From the excitement I see in this thread, Microsoft looks to have a strong Windows Phone community.

I'm curious, what draws you guys to WP7? Past experience with Windows Mobile? Are you happy Zune owner? Are you Xboxen?!

Got my HD7..

Feels great.. super solid.. particularly coming from a samsung vibrant..

very responsive..

signed into live, downloaded an app or two.. uninstalled all of the stock applications I wasn't going to use..

loaded up my gmail and facebook accounts.. and merged contacts..

I think this is going to be an excellent platform..

It is my first smartphone, so I am just trying something new.

everyone has their reasons. me, i like the way the apps are uniform. 3rd party, 1st party; all the apps will navigate and control a certain way. i also think the zune software for your desktop is far superior to itunes or anything else. you can also try any game before you buy it. what really sold me was the browser. sure it doesn't have flash support yet but if you've seen the videos the browser is clearly smoother than the browser in iphone and android.

I didn't realize phones were only out for T-Mobile & AT&T right now. VZ and Sprint models coming soon?

Ah, nevermind.

Ouch. Verizon’s already gone on the record saying they’re not even going to think about a Windows Phone 7 handset until 2011, but now their CEO is openly sneering at Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system… outright dismissing it as a contender in the current smartphone wars.

fuck the verizon CEO. give me some goddamn phone options! I sure as fuck ain't getting options on cheaper plans.

Regarding the Venue Pro, some guy asked his local TMO store owner (In the US)

I also asked him about the Dell Venue Pro. He says they are supposed to get them in store by the end of the month. He says they are getting the Dell Thunder and the Dell Venue Pro at about the same time. Not sure if it's true, but there you have it.

I got an email for order dispatch and shat brix. Turns out it was for something else I ordered. :lol false alarm boys.... :(

p.s. I hate everyone who has their phone in this thread with bitter jealous tears...

Focus SHOULD support memory expansion, btw. There is a sticker on the back of the phone that says to backup data to Zune before inserting memory card. Hope Thurrott confirms this soon.

That's because the device will need to be hard reset (erased) to recognize the sd card..

The SD card becomes part of the file system.. it is not a separate entity.

The Focus is one of the few phones that has internal memory and a microSD expansion slot..

The slot has to be hidden in the Surround right?

I want the Surround for the form factor.
But SD slot and better screen on the Focus tempt me.

Oh, I realize all of this. I just found it interesting given the SD controversy, that Samsung seems to full support/encourage the use of an expansion card, while MS is hands-off about the whole thing.

MS is only being hands off because micro sd cards are a cluster fuck and a half trying to buy the right one. This isn't something they'd want to deal with for the broader market right now when launching the new platform. They just want shit to work.

Ah. I see.

I'd bet that MS just doesn't want to be responsible if people put a slow microSD card into a device and then complain about the performance of the device.

Whereas Samsung put the slot in there and wants people to know that they're not limited to the 8GB of storage that the device comes with.

Friend got a windows phone 7 couple of days ago, he's liking it but really missing the chat features other phones have, e.g. Whatsapp, BBM, Ping.. etc..

Do you know any applications on the windows marketplace that have a chat feature supporting different handsets. The other option is a live messenger client but no offical one released and all the ones already out have low ratings. Plus no one uses a live messenger on their phone all the time.

p.s. UK here

I'm in the same boat. I'm leaning towards the Surround if only because it's in stock at Amazon, whereas the focus doesn't list a price.

But the Surround design is way better in my eyes.

I was set to get the dell but think I may just go with the focus.... the dell is too much of an unknown quantity at this point. The focus seems to have consistent reviews and we know it will be expandable (despite what people say.... its a matter of getting the right card so its stable).

There is no word on the dell battery life, camera, long term slider quality, etc. The software will be consistent but I worry about the hardware (especially since this will be a first gen device from dell)

I am going to play with the hardware (samsung) before making a decision though. There is nothing like holding the device youself to make these decisions (another thing that worries me about the dell is I would have to rely on reviews)

Amazon has the Surround for $99?!

Edit: bah! Changes to 199 when go to their Wireless store.

Edit2: $149 for new customers. No fair.

Posting from my Focus. Rendering on the browser doesn't seem as pretty as the iPhone but its not a big deal. Loving the suggestive text.

I DO wish you could add web pages to the start menu.

any venue pro sightings? so much for that rumor it'd be sold at the microsoft web store.
Next Monday for web stores (Amazon, Dell, probably MSFT store too)

$199 on contract

$449 without.

Very good. I hope the low entry price doesn't cause a huge swell of people I know rocking one, though. I was kind of hoping for a high price so I could be unique.

You can. In the menu bar for a website, you can pin the start screen.

If I understand Correctly, the Venue Pro should work with AT&T with the 850/1900 support?

Not yet, it only has AWS (1700/2100). NAM 3G should be coming later

So I haven't been following these phones at all, but saw this ad at the movie theater yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHlN21ebeak

Now, I grant you that it's a funny commercial. But isn't the message sort of self-defeating? Are they saying W7Phone will make you want to use it less? I mean, I sometimes feel that way about Windows, but is that really a selling point?

The point was that it would take less time to do tasks and find buttons. Less time with it in your hand but not exactly using it less.

Considering that you can't just walk into a T-mobile store and buy one I'd say it will still be a unique phone. Up until the android Venue is sold to all carriers. LOL

Congrats on joining the party, Ameriland. Some nice xbl games out today to celebrate. Hoping to see some sales numbers soon; my company site is seeing WP7 traffic starting to come on now. Couple a day on 50k visitors, with 5% mobile usage.

My girlfriend bought her WP7 at the weekend. Told her to get the Mozart as it probably has better battery life, but she ended up with the Omnia. Oh well!

-_- are you kidding me?! After all this wait my cousin calls me and says he picked up a HD7 for me. Do I be impatient and use that for the few weekswhile waiting for the Omnia 7 or sell it for a profit and wait for my Omnia to come... Hmm I'll guess we'll see tonight when he brings em round.

P.s. I just had my interview with the Rocket Riot guys, expect it up tonight :)

I guess that's my problem with it. Everyone looks like they are really enjoying their phones despite everything going on around them. And here comes MS to put an end to all that enjoyment. If the people in the ad looked confused or frustrated maybe, that would be different.

Interview with codeglue!

http://wp7gamers.blogspot.com/2010/11/interview-with-peter-de-jong-ceo-co.html

An Interview with Peter de Jong CEO & Co-founder of CodeGlue (Rocket Riot)
Like the lovely guys over at PopCap (read interview here) CodeGlue CEO and Co-founder the wonderful Peter de Jong gave me his time to answer a few Windows Phone 7 questions.

1) First off congratulations on the release of Rocket Riot. I was
just wondering what the development process was like for the new
platform?

The development went pretty smooth from our point of view. Rocket Riot was originally released for Xbox Live Arcade and was one of the first games developed using XNA. Windows Phone 7 also uses XNA as an underlying technology, so we could re-use a lot of the code. Most of the work had to do with optimizing the code to make this mobile version of the game as explosive as its Xbox cousin. We think we succeeded pretty well, it has become a complete mobile riot!

i always hear "the hd7 is basically a hd2 with wp7 on it". is that actually a bad thing? if i want a phone with a big ass screen, isnt this the one to go for?

So I called a Microsoft retail store and they did have the Venue Pro in stock this morning but quickly sold out of them. I think I can wait as the idea of paying $50 for taxes is a turn off.

First post from the new phone! Loving my Samsung Focus, it's probably the best US phone available. What a nice screen and I love the haptic feedback on the capacitive buttons, it makes them not being physical button almost bearable.

It kinda is a bad thing. You get the same big mediocre screen, same weak ass battery and the same old SoC for 599, while the HD2 is 499 or less.

The Venue Pro really exists!
