So on the eve of the 950 launch (in the UK) and, officially, WP10, here is a trip back down memory lane (I left out the long Belfiore demonstation videos of new oses):

Phone renewal time...finally thinking of giving up on Windows Phone. Tempted by the Galaxy S6 edge.

Just can't get enthused for the 950. Or the XL. :(

As someone who gave up Windows Phone for a galaxy edge last year I have nothing but regret. Windows Phone just has such a beautiful interface in comparison and most of the extra apps haven't been much use to me.

And I'm not happy with the performance of most games or emulators so that's not much either.

Personally, the longer I'm away from WP the more I dislike the UI. Starting to find tiles to be a whole lot of clutter. Promotional material always makes the UI look ten times worse because they pack the screen with so many tiles it becomes a visual mess.

Does Microsoft have any type of curating of the store at all? Do a search for Lara Croft Go, you'll get the official Square Enix published game, something called "Lara croft go (new)", and something called Lara Croft Go 2.
How is this allowed, geez...
Not to mention the plethora of emulators with Mario games, but for this, they've got the official app from the publisher (for once), and they don't see that they have all to gain by removing misleading apps?

Still contemplating the Nexus 6P over the 950 XL. Think I'll give it to January to see if either come down in price at all, or if MS at least pushes out another update/firmware to fix more of the apparent bugs still to be dealt with in Windows 10.

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
Surface Phone sounds interesting. But they need Samsung HTC etc. OEM support for wider audience. The entire situation is so fucked :( really want this OS to succeed.

Some observations on the 950 XL after using it for a week now.

- Email images issue was resolved by doing a phone reset. I recovered my 950 XL backup so I didn't lose much.
- Screen is nice, and sensitivity is good but I might miss the high sensitivity mode a bit now that winter is here.
- Phone is obviously quite big, but not too big I don't think. Even with medium hands I can use it quite well, but I need to use two hands more often that I did before.
- Display Dock was delivered today, but I haven't tried it yet. Continuum through the Xbox One worked well enough though from what I tried (full Edge browser while using phone as a trackpad).
- WiFi geofencing actually does seem to work, despite the option not being present in the WiFi options like it was on my 1020. The last two days I've gone out and disabled WiFi and it turned back on automatically after I got home. Not sure how it is done now, using Cortana I guess?
- Camera seems pretty good coming from a 1020. It is obviously much faster, but I'm not up to speed on W10 camera settings so I'll need to play with it more. I've taken some really good shots and some outside (early-evening) action shots that weren't as good. Hoping to see some of the old Lumia camera options come back (action shot and panorama).
- Battery life is pretty good, but not great so far. I had heard stories of the 1520 having really good battery life so I hoping for close to that, but thus far it isn't quite that good; it is better than my 1020 was though. Yesterday I used the phone from 6:30 AM moderately throughout the day, including Bluetooth streaming in my car for 2 hours and a few phone calls for about an hour total and I had 25% battery when I went to bed at midnight.
- Call quality and speaker seem quite good compared to the 1020. On the 1020 I often needed to have the call volume at 8-10 in order to hear whereas on the 950 XL I can leave it at 4-6 and hear fine (better than the 1020 at max).
- Soft buttons have been a non-issue thus far. Typically they are there when I need them and rarely need to swipe them up.
- Being able to answer texts in-line on W10M is cool, but obviously isn't exclusive to the new phones.
- Windows Hello "works" I guess, but the phone has to be too close to your face for it to be practical right now. I tried using it exclusively for a day and while it always got my face right, I needed to hold it awkwardly close. Was getting strange looks in the returns line at Costco and my son was wondering what I was doing. :)
- Hey Cortana works pretty well, maybe too well as I've had it activate a few times by accident when coughing. It worked well in the car though so I'll probably keep it on for that.
- Gadgets app is the replacement for Nokia Device Hub I guess. It has worked ok, but when I try to updated notification apps for the DT-903 wireless charger it crashes.
- Charging with the wall charger is pretty quick, but I've done most of my charging with my Qi plates. On my older charger (with Fatboy "pillow"), I did have an issue one morning where I don't think it was aligned well as the phone was really hot and didn't charge all the way up overnight. It hasn't happened since though so I think maybe it wasn't close enough to the "sweet spot" of the charger.

Does anyone know if "favorite" photos get backed up or roamed in any way from 8.1? So if I favorite a photo in 8.1, does that marking show up anywhere else?

how can I quickly remove photos from the gallery on W10? I cant select many photos at once (have to choose one by one), cant delete the entire folder... and even when I select a lot of photos and try to delete it wants to delete them from OneDrive as well, cmon i just want more free space.

None of mine transferred over :(

Mine were a lot of Saved pics, though. 8.1 handled those better, I have to say.

With 10, when someone texts me a pic that I want to save, I have to save the photo from the text, then go to my Photos app, go to the Saved folder, give it a sec to populate, and then I can mark it as a fav.
With 8.1, almost all of that was done automatically/invisibly. When I received a text with a pic, I could favorite right away. What 8.1 would do covertly is save the photo to your Saved album the moment you favorite it, so that the local copy is automatically saved and favorited.

So I found the offline play options for Groove Music. Now I really want a 950 or an XL. Hope the the new build is worthy and good enough to make me pull the trigger.

Is there a setting somewhere to hide the contents of SMS messages in notifications? I thought I saw it before, but I can't find it anymore. (WP8)

I'm not sure if this works the way you are looking for, but try:
Settings->System->Notifications & actions->Messaging->Keep notifications private on the lock screen

Is that new to Win 10? I literally had a friend return a Windows Phone probably 18 months ago because there was no way to mask content on notifications for incoming messages.

Those were the days. When there was a glimmer of hope. Now with 0 advertising or enthusiasm outside bubbles like these, it's troubling to think of the future. But yes, it's become the platform for masochists now.

Anyone the UK heard anything back from MS yet over pre orders? The shipping date was by today. I really want to get away from my dying 920 lol

Edit: Wey hey. On it's way

According to a retailer I visited today, there are problems with the shipments, they should've arrived a few weeks ago, but apparently they received just part of the shipments only yesterday. They only had the 950 and XL in white, and no accessories at all yet.

This is for Sweden. Could be a general problem for Europe maybe.

The power button placement really mind boggling. Many missed button presses especially with a case on the 950 XL. Tap wake sorely needed. At least the to power off works well.
