Totally off topic, but it made me laugh.

@maryjofoley: Q: Glad you didn't buy Yahoo for $44 billion? Ballmer: Sometimes you're lucky #w2s

I wondered if that was going to happen. (The backlash that is) That article was prettttttttty slanted. And folks were drilling them in the comments from the absolute start. Somehow they have the worst N8 shots I have seen anywhere on the entirety of the internet. I really like engadget, but cmon now...
Some people (and not only the fanboys) were suspicious after the N8 review. I don't trust them anymore after the old crew left. This is my next/The Verge is where it is for me now.

Speaking of camera settings and quality, took this near Haleakala in Hawaii for an anniversary trip with my Focus. Spontaneous shot, but loved how it turned out.

I like it! Here's my Samsung Focus contribution:

Guava in the Virgin Islands. I love the natural colors, and the detail (on the full res version) is wonderful.

edit: In terms of that Engadget article, maybe the N8 takes better pictures, but you have to coax it a bit or play around with the settings and stuff. I'm not an Apple fanboy, but the iPhone 4 took consistently better pictures than a lot of other phones I've used. You could get other phones to take awesome pics, but you'd need to set up the environment or the settings just right, while the iPhone kinda just auto adjusted to more situations without fiddling. Judging by that ridiculous rig Engadget set up, I'm sure they didn't take the time to make sure they were optimizing the setup on any of the phones, just pointing and shooting.

Looks like Android Ice Cream Sandwich will have a People app with Google+ integration. Will be interesting to see how it compares to the social network integration in Windows Phone.

It won't. For most people, the folks they care about are on FB. I like the cleaner interface and better pics on G+, but it just isn't anywhere near FB in terms of activity level and diversity of users.

Yeah, but you gotta think that if the integration is good, it might actually give Google+ quite the boost as well.

not really. G+ just isn't Facebook. google is pushing G+ too hard and too fast. plus for no reason at all, its still invite only (the last time i checked anyways).

It's gone public now. I won't care about it until I can add all three

If it gets popular enough, I don't see why MS wouldn't integrate it into Apollo.
If they'd listen to developers, they'd do it like Google in ICS.
"any social network, any social platform can tap in"

But Microsoft probably sees this as a potential stability issue that could compromise the user experiences.

Complex Shadow said:
google would rather see G+ die than link it with facebook or twitter. HTC will probably have all three in one screen though.
The presenter just said any social platform can hook into their people app and I'm seeing a twitter icon there. I don't know how deep the integration goes, but it's encouraging. I'm not a fan of Microsoft restrictions on the Hubs in WP7.

Yeah, Microsoft's #1 (or 2) priority needs to be opening up those hubs to developers.

On that note, I'm kinda feeling like Apple and Google have handed Microsoft a year to catch up.

One week until Nokia World...

Ballmer discussed Windows Phone briefly during his talk at the Web 2.0 Summit on Wednesday and touched on Nokia. He explained he was looking forward to Nokia showing off a “bunch of new devices next week,” indicating that the Finnish handset maker may have multiple devices to show. Ballmer revealed Nokia “will have a chance at their Nokia World show next week to show a bunch of new devices running Windows Phone,” before adding “it should be pretty good.”

They can't ALL be N9 clones :)

the iphone 4S has put a bullet in windows phone. and the new update for droid isn't helping either. if anything microsoft is playing with fire. this long ass wait just to see the new phones is taking forever.

iOS5 and ICS haven't really done as much as they could have. Microsoft took 10 steps forward with Mango, iOS and Android have taken like 2.

I'm talking in terms of OS capabilities.

Just dictated and sent my first text via Siri, feels a bit like magic!

This was a recent tweet from Whitta. Makes me throw up in my mouth a little. I have been doing this in Mango for weeks now (and others who have had the beta for months). Whitta though is a Apple fanboy, so it is not too surprising.

its not about how many steps you take. its how big your "foot" is.

Great news about "multiple Nokia phones with wp7" at Nokia World! I figure that's got to mean 3+ new devices. "Multiple" wouldn't be two.
no i am guessing it would mean 3. i am pretty sure its just 3 new devices.

do yourself a favor. don't go in the siri thread. seriously. just don't.

.

A lot of people expect Microsoft to never catch up because Google and Apple will progress at the same rate. I'm just pointing out that that doesn't appear to be the case.

I honestly don't expect that what we saw from ICS will be converting any new Android users. It will attract current Android owners and people that were already planning on getting Android phones.

I wish one of my friends/fam had a WinP7 so I could give it an extended test drive.

iOS guy here through and through but this phone's UI appeals to me far more than any janky android set.

Yup.

I am so far happy with iOS, but after seeing ICS tonight I'm even more impressed with what MS pulled off than I was before.

Worse yet, I've got a decent amount of time with Android phones thanks to my job, but still so few of our clients have WP7 so I also haven't had much time to play around with it. My boss luckily bought one a week or so ago so I'm hoping he'll let me try it out more.

It's a shame if more people don't get to experience the WP7 UI.

oh please. You go seek out someone's tweet about his new purchase and then get mad at it. Don't act like each phone doesn't have different additions (and subtractions) to it's own unique feature list; From what I can tell Siri can do some things other voice control has already done, and some things they haven't.

oh i agree. it still find it amazing that mango came in six months and the whole OS was built in year. your right Microsoft can and will (imo) will catch up soon. but people are stubborn and don't like change. i swear apple couldve just crapped in a bag and called it the ibag and people would still defend it and buy it in drones.

I actually follow him and didn't seek out anything, so it is my own fault. And I'm fully aware of each platforms strengths. I just find the use of "magic" with reference to apple grating. I'm not mad.

ICS really makes mango look that much more impressive... there really is not a whole lot really new things to call that a .0 release.

The hardware looks great but knowing its from samsung hampers that... nokia has a chance to do big things in a week with their announcements but we will see. I don't expect them to compete in the spec war but they don't need to.... what they need to do is produce high quality hardware (no more of this cheap plastic look anymore) with great cameras.

ok what is ICS did i miss something today. i was in a hospital all day.

ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich / Android 4.0. They just announced it and the Galaxy Nexus about an hour or two ago.

Does anyone know if you can stop Zune from automatically transferring photos and videos to a computer?
I believe you go to settings when you are on the device screen in zune. Then you can change the sync options for pictures, videos, music, etc.

What are some fun things I can do with my Mango phone?
TellMe is incredible by the way.

The rumours about Apollo being 720p and multicore compatible have put me back on the fence about buying a 7.5 Nokia phone this year, if that's true then it seems like Apollo will be the real iOS4 moment for Windows Phone...though I probably said the same thing about multi-tasking in Mango last year.

Apollo is exactly a year away.

It's not like phones are getting any smaller. I'm more concerned about the scaling of apps.
There's no middle ground, though. A 4-4.5" screen with a resolution of 800x480 is still less than ideal as far as PPI is concerned. 1024x576 would be a more suitable resolution since it covers a broader range of screen sizes - the PPI would be fine for screens anywhere between 3.7-5". Even on a 5" screen the density would be the same as a current gen 4" device with an 800x480 display.

Anything but 720p won't be marketable next year. The resolution seems always one of the cons in Windows Phone reviews. "No qHD screen", "still WVGA", "why is the res still so slow?" blah blah blah.

This should all have been abstracted away by now. Deliver resolution independent UI and 'retina displays' at every screen size so we (developers and consumers) don't have to bother with all these calculations..

Oh no, Van was banned. Damn, that's not nice.

Woah? He never seemed that confrontational so I'm surprised he got banned. That sucks. :(

My phone resolution isn't something I really SEE daily on my focus. Things look fine, and so I'm cool with it. That being said when I'm ready to upgrade aka this time next year you'd be crazy to go for wvga then. I'm more worried that Apollo is going to be last out the gate again, and we are going to have a full year of high res Android phones. Plus the iPhone will probably get another screen bump, and that could end up out before Apollo as well.

MS is like sooo close to being there where they need to be, but they seem to be just that half a step behind. MS as well as the carriers all need that little extra nudge to push them forward.

Yeah, Windows Phone needs to at least match bullet points regardless of whether it matters or not.

Thurott is a shill. iOS 5 runs just as well as iOS 4 ran on the 3GS.
He's running the supersite for Windows. What do you expect? And lets not forget that he teared MS a new one between the RTM and Mango release. He's no Gruber.

Can't speak for the 3GS but upgrading to iOS4 on my 3G was the end of iOS for me. It ran like molasses. Glad I switched though, I much prefer the W7P OS.

Yeah, I feel the same with my Omnia. I'd certainly love to see what a 720p screen looks like on a phone-sized device though! Will be interesting to see if it's actually useful or just a bullet point.
