Windows Phone 8.1 |OT| Update 1

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
So the wife's 950 has having all sorts of troubles since I bust a gut getting it for her.. The battery lasts a few hours, none of the apps are updating (80 pending) and an update that's stuck on 0%. The apps that are baked in just don't work (camera, photos) Tried a hard reset and still the same.

The interface isn't enough now to keep me on these phones. It's just shit that they can release such half finished OS's and think it's ok.

Just rubbish!
Return it, the problem is the update. The phone lacks stability prior to the update, I think many if not all of those issues are addressed by the update, and there was an issue where some phones couldn't get it, but that's been resolved, so if your phone still doesn't get it, return it.

I might have missed something but on these two years using Windows phones I haven't found way to properly put cursor while I'm writing in the middle of the word. And I hate that you don't have arrows to move cursor.

Oh, and Outlook works like shait through browser. Editing text is useless task and resending takes away editing completely. Mind-boggling.

Press and hold to get the cursor where you can select within a word. And why aren't you using the built in outlook app?

I had the same exact issue for a few days, I had to completely restore my phone to get it working again. Now it's working fine: Battery lasts a LONG time, apps are updating, etc.

Try restoring the phone before returning it.

Is anybody else on the fast ring having trouble with downloading speech languages and new keyboards? Or know how to fix it? I've reset the phone multiple times, even back to 8.1.

Got my first hands on with the 950 today and I have to admit, it really does look a lot better in the flesh just as many people here had said. Even thought the camera ring wasn't too bad at all.

Felt pretty good in the hand.

Promo material doesn't really sell it, albeit I still think it could have been better.

I had to hard reset a 950 that was doing that.

Does it have a microSD inserted? Seems that updates can bug if you have a MicroSD for the first time it updates.

There were some fixes recently rolled out for the "update stuck at 0%" problem. It's exacerbated substantially when you also have app updates available. They just end up conflicting with each other for resources. It in turn causes your free space to dwindle down to zero, and also causes excessive battery drain. Not a good situation.

Most of it should be able to resolve itself with time if you plug the device into power and manually trigger those updates if possible.

Funny story or maybe not: more than one person has told me about their experiences testing/working on different browsers on websites. They had to sign an agreement saying that they would have to look at nsfw stuff on a regular basis. A tester I knew said essentially it was his job to ensure the porn sites were working correctly. Now, perhaps complete hyperbole, but it made me chuckle a bit at these folks perusing through different porn and getting paid for it.

I've heard that there was one dude on the Xbox 360 HD-DVD team whose job it was to make sure porn HD-DVDs worked properly. Especially since it was all software based, the device was prone to problems.

What this also meant was that the discs needed to be watched multiple times from beginning to end, since some problems wouldn't manifest until after a while.

Yes. Try pausing all the app updates and just doing 2 or 3 at a time and they will finally start working. Totally needs fixing btw, but there is a workaround like I just posted ;)

People have been working weekends and basically 24/7 to resolve these issues - and people at Microsoft normally don't work weekends.

It definitely has seemed that way, and I am sorry. Have had lots of issues on desktop as well, though they are not catastrophic like some on mobile are.

I do not blame the developers, I blame the whole timeline imposed on you all, much as we want things yesterday (or yesteryear!), it just isn't possible always.

I'm not personally working on it, or making excuses or looking for a pass or an apology. Just acknowledging that the issues are absolutely real and not imagined, but that people are working on them and not pretending that they don't exist.

Though I did think you worked on it, I just was making you aware, it DOES seem like Microsoft is taking it seriously behind the scenes. Just seeing how much the builds numbers are jumping up so quickly in between all these recent fast releases is proof of that.

On other hand I don't think it was fair of Microsoft to do this to their developers. Why ship the 950's like this? Not like the world was waiting eagerly for these phones, just a small number were. If not for the 950's this would all be in "preview" and the bugs would be much less of an issue.

There's really no "Microsoft" borg that's "forcing" anyone to do this. There were just some core problems that were unfortunately missed. Not anyone's fault in particular, but a shared responsibility between devs and managers, and both devs and managers are doing everything they can to resolve the problems as quickly as possible.

Whenever there's weekend work like this required, everyone's always super appreciative of whoever does need to do the extra work - meals covered, extra vacation offered, etc. It's pretty nice actually whenever I've had to do it in the past. Honestly the working conditions and respect for work/life balance is one of the main reasons I've not considered working anywhere else. And that includes rare situations like this.

Any good guides out there for migrating from Windows Phone to Android? Lack of hardware options, app gap and a good deal at Costco for the LG G4 means I'm switching my parents from their HTC 8X and Blu WinHD.

There still issues with updating phones? Visiting my parents this week and my mom bought a 950 recently but it refuses to update past the .0 build that they shipped with.

No. You're SOL pretty much. You'll have to do it manually.

It was painful setting up my Priv. It didn't like how my contacts were set up, and Gmail is shit for contacts.

If you got Xperias instead, Sony makes an app that works on WP to transfer everything.

Blimey.. Whatever has happened behind the scenes this weekend it has seemingly helped the wife's 950. She switched it on for the first time in 12 hours a short time ago, went to update and lo and behold it Was there and ready to install. It installed quickly and now all the apps are coming too.

We progress with cautious optimism that the photo and battery, photo and storage issues are also fixed.

Funny, tomorrow morning we'd planned to return both our phones (950 and 950xl) and swap them for an S6 edge and a Z5 Premium.

I haven't had too much of a problem with this in 8.1 and in 10 there is a cursor control to do just what you want.

One full day on my android BLU phone and I'm already missing glance screen, live tiles, and tubecast. But damn, so many other apps are superior on android it's embarrassing.

Don't know if I'm late to the party but got an update to 10586.36 on w10 mobile tonight on fast ring

Edit... Also anyone know why I don't have Insider Hub on my preview phone? Anyway to force it? Can't read about updates anymore since blog is discontinued

You know what they say about apps. iOS first. Android later. Windows Phone never.
That coveted second spot would be nice. Even with the recent influx of apps, are these bridges ever going to gain any traction to make a difference in quality of apps?

Best you can get is fake glance on the Priv with the flip cover.

.36 was last week. I got it from the slow ring last week lol.

This BLU phone does have fake glance with the included flip case but I can't seem to get it to activate without the flip case as I prefer the phone without it.
Doesn't work without the case. It depends on it to activate.

Ironically, I'm gifting a BLU Win HD LTE tomorrow.

Sooo I could get the 950 for 350€ with a new contract, which I need anyway. Also I get porting and first month free... seems like a good deal, no? Maybe I jump in regardless.

2 years, 23€ (unlimited, 4GB with remaining data to next month up to 8GB)
Phone would be cheaper with a higher tier contract (279€ with 29€/month).

Thats crazy, consider restoring. I am using latest preview build on my 1520 and experience isnt half as bad as you describing.

I'm going through it now and can say switching platforms is never fun.

With android I found the best way to switch contacts was to export and import the cxl(?) file from outlook to gmail via my desktop browser.

Anyone can help?

Reinstalled w10m and now my pinned email tiles do not show a live tile and even though I can select them in settings to show on lock screen they no longer show notifications on lock screen. Only the main Outlook mail app shows all mail items on one live tile and one lock notifications (Outlook mail) not the pinned mailboxes.

www.theverge.com/2015/12/20/10631330/iphone-camera-team-800-people

Apple has 800 employees working on camera tech alone.

That's probably more than the entire WP team.

And now there are at least three hardware manufacturers that make better cameras, even in the apple fanboy metric of "just point and shoot". Like others have said, they hold themselves back with form factor, in both camera and battery. They do not have the best smartphone camera folks.

Ok, so both apples and Google autocorrect are way overbearing. I think androids more worse than is in this case.

Why don't they learn from MS and WP?

Wasn't there some thread recently where some Apple fanboys were convinced that like fewer than 100 people (total) worked on iOS?

"Secretly."

Got me there.

Ooooooooooonly thing that WP10 is missing for me right now is Cortana playlist support.
But, it seems to remember my choice of shuffling my music in Groove now, and it'll open Music upon plugging in my casette adapter, so I'm not too bad off I guess. Much nicer than it was just a month ago at any rate.

Visual voicemail isn't available for all mobile operators, uses your cellular data plan, and might be named something else on your phone. If it's offered by your mobile operator, it must be enabled on your mobile phone plan, and your mobile operator might charge extra for it.

Visual voicemail is not available on dual SIM phones that are running Windows 10 Mobile.
