Some observations on the 950 XL after using it for a week now.
- Email images issue was resolved by doing a phone reset. I recovered my 950 XL backup so I didn't lose much.
- Screen is nice, and sensitivity is good but I might miss the high sensitivity mode a bit now that winter is here.
- Phone is obviously quite big, but not too big I don't think. Even with medium hands I can use it quite well, but I need to use two hands more often that I did before.
- Display Dock was delivered today, but I haven't tried it yet. Continuum through the Xbox One worked well enough though from what I tried (full Edge browser while using phone as a trackpad).
- WiFi geofencing actually does seem to work, despite the option not being present in the WiFi options like it was on my 1020. The last two days I've gone out and disabled WiFi and it turned back on automatically after I got home. Not sure how it is done now, using Cortana I guess?
- Camera seems pretty good coming from a 1020. It is obviously much faster, but I'm not up to speed on W10 camera settings so I'll need to play with it more. I've taken some really good shots and some outside (early-evening) action shots that weren't as good. Hoping to see some of the old Lumia camera options come back (action shot and panorama).
- Battery life is pretty good, but not great so far. I had heard stories of the 1520 having really good battery life so I hoping for close to that, but thus far it isn't quite that good; it is better than my 1020 was though. Yesterday I used the phone from 6:30 AM moderately throughout the day, including Bluetooth streaming in my car for 2 hours and a few phone calls for about an hour total and I had 25% battery when I went to bed at midnight.
- Call quality and speaker seem quite good compared to the 1020. On the 1020 I often needed to have the call volume at 8-10 in order to hear whereas on the 950 XL I can leave it at 4-6 and hear fine (better than the 1020 at max).
- Soft buttons have been a non-issue thus far. Typically they are there when I need them and rarely need to swipe them up.
- Being able to answer texts in-line on W10M is cool, but obviously isn't exclusive to the new phones.
- Windows Hello "works" I guess, but the phone has to be too close to your face for it to be practical right now. I tried using it exclusively for a day and while it always got my face right, I needed to hold it awkwardly close. Was getting strange looks in the returns line at Costco and my son was wondering what I was doing.
- Hey Cortana works pretty well, maybe too well as I've had it activate a few times by accident when coughing. It worked well in the car though so I'll probably keep it on for that.
- Gadgets app is the replacement for Nokia Device Hub I guess. It has worked ok, but when I try to updated notification apps for the DT-903 wireless charger it crashes.
- Charging with the wall charger is pretty quick, but I've done most of my charging with my Qi plates. On my older charger (with Fatboy "pillow"), I did have an issue one morning where I don't think it was aligned well as the phone was really hot and didn't charge all the way up overnight. It hasn't happened since though so I think maybe it wasn't close enough to the "sweet spot" of the charger.
