I don't mind the current method but I surely hope the multi-task screen was improved and we can cancel apps without having to re-enter them. was adding an "X" too much to ask? yeah, I just use the back button to revive my apps.

Adding an X would be the copout solution. Do Android users still go and clear their apps every now and then?

Any chance they'll take another look at it and go a different way? This current method isn't very good.
This is subjective, although many do agree with it. I think it is just a different way to think about it rather than saying it is just wrong/not good/etc.

I have got used to using the tiles a long time ago so it doesn't really bother me much at all, and seeing as most apps I use open very quickly it really doesn't add much if I do reload it anyways.

I would agree though that it would be nice to have an option to load the tombstoned instance if you opened from the home screen, but force a relaunch if it comes from the App screen. But if you still can only have 5-7 tombstoned apps at a time, I'm not sure how much difference that would really make.

Oh don't get me wrong I'm ok with them trying something different if it helps make the experience better but it doesn't seem to in this case. If they fix this in WP8 I'd be content with the other features that appear to be missing.

Tell me about it. Apparently in Canada it is only coming to Rogers. They suck so much.
Where'd you hear this? I'm on Rogers so this does actually help although I really hope I can grab an unlocked one straight from Nokia... Hell, I'd be up for making a run down to Seattle to the Microsoft Store for one...

I think Bell confirmed they are not getting the 920 and there is also a weak rumor that Telus weill also not be getting the 920. The 8X will be coming to both Rogers and Bell. I really hope they don't fuck up the colour options for the 920 and 8X. I don't want a black phone again.

Edit: I hope we get more solid information soon.

I can tell you that the team that designed the experience for WP7 and 7.5 intentionally designed it that way. It led to a bunch of very fun, frustrating, and baffling arguments on internal mailing lists.

The discussions were also productive.

I'm still not 100% sure where I stand on the issue. I can see why they designed it this way, but with just five cards in the multitasking screen there are certainly times, where it's not ideal. One of the big issues is that it takes too long to start apps from the start screen. Users like my mother who don't use the multitasking, but open WhatsApp all the time have to wait too long. I hope that's faster in WP8 with the new hardware.

Maybe one possible approach would be to do it like Office 2013 and at the launch of an app display a notification that, when tapping it, gets you to your last position instead of completely restarting the app.

I've definitely heard the request for Cyan and someone here just asked for "Xbox Green" (seriously??) You should expect to see us introduce different colors as we move forward, but we're really excited about the "pure" colors that you are seeing ... red and yellow rock.

Heh.

The problem with multitasking directly from the start screen is the behaviour of the back button. Currently, the back button works between apps, so if an app launches another, pressing back will take you back to the original app rather than actually moving back inside the second app. For example, launching IE from the start screen and pressing back will send you back to the start screen instead of going back a page. It's the same with the Music + Videos app - if you launch it from another app (via the volume controls) there's no way to get to the main screen because you exit out of the app if you press back. If you want to keep it consistent, it'll be the same way if you allow multitasking into apps via the start screen, and completely useless as a result.

With the multitasking menu this sort of behaviour isn't really needed anymore, so it's surprising that it still works this way in 7.5 and 8. I'm guessing the reason is ease of use (ie, it's too difficult to use the multitasking menu).

the only real problem i have with the wp multitasking is that when i get a toast notification of an app i had previously opened and tap it it starts the app again even if it is in the multitasking menu. The solution to all this is make the apps start faster. I hope now with the much faster hardware they can do it.

I hope so and I agree, this carrier exclusive stuff has to stop and Nokia should be trying as hard as they can to have it on as many carriers as possible. It looks like the HTC 8X is going to be on a lot more then the Lumia.

I thought this was a US carrier thing where they won't promote/touch handsets unless it's somehow exclusive to them... (See all the versions of the old androids from Sammy different names same hardware)

Heads up guys, Engadget's 30 min Q&A with Elop is starting in about 10 minutes over at Engadget

Edit: wow @ what all these idiots are asking him..

Missed opportunity. It's not like he'd announce a tablet in an engadget Q&A...

Should have asked his opinion on the new HTC phones and whether they are good or bad for the ecosystem and Nokia.
And why the Lumia 820 doesn't have Gorilla Glass and what it uses instead.

Contrary to popular belief, I'm not Stephen Elop, but I can tell you that the 820 doesn't use GG, because it's supposed to be cheap and that's why it uses hardened plastic instead.

Gorilla Glass isn't that much better anyway. Both of my GG phones have scratches and I didn't throw them around or anything.

Well, looks like Verizon is getting all three of the "big" WP8's. Now to decide which one is really best to replace my HTC Incredible. Oddly, if these do release for Verizon in November, that's just two weeks after my eligible upgrade date. Hooray.

I do know that they're still much better than plastic when it comes to scratch resistance. Ever since everyone in the home switched to phones with GG, there's not even a single visible scratch on the screens. Without screen protectors. The only problem with them: we have to be careful about dropping them.

I can drop mine phones all I want, but as soon as I accidentally put the phone in the same pocket where I put my keys in, I get scratches.

I know it's supposed to be cheap, but I suspect it'll still cost more than the HTC 8S, which does have Gorilla Glass.
Do we know it's hardened plastic? I read there may be other manufacturers of hardened glass.

It's not hard to unlock Nokia phones, is it? You should be able to get a $5-$20 unlock code, just like for Blackberry phones...

Sure, but there are tradeoffs with multitasking. My old BBs had "full multitasking" where all my apps would stay in memory unless I closed them, but that sure as hell didn't make the OS any better since it was constantly hanging while the garbage collection would run when switching apps and I needed to reboot the phone almost daily.

Yea old BBs and Android phones had issues with multi-tasking but compare to what they are now it's gotten a lot better and WP8 should strive to always be par or better than the competition.

Hopefully they'll have a surprise in this area when they do the full unveil soon. I'd be ok with them fragmenting the apps so that WP8 apps don't have to restart while the WP7 does just to make progress. WP deserves to be successful but it still has a ways to catch up to be as feature rich as Android and IOS

CT - German's biggest (?) enthusiast tech magazine has their huge iPhone 5 coverstory, screentests compared to "Android devices" and so on.
A page before that, the 920 squashed into the corner together with the HTC WP8 phones in a small article that just covers the basics. Basically "It has a screen with this and that, a camera which is apparently good, and has WP8..."

Sad.

How is that surprising? No-one was allowed to get their hands on the 920 at the launch event and the iPhone is already out. There really isn't much to write about it.

I thought this was from winbeta, not winunleaked? But you can go back and compare, those pics had the new logos, this has the old.

Oh, maybe so. I saw the link at wmpoweruser and they said WinUnleaked, but I wouldn't be surprised if they got it incorrect.

Lumia 920 - even captures nipples.
although I have to say I noticed some wobbly effects in the video, I guess that's when the OIS kicks in?

I'm sure I'm like everyone else who wants more info, but it's really a bummer that there isn't more on release dates yet. I get the feeling it's more like they don't know than anything marketing related

Edit: Captured using handheld 920 prototype (except the audio)

Elop is such a smooth talker.

I'm pretty sure he got his position just by talking.

"Hi, I'm Stephen Elop and I want to be CEO of this company"
"Oh, sure. Please follow me. Here's your office."

Also, big props to him for taking her seriously. I'd have a hard time with that.

End of October/beginning of November.

There's your launch date. What has changed now?
