not fucking do.

You have to replace the existing micro sd card and the reflash the firmware/os onto the card, and the key is trying to find the right card to actually run the OS.

It's looking like the HD7 for me..

I like my no-contract arrangement with t-mobile..

I'll be ok with 16GB for a while.. after I make sure that the phone is ok I may grab a 32GB card.. and replace the sd card.

For hardware launching in 8 days, we know shockingly little of the Venue Pro.

And here's the full text of the changes MS made on certification requirements

http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_...spx?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

of note:

Changed the maximum size from 400 to 225 MB.

Updated section with a description of the advantages and challenges of running an application under a locked screen. Separated guidance for audio and/or video applications, and all other applications. Added requirements for minimum battery life and idle behavior while the application is running under a locked screen.
Removed the requirement 6.3.1 Configurable Functionality (you no longer have to ask users to opt in to allowing the app to run under lock as long as you meet the battery life requirements above).

6.7. Photo Sharing Applications - This is a new requirement

So we might get our Flickr and Tumblr photo sharing apps.

Man, I've asked about every Ebay user if the Omnia 7 comes in 16gig or not and they are all 8gig.

Not sure I can settle with 8gig.

Looks great, I'll look forward to reviewing it when my phone finally arrives :D

Also I have an interview lined up with PopCap regarding wp7, does anybody have any questions I can put forward to them?

Number 7: Pacman CE

Basically, WTF is it?
It a re-imagining of the classic game. This time players are bound to a time limit where you have to get as many points as possible. As you get better and score more points the game speeds up.

Why do I want it?
It's the classic only better. Really addictive and competing with your friends for high scores could see me playing this game during my breaks.

How could it be shit?
It can't really be shit, but a new version is coming out so maybe a port of the new one would be cool too.

Watch the trailer and see why I want it.

BTW nerds what's the difference between the normal LCD Screen of say the HTC Surround and then the supposed LED Screen on the LG Quantum?

I did a quick search but couldn't find a thread dedicated to people pimping their iPhone/Android/WP7 apps. It would be really nice to be able to use the community to get some eyes on what might potentially be lost in the shuffle on marketplaces.

Just a thought.

Well there is an Android Software there. You CAN pim your Android stuff in there.

You go to Tech. You should know this.

I'm pretty sure both the Quantum and Surround have the run-of-the-mill LCD screen.

For phones the screen types are LCD (most cell phones), Super-LCD (new HTC Desires), IPS (iPhone), AMOLED (Nexus one), Super-AMOLED (Galaxy S).

Everything except the AMOLEDs need an external light source to light up the screen which most likely where you got the LED screen quote for the LG Quantum since it needs LED lights to light up the LCD screen.

I called my local ATT store to see if they had any demo units (because I am trying to show my gf, as she is moving to my plan and looking for phones), but they said they won't have any demo units till launch day. I thought someone in this thread said they checked out a WP7 phone at their store...?

My local AT&T store was completely clueless about WP7, it seems like none of them got a memo concerning it or anything. I'm beginning to doubt whether or not I'll be able to get one at 8am on Nov 8th...

I get this, but I was confused.

As ep85 said he thought they ran off of run of the mill LCD screens.

If you read the OP and look at the phone specs for both of the LG phones they say LED where as all the others are either LCD or some form of AMOLED. Yet I haven't seen anyone mention LED for the two LG phones in any of the articles either.

I also was wondering because I know what LED tvs are and such, but haven't ever heard of LED screens for phones. I've only heard of the standard different types LCDs and OLEDs.

I mean would this make it like an OLED screen or an LCD... fuck IDK it just confused the fuck out of me sorry. I think it's just information overload.

kazinova said:
LCD = LCD
LED = LED Backlit LCD (Usually)
AMOLED = Organic LED (No backlight)
S-AMOLED = Samsung's next gen OLED

That threw me off to as there is a big difference between an LED display and an LED backlit LCD display. It's probably 99% the later though.

Seems that normal submissions for the wp7 marketplace open up on November 3rd.

Hope I don't step on toes, but I am going shamelessly promote my game which should be out around that time.

doodle Ship

2D side scrolling game.

I don't mean to be rude, but that game looks really bad in it's current state. I've left a comment on the video, hope you find the feedback helpful and not insulting.
