true but he does have a point that the carriers are boycotting microsoft/nokia (apart from At&t's recent push with the lumia 900). whether you believe that's because the phones suck or because microsoft bought Skype, it's a point worth considering.

The carriers that aren't supporting Windows Phone now weren't really supporting it pre-Skype purchase either. In addition, everything points to them jumping back in for Windows Phone 8.

I really don't think Josh Topolsky whores his reviews out for clicks. Fanboyism is dumb, people lose objectivity and assume that there is an agenda on his part. Smartphone wars are like sports these days. The
slightest hint of any controversy and objectivity tends to go out the window for the supposed wrong party.

I wouldn't be surprised with this either.... its pretty obvious he knew what he was writing (afterall he knows more than we do) and then got all bent out of shape when people attacked. He discovered that of all things it was the lumia 900 that would drive clicks (and not apple products like in the past) and capitalized on it. This is just another one to stir up the beehive.

That said I still think ms should be putting out real windows 8 on a note like device so people can start to abandon carriers for phone services and leverage something like skype to get people beyond carriers in general.

And on what network would Microsoft run it?

i dont know the EU landscape, but ATT and Tmo are both selling devices. I'm sure "shelf space" isn't cheap for a device that ATT has tried to push multiple times. If it picks up sales, carriers will sell more. No one is boycotting it for any particular reason then it doesnt sell.

Verizon/Tmo were the only carrier pushing Android, much in the same way ATT/Tmo support WP now. It took ATT quite a long time to get anything non shit for Android even AFTER it started selling a lot. Conspiracy theories abound...

Problem is both the iPhone and Android got their start being on limited carriers with not a ton of competition. WP has to compete with both on AT&T/TMO, and the actual employees just were ignoring the platform which translates to less customers picking up a phone.

It hasn't been until the 900 that MS really tried to improve this situation by upping the incentives for retail employees and pushing for free phones for them to use as well. Before none of this was happening, and so we were getting shitty sales. I'm not saying doing these new things will make the platform fly off the shelves, but it has to help to some extent.

And on what network would Microsoft run it?

For now it would have to run on the 4g networks but even that experience is far better than dealing with the carrier directly. just put in your credit card on the device and bypass contracts and all that extra junk. Also is a $30 vs $75+ bill.

Long term read into what ms is doing in the whitespace wifi arena.... ms has done alot of R&D in that space. That is the real future of wireless data networks imo.

Both Apple and Google explored that possibility and then stepped away. Presumably there's a reason for that.

They said its an issue devs know about but haven't had much support from MS on. Every app like WhatsApp has negative reviews because notifications not working. Basically, all IM apps are broken on the platform as a result
So far at least, GoVoice seems to be working for me. Obviously the caveat being no MMS.

Oooh! The rise of all these anti-Windows Phone is getting me excited. Its all gearing up for a big splash of an ending this year with WP8 and then it'll end with a cliffhanger where bloggers will ask, "Did Windows Phone 8 help Microsoft survive the great Mobile Phone wars? Find out next year!"

Can't wait till the season finale to all this. /clickallthearticles

IE is a nice browser but bloody fuck is it slow. Any viable alternatives?

The more I use my Lumia the more things I like about it. Definitely not without its charm.

No non-IE browsers (all 3rd party browsers just use the IE engine with a different UI). Even if someone wrote one though, it'd be significantly slower because it'd be in Silverlight instead of native code. Windows Phone 8, I guess :p

Definitely one of those areas where multi core would be nice.

I guess they'll work it out. Safari was painful on the 3G but when I upgraded to iOS4 and the iPhone 4 it worked beautifully. IE works nicely, but its just slow.

Who do you think owns/runs "the 4g networks?" Those are ALSO "the carriers." There is also currently a spectrum crunch going on in the US, so there literally is not space in the wireless spectrum for microsoft to "swoop in" with a nationwide 4g option unless they buy out someone like Tmobile to do it...and then there's antitrust issues to consider if they do.

Unless you just want your device to be WiFi only, it's useless without carrier backing- and in that case you could always just buy an ipod touch.

Keep in mind also that most people are only willing to jump on the smartphone bandwagon because these phones are all HEAVILY subsidized by the carriers. instead of paying $99-199, they'd be paying $499-599 up front. Good luck with that.

I won't go to these sites and support them with clicks. They are all just jumping on the Verge "hating on WP" bandwagon.

*hugs my Lumia*

I'm one of those people that still has a dumb phone. But with telemarketers forcing my phone into silence 100% of the time and donotcall being a joke, I want to get a smart phone for the ability to block calls. I want to get Apollo because Metro's GUI shits over Droid's and Apple's, but I'm not finding call blocking apps. That's more important...even if Droid and Apple's GUI looks like a sea of Windows XP desktop icons.

So are there call blocking apps? Ideally I would like the ability to load a wiki style file that black lists ALL telemarketer numbers and blocks ALL of them. Really tired of these fuckers.

But if that's not possible, something like not getting a ring for unknown numbers and the ability to tap a block button when receiving a call.

If no such feature or app exists, I'm probably going Droid.

I haven't really used the feature yet, but I think Google Voice offers most of what you are looking for. Granted there's no tap to block as far as I know, but you can block a number after ... it has a black list to block known telemarketers ... and you can configure it to automatically send unknown (not in your contacts) numbers to voice mail instead of ringing you.

I imagine the integration is better on Android obviously (maybe it does tap-to-block), but most of the functionality is on Google's server, not the phone. So you can configure, etc. on the web page regardless of what phone you're using.

Right now I'm testing out GoVoice (WP7 free app) and it seems to be working quite well, though I haven't used the voice services yet. Been using it for SMS and it's quite quick. If things continue to function well in more robust testing, I'm dropping my messaging plan

Sure is a lot of hate this week. I just feel bad for Nokia, the Lumia is a beautiful looking phone. I hope may be all these hate will result in Microsoft moving Windows Phone 8 up. I still feel they are 6 months behind where they should be.

I wouldn't say 6 months, but I would say a Summer release to get the new version of the OS out would behoove them verses waiting till the Fall/Holiday run up to get WP8 out.

It doesn't help either that beyond the low cost Tango stuff for emerging markets there will basically be 6 months of nothing platform wise. No OS big OS updates, no big phones, no big things that'll move the platform forward. The 900 is great, but beyond the 900 it's 4-6 months of cloudy malaise. Plus the competition is hardly going to be standing still.

The new HTC One Variants are all starting to hit across the world, Samsung is gearing up for their next "Jesus Android Device," and you know very well Apple is hard at work on an iPhone successor which could drop anytime from the start of Summer onward. I just don't feel MS has the luxury of waiting that long when WP is in last place.

I would definitely like to see Apollo sooner rather than later. Ideally we could get Apollo on Gen 2 (and hopefully Gen 1) phones soon with another new set a features for when WP8 comes out.

The issue with getting out Apollo early is that it isn't being developed on an island.

All signs point to WP8 using some variant of WinRT and IE 10. Before they could even begin serious development of the Windows Phone ports, the originals had to be fairly far along. Then once the porting begins, they still have to work on the SDK and VS updates to use it, etc.

It would be one thing if this was happening in a vacuum, but the reality is it's very dependent on other teams ... and the timeline makes such a releases unrealistic.

The white looks much better. Really hope Verizon gets some new phones in by the time I get an upgrade.

Another question I was hoping you guys could help me out with. Is there some reason I'm unable to download podcasts on my phone? I try to subscribe and I try to download podcasts but nothing happens. It'll just sit there with the download button grayed out after I press it. I have the phone charging and hooked up to a wifi connection. Any ideas?

Kernel is basically done though at least for WinRT and IE 10 is out in a usuable form already. Anything else that really needs to be done to IE 10 wouldn't necessarily be mobile specific anyways.

I'm with you on the SDK though, but that doesn't mean they couldn't fast track it as it should be high priority.

It looks fantastic, but the gloss plastic doesn't provide it the superior and awesome hand feel of the cyan, black, or magenta colors.

Yup, had all in hand and the white is a bit slippy compared to the others.

here with white theme and like I said, I actually prefer the dark theme with this phone.

edit: the autocorrect made the white on the phone a bit too cream-like. It's much brighter to the eyes.

edit2: 8107 should fix the 800 issues, right?

Fuck, the white looks so good.
Yeah it does. I really hope Nokia releases a white gel case for us plebes.

I understand that. What I'm saying is that they had to wait for it to be at a certain point before even beginning the ports.

This isn't like Mango, or an iOS or Android revision. Those were iterative - this is a full OS rewrite. Granted the designs for the layout and base services are already complete ... but the actual implementation is basically from scratch.

They had to wait for the Windows team, and only then begin. Then it has to go through a ton of testing ... etc. It's a very different beast then a normal yearly upgrade.

While I LOVE the hand feel of mine ... I actually have some concerns with how slippery it is. Going with a gel case because I feel like I'm going to drop it too easily.

I take it no one has experienced the problem I posted about above? =/
Thus far I haven't, though I haven't used data extensively.

What's weird is mine was a 'green dot' rev of the phone, but there was still a Zune update when I was setting things up. I was under the impression mine was already upgraded. Either way, I'll post if I have any problems.

Microsoft made Skydrive less terrible, hurray!

Microsoft announced several changes to its SkyDrive cloud storage service today, introducing features that improve the usability for its web and Windows Phone-based users. SkyDrive now supports the Open Document Format (ODF), an XML-based file format supported in a number of word processing apps including Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, and Corel's WordPerfect.

Although ODF support is the more noteworthy addition to SkyDrive, Microsoft has also added a few more features that it thinks are "pretty cool." These include an option to share files to Twitter from the SkyDrive web interface and the ability to upload 300MB files in the browser. Windows Phone users will be happy to hear that images shared via Twitter will now be shortened using Microsoft's sdrv.ms URL shortener, rather than a large link pointing to skydrive.com. Microsoft rounded off its SkyDrive announcement today with the promise of "some really big things coming soon," and with persistent rumors about an imminent release of Google Drive, we'd expect the company is ready for an inevitable head-to-head clash with Google.

Now bring me my real Live Mesh with the online desktop back.

Thanks. I don't have issues downloading anything else off the marketplace, just podcasts.

I downloaded an app to download the podcasts I'm looking for, but that shouldn't be necessary.

Does anyone have these setting on their AT&T branded Lumia 900? I certainly don't.

Picture was taken from a AT&T branded 900 from andantech's lumia 900 review

My Titan will download podcasts even if not charging, checked the file size and each episode was 50mb+ so not sure what's going on.

IF you go Droid, check out a CyanogenMod rom. They usually have blacklisting built right in.

I'm sure WP7 has something to accommodate though.
