Okay so I'm semi confused.... For all of us that installed Mango a few weeks ago or however long it's been... are we getting this new mango update being pushed to all?

Or is what I have now what I have until I have to roll back to NoDo for the official release?

We're getting this update to Mango build 7712 through the zune beta 4.8 version for our Mango devices running 7661.

You just be able to connect your device, open zune 4.8 and go to settings>update

Plugged my phone in and the Zune beta prompted me to install the new update.

Well, Zune crashed when I plugged it in, then I restarted it and it prompted me.

ETA: http://secondapps.com/neogaf looks a bit better. I'm not seeing any of the rendering errors the last Mango Beta had.

Mine updated very smoothly.... I haven't seen anything but is there a changelog posted anywhere (in terms of new stuff added outside the twitter being added).

One little thing I noticed is the lime color is not quite as bright in this update as it was.

They all ultimately just play music though.

Heh, that's the crux of the matter yeah! You're right, as far as the basics of handling and playing my library is concerned Zune is probably no better or worse than iTunes, although the novelty of the nicer UI and visual options is quite striking for now.

I guess the best way to assess whether I want to use Zune going forward is to give this free Zune Pass trial a go..

Awww yeah the neogaf web no longer has black cuts so far...

Edit.
Befre I go bed id just like to say that the wp7 is awesome. for a phone it does everything I want. However it is far from perfect for me.

Gripes , some VERY minor that I want, yes selfish, have yet to be implemented and its been nearly a year...

Can't buy apps with me points is dumb. If this phone harps on about xbl then it should lete switch between gamer tags and use points with different accounts.

I am still waiting to be able to stream videos in Zune from my wmp server. Still not happened yet. I don't want an app I want this native to the OS.

If you promise me flash then takeit away promising html5 support then at least websites that work with my iPhone should work with this. And if they do work Ilit should be as easy as typing address like i do with IOS not through some hoops. So far i can't watch that i have tried tvcatchup, gametrailers, beetle and other websites...

I've got more but in tired :) don't get me wrong though I love wp7 and will be sticking with it now for the forseeable future...

Plug in to Zune, do the manual update check on the software, and you'll get prompted to update to the latest beta version.

How good is that windows phone from iphone users?
I am tired of itunes and would prefer to move away from it.
Thanks.

I went from iPhone, to Android, and then to Windows Phone. I love it. At this point, you should wait for a mango device, but it'll be a breath of fresh air once you go from an interface centered around apps to an interface centered around YOU.

for those updated to RTM Mango

It's not RTM Mango. Close, though.

edit -

New 7712 discoveries -

You can link someone's twitter account to their existing contact on your phone.. you just need to tap the @username in a tweet they made, etc. then you'll be taken to a different profile card with all of their tweets.. and from there you can choose "Link" and choose one of your existing contacts.

Once this is done, you'll get "Mention on Twitter" on their profile card.

Next, IE 9 on WP7 can now use google music.
I can't seem to do anything with the Twitter contacts. I've tried filtering to only Twitter contacts to link them, but nothing shows up.

If I filter my news feed I can click on tweets, but still cannot link contacts. Any ideas?

After you linked your twitter account, try re-syncing your windows live account..

Aside from that just wait.. I think it may take some time for them to show up.

It took a while before facebook chat was available on the device after I linked facebook to windows live for the first version of Mango we got.

Not only does Google Music work, but so does the superior Amazon Cloud player.

That is good to know. They must have fixed the user agent or something.

edit - Mango is awesome and all.. but I hear Apollo is where it's at.

WTF MS.. what's taking so long?!

....

kidding.. kidding..

for now..

So, I got a notification for my HTC Trophy to get the new firmware. Anything new in it? I got NoDo already. I am assuming it's the security certificate one?

HTC firmware update, I think.

I know the HD7 got one recently.

What are people's thoughts on Zune?

Today is my very first experience with Zune in any capacity at all. iTunes has always been suffecient for me. The service itself looks and runs very nice.. it's largely offering me the same functionality as iTunes does for basic music listening etc but wrapped in a much nicer package. Are many of you using Zune as your main media playing format or do you just use it to sync your WP7 handsets and still use iTunes/other services?

Also, how are people finding Zune pass? I have a free 3 month trial with my contract which I'm obviously going to give a go, but I'd rather not get too deep into it before I have to make a decision on whether to pay for the continuing service (and therefore risk losing all the shit I downloaded if I didn't). Is it worth trying out and paying for each month?

Been a Zune user since the bricks hit. Wild ride. Software has come a LONG way. Crazy to think for all the aesthetics Apple employs so much better than Microsoft, it's the Zune software of all things that runs circles around iTunes across more than one category. Drag and drop editing, Smart DJ, Mixview, Now Playing screensaver, all make the software a joy to explore and experience music. Concerning Zune Pass: Been a subscriber for about three years now. That's why I converted from iPhone to WP7, Zune Pass implementation is fantastic. Just the mere fact you have access to to the whole catalog everywhere you go, stream or download was enough to convert me, and with Mango, Smart DJ is in, which makes me a very happy camper.

Also in case you aren't informed, for $15 per month, Zune Pass gives you use on three computers, and up to three devices. You get 10 credits per month to use on tracks you get to KEEP (no DRM MP3s). So no matter when you decide to cancel you'd have a ton of music you discovered and kept when you're done. Fairly versatile service, great deal for the price.

so the 14 day trial Zune Pass, do you get to keep the 10 songs or whatever?

Not during the trial, if I recall correctly.

After your two weeks are up and you get billed for your first month, you'll get 10 song credits.

You can download any eligible music from the marketplace and stream it to your phone over 3G or Wifi though. You just don't get to keep any songs until you're a paying customer.

It said I wouldn't be charged. HM, I sure hope I don't have to check and make sure. I just wanted to try it out and not be automatically charged.

That is amazing! That might be worth the hassle to install the Mango Beta/RC.

When unlocking the phone, the background appears before the text. Only happened since updating today. Normal?

This was happening for me in the earlier Mango beta too. I've got a hunch that it's something to do with the hardware sleep button and/or firmware.

What phone do you have?

In the US. The UK doesn't get any for-keeps songs.

HTC Mozart.

I think it's just a bug with the fade, since it's pretty inconsistent - sometimes it fades in at the same rate, or just after, the rest of the screen, but other times it does tend to lag a bit.

EDIT: The multitasking is much better now: you can actually scroll across multiple apps now. The only hitch I have with it is that the image has to be in the direct centre of the screen before you can select it.

My biggest skydrive issue is the fact that all of my music is in my shared folder that I share with my GF. It's sort out our music folder together and shit (yes I know cheesy). Problem is your shared folder doesn't ever show up at least in office when I was looking through my skydrive folders.

PS: Thanks for the info. I ran the update last night, and boom I'm good. Wish we had a set of patch notes though!!!

The SkyDrive music thing is really nothing exciting. I just noticed that my music folder showed up in the skydrive, but it just opens the browser and let you select the files and stream them. There's no interface or anything.

Here's a list of changes in the 7712 build:

Major changes include:

  • Twitter integration into the What’s New feed, along with notifications for Twitter mentions through the “Me” tile
  • New animations for opening the People/Zune/Pictures/Zune/Marketplace hubs (looks a bit cooler, but is possibly slower)
  • Visual Voicemail interface has been tweaked so it’s easier to use (Pic via Pocketnow)
  • Sharing pictures via Twitter/Sharing web browser links via Twitter
  • The multitasking interface lets you quickly scroll through your last 5 apps instead of flicking through them one by one. It also doesn’t waste a slot with your homescreen, unless you were on your homescreen when you held the back button

Minor changes include:
  • LinkedIn support
  • The Paste icon doesn’t constantly show halfway on the keyboard suggestion bar when there’s nothing to paste, like it used to in the original Mango Beta 2. Now it completely hides unless you recently copied something. Much less annoying!
  • Copy/Paste sound effect has been added instead of the default keyboard “click” noise. Now it sounds like a digitized water droplet
  • New square Windows booting logo
  • The Groups in your People Hub no longer have a tile next to them
  • Instead of the typical Play looking button at the bottom of the Music+Videos hub, they changed the icon to two music note symbols. It still plays and shuffles all of your songs like before.
  • The Lime color theme is a slightly different color now, which outraged a few people :P
  • The “Me” button in the Maps app also has a different icon
  • Suggesting changes to Bing Map results now seems to work. If a store’s info is incorrect, you can tell Bing that the store is closed/correct their phone number/correct their name/etc
  • The apps in the Music+Videos hub marquee are now alphabetized
  • When typing text and starting a new paragraph, the phone will now auto-capatilize the first letter of the paragraph. Previously in the Mango Beta 2, if you hit enter twice, it wouldn’t capitalize it for you

I think Amazon cloud player is superior to that as well. You have their awesome mp3 store, and when you buy from there you don't have to upload it to the cloud player, it just goes there automatically. The Android app is pretty awesome too, and you can stream it from the web site (at least on the Mango beta). I'll consider switching if MS releases an App for the skydrive music, but I don't think music is their focus, so I doubt it.

Can someone build an app that makes this experience better? That'd be amazing.

Microsoft only needs to implement an HTML5 audio player into SkyDrive. You'd even be able to play the music in the background.

You won't be charged. Once the trial ends, you need to choose a billing option. You can't even cancel the trial because it cancels itself after the 14 days.

The latest Nielsen's shows WP7 at just 8% of the US market. What's more interesting is that HTC is the top selling manufacturer, selling three times as many phones as Samsung. I actually expected HTC to be further ahead of Samsung, considering they're the only ones selling WP7 on Verizon, T-Mobile (DVP isn't sold at stores, is it?) and Sprint, and have two phones on AT&T.

I hope the other OEMs step it up with Mango. Samsung can't just release one phone on one carrier in the US and call it a day. Ditto for LG.

I didn't think to check but has anybody tried the podcast integration yet? I forgot to sync my phone this morning and was curious if they are now properly syncing between the zune software and phone.

My other disappointment with mango (turn by turn) does not seem to be fixed.... still requires the lame tap.

Is it 8% for Microsoft overall or specifically for Windows Phone? If it's just WP then that would be a pretty good number all told, right? Not on an absolute basis of course but relative to previous figures.

What's considered to be the top of the line handset right now? And are there new ones expected with the update coming out soon? I'm thinking of switching to WP7 and want to get a good handset that will last a while.

wait for the new mango devices.... we are about to see a ton of new devices hit now that mango is RTM.

right now the best devices look to be nokia's sea ray phone (if it comes out in your country) and the new samsung device. however neither have an official release date or which carriers/countries it will be released in.

I'm fairly sure it all of Microsoft. No way in hell WP7 went from 3% to 8% lol. It also explains why HTC is beating everyone so much, the HTC WM6.5 phones are by far the most popular ones out there.
