ugh, when is HTC going to retire its 2009 design?

My guess is not for a while. I read an interview with one of HTC's people who explained their designs, as in why they look similair. They find it cost-efficient and speeds up work time to work with a certain template. In my opinion, HTC's last beauty was the HTC HD2 (to which I'm not biased, at all *cough*)

How big is the screen on the Titan? Man, I need a new phone soon. The camera on my Focus has a tiny black speck that is ruining my pics, and picture taking is one of the main things I love to do on my phone. :(

Then why the hell would you get a phone from HTC? :lol

Yeah, you're right. Pink tint of death, lol. I need a new phone, though. Bad.

do they the eyefi program for WM7 yet? You can get a 70 dollar tiny pocket camera that takes infinitely better pictures then any phone and have it automatically send all the pics to your phone and upload them to whatever you use to store them (i use picasa). Then you are free to share it how you want

I was thinking of maybe switching to WP7 since tmobile still doesn't have the iPhone. I don't really like the look of the omega though. From what I've been seeing of the OS it looks really slick, and tightly integrated. The biggest gripe I have with Android very disjointed in a way, there's not much consistency between things.

Apart form the looks, Windows Phone 7 has great performance.

I don't think the Omega is confirmed for T-Mobile USA. It says Deutsche Telekom. We still have to see what the devices for the US are and maybe Microsoft is really going to wait for September 15 to reveal them.

... what?

Samsung didn't show their mango phone either. would be great if MS and its partners reveal the new phones and announce immediate availability of the mango update on Sept 15.

Whether iPhone will be for T-Mobile will be revealed early October.

Come on I want to hear some Sprint phones.

Maybe they or Microsoft thought it wouldn't get enough attention? Maybe Microsoft wanted to save it for the Build conference (September 13-16). We can only speculate at this point.

WPCentral added another point:

Lets add a 3rd bit of info. Back in July we speculated that the AT&T Dell Venue Pro was not going to re-ship till end of August due to it getting a Mango update (it's been "out of stock" for weeks). Now if you go to that page the preliminary ship date is...wait for it...September 15th.

lol...

I love how right above I said

This is gotta be the cluster fuck. MS is gonna hold it back until ALL of the companies are ready to go. Yet if you're say IDK HTC and got your shit already you're fucked waiting on say IDK Dell getting their shit done. You're basically hamstrung by the slowest manufacturer by design.

Wasn't there a fiasco with the Samsung Focus? Is the situation going to be the same in these newer phones? I'm curious because I remember Microsoft explicitly stating that WP7 didn't support microSD cards (unless it was integrated into the phone like with HTC phones).

The first thing I did when I got my Focus was put in more storage with microSD. The only thing is you have to format internal and card memory together. If you change the card you have to format everything again. My phone says I have 22.26GB of storage.

I'm running Mango beta. Install was easy.

I thought you had a problem updating to mango?

To RTM Mango, not to the beta version of Mango. I've been running the beta version for weeks with no issue. I'm not the only one with the issue of timing out during the RTM update with a Focus, so I'm more apt to believe it doesn't have anything to do with the memory card.

brotkasten said:
Who? Sorry, I mean, I'm sure you'll get a new shiny slider phone!

who?
Plenty of us on Sprint willing to give WP7 a chance if we had options. :P

Still waiting to see what happens before upgrading - going to end up with either Android or the HTC Arrive if there's nothing new for Sprint.

So from what I hear, both phones already leaked (the white one and the black one) and they both look like all the other billion HTC phones? And Samsung didn't announce anything. LAME

Ah, my bad then!

@joebelfiore: "I gotta feeling.. that tonight's gonna be a good dang night..." :) http://t.co/pt1yo4r (no, mango is NOT releasing tonight! Seriously!)
@WithinRafael: I love how folks report Mango /release/ dates, as if somehow all the carriers in the world will simultaneously push Go.

:D

What the hell is this? Nobody from the big blogs is there, there's no live stream, nobody does a live blog, everything just pops up at Twitter.

Here are the final specs of the Trophy.5 and the HD7.5

This event was announced weeks ago, wasn't it? It's not like HTC just snuck up on everybody. *smh*

Winrumors has a hands-on with the Radar/Omega and the FFC in Mango.
Microsoft revealed on Thursday that it plans to officially support forward facing cameras on its upcoming Windows Phone 7.5 “Mango” handsets.

After months of speculation, leaks, rumors and near confirmations, HTC unveiled two new Windows Phone 7.5 devices on Thursday that both include a forward facing camera. The support in Windows Phone 7.5 will allow third party developers to integrate forward facing camera support into their applications. Microsoft has included APIs for developers to leverage to create a variety of applications for Windows Phone 7.5. Natively and out of the box, there’s no inbuilt application that will take advantage of forward facing cameras apart from the standard Camera app.

To activate a forward facing camera, users simply have to toggle an onscreen switch in the camera application to activate the front facing or rear facing camera.

The confirmation of forward facing cameras will likely pave the way for the introduction of Skype on Windows Phone. Microsoft revealed earlier this year that Skype is coming to Windows Phone. Microsoft is also in the process of acquiring Skype, a deal that it expects to close by the end of the year. Although Microsoft are still tight lipped about their Skype plans, treat this support as confirmation of video calling support in Skype for Windows Phone.

I think it was announced last week.

HTC is such a bore but you gotta admit, their phones work as intended.

Unlike Sammy and their silly software.

Fuck it. Should I just buy a Focus for $260 (BNIB) off craigslist? It doesn't look like it's going to get much better... Or a Venue Pro for about $300 maybe?

Having to wait until October for a new phone is gonna suck. ugh. Hopefully there isn't a Nexus phone with ICS and hopefully Apple doesn't announce a 4" retina display iPhone. Both will be awfully tough to fight off with my camera speck Focus. :(

edit: No kickstand on the Titan? WTF?

yes, I'm ver impressed with my HD7's firmware and update situation but I question HTC's build quality at times. my HD7's chrome body is beginning to chip away. wtf.

Yeah when I had the HD7 I noticed that, and the finish on the kickstand too, and also you could see the SIM card through a gap between the battery door and the bottom on the phone.

Save me Samsung!!! Announce your 4.5" Super Amoled Plus device, release it in September, and take my money please!!

Nokia is December, these HTC phones are likely December or so as well (in the US). What the hell, we need some surprises or this will be a brutal holiday for MS. All their phones so far will likely release AFTER the two new iPhones from Apple. I thought we'd have like 10 new phones by October, but unless we have a bunch of surprises, it'll likely be much much less than that.

Resolution being 800x480 on such a large screen is going to suck =[

Yeah I'm cool with the 800x480 resolution for now on most of the phones unlike some, but 4.7" is fucking BIG. Not sure if the res will work out very well. Hell 4.3 is big as fuck on my GF's HTC Inspire 4g. 800x480 looks great on my Focus, but that extra .7 makes a big difference when you are talking about stuff that's smaller(ish) like phones. .7 is jack on say a TV or something, but big on a phone. Hell 4.7 is big as fuck to carry around to. Trending towards the Dell Streak where 5 inches wasn't quite a phone not quite a tablet.

As for Mango most of us small subset are probably all cool seeing as how we are running RTM Mango anyways. Still you'd think MS would want to be 1st out of the gate in the smart phone OS game this fall. Anything past Mid Sept is trending towards iOS5 territory, and anytime after that iOS5 and the next iPhone should be out with the next Nexus phone with ICS coming out soon too.

Sept 1st is no rush MS as you have a few weeks wiggle room. Don't fuck up and think you can pull a NoDo again though.

PS: How are we gonna know if real deal Mango is out for us with the dev RTM? Hope I still have my NoDo copy... I haven't formatted so I assume it still should be there...

The Verge hands-on with both devices

The Titan

phFJN.jpg

The HTC Titan is one Windows Phone smartphone that truly lives up to its name, with a massive 4.7-inch display that gives Microsoft’s mobile OS its first standout device. And while Dell’s already tried to go this big with the 5-inch Android-powered Streak, there’s never previously been a device combining the Titan’s ample Super LCD screen and minimal physical footprint. Measuring in at 130.6 x 70.6 x 9.9mm, the Titan poses a legitimate threat of actually being able to fit inside a standard-sized pocket.

...

As far as software is concerned, HTC’s latest will come preloaded with Windows Phone Mango and all the improvements that brings, along with the HTC Watch service that had heretofore only been available on a limited number of Android devices. HTC’s also built out its HTC Hub application with a few new features, although it’s nothing like the extensive skinning it’s done on Android with Sense.

The Titan will ship out to distributors at the tail end of this month and will be widely available across Europe in October. No carrier exclusives are anticipated and there’s sadly no word yet about when and where US buyers might be able to get one.

...

Although tall and wide, the slight 9.9mm thickness enables the Titan to slip easily into the front pocket of even the skinniest jeans. However, its dimensions could overwhelm hands less generously proportioned than our own: although the Windows Phone Metro UI keeps things relatively centered and easy for one-handed usage, it’s still not necessarily easy to reach the top of the screen with your thumb when holding the device in one hand, and accessing the power button required a bit of in-hand shuffling in order to climb a finger up to the button located along the top-right edge of the device. People with smaller hands will find the Titan to be a challenge.

Software-wise, the Mango build we saw loaded on the Titan was obviously not final yet, but WP7 was running fast and looked great on the massive screen. HTC’s ability to tweak the OS is limited by Microsoft, but there are still enhancements scattered throughout, including a nifty panorama mode for the camera and HTC’s slick speakerphone implementation that kicks on the speaker when you place the device face-down on a table. HTC’s also pre-loading Tango video-conferencing software to make use of that front-facing camera, although we’d imagine Microsoft has plans to integrate Skype into Windows Phone 7 rather soon as well.

The Radar

o2tUh.jpg

The second of HTC’s two new Windows Phones announced today, the mid-range HTC Radar comes equipped with a 3.8-inch Super LCD display, a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon SOC, 8GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, a 1,520mAh battery, and a 5-megapixel backside-illuminated sensor paired to an f2.2 lens for camera duties. Its external design is intentionally tailored to match that of HTC’s 7-inch Flyer tablet, with one single aluminum shell wrapped around the electronics inside. The Radar will come in white and silver variants when it launches in October, a white and a silver option, though be forewarned that neither of them will have a user-replaceable battery. The particular physical design of this phone looks to have made that a necessary sacrifice.

HTC has informed us that it’s aiming to price the Radar somewhere below the typical $199 on-contract levy, however we’ve no word yet on which carriers will be picking the phone up when. Europe’s getting it in October, presumably right alongside its bigger brother, the Titan.

...

The Radar immediately reminded us of the 3.8-inch HTC Trophy with regards to specs and styling (albeit, with a front-facing cam, beefier battery, and 1-mm thinner chassis). And like the Trophy, the Radar fits perfectly in the hand thanks to its softly contoured exterior. Unlike the Titan, the Radar’s display isn’t a standout feature — although it’s Super LCD, it’s not laminated like the Titan’s screen and there’s a mildly noticeable air gap between the glass and LCD that detracts from the overall solid quality of the panel itself. Such is the burden of the mid-range phone.

Just looking at this comparison, the Titan isn't too much bigger than the Sensation.

Yes and no. There is a bigger gap between the 4.3 Desire HD clones and the 4.7 Titan than say the Samsung Focus and the 4.3 Desire HD closes.

Yeah I just looked it up and the HTC Desire HD was 4.3" with the same resolution and everything looked blurry even on that =/

I think the Windows Phone styling/typography works well, even at larger resolutions. I'm looking at the HD videos of the Titan, specifically looking for whether the low resolution makes anything look crappy, but I can't see anything that looks bad. Maybe the browser, but I haven't see it in the videos yet.

funny we bring this up, the Engadget preview says an HTC rep had a Titan that had chipped paint in the corners. WTF HTC? fix your cameras and stop painting over aluminum.

Nokia, save us!!!

Dear thirty,

We will save you. Definitely. Promised.

Just not in 2011, sorry.

Sincerely yours,

Nokia

P.S.: Please don't buy anything from Samsung, they suck.

Before posting my HTC Titan and HTC Radar hands on impression I wanted to talk about something interesting that a Microsoft rep told during the HTC Event a few minutes ago. I specifically asked him about the Nokia Sea Ray announcement and the Nokia World event taking place in London on October 26th because I anted to know if this was the date and location of Nokia’s first Windows Phone unveiling. HE was obviously reluctant to answer this question but finally told me that Nokia Wolrd wasn’t going to be it and that there is another other specific event scheduled for the device’s launch (before or after Oct 26th?). This is obviously not an official statement so please take with a grain salt but given today’s HTC event , the launch of the Fujitsu IS12T last week I wouldn’t be surprised if Nokia does something prior to Nokia world.
