It seems like you're watching a dangerous amount of non-Gundam properties. I guess you they're all related to 'space' though.

I'm not complaining or anything, after all I wouldn't wish Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory on anyone.

Moshidora
Sketchbook
Kamichu!
I think if we're simply talking about great animes, I'd considered none of those as one honestly.

Kamichu has some great individual episodes, but the series as a whole isn't representative of that same quality, so it's an eventual demise of unfulfilled expectations mainly. Moshidora's rather subpar because a typically average baseball story poorly developed with poorly handled drama that's awfully melodramatic at times. And Sketchbook overall is good but I wouldn't call it great myself. I don't believe I'm the only one who shares similar sentiments toward those 3 titles, and it's why you don't see them recommended as highly.

On my phone and in class right now. Will elaborate later.

That's the perfect one line description of Guilty Crown.

I would agree if we were talking about earlier in the series, but it's really gone in a direction that I think is amazing since episode 11. I guess there is still a bit of wasted potential with the voids, but other than that I'm satisfied.

Thanks, that is exactly my point.

You don't like these animes or whatever. And I love these animes. Taste (espencially if we are talking about animes or music, books too) is ever unique.

The Light of El Cantare
I watched Milos again, and having seen it twice now I can pretty accurately pin point the exact moment in the film where it starts to completely fall apart.

Right after Ashley kills Atlas brutally, which was an awesome scene, he does this "I'm the badass final boss" pose while standing on the landing above the characters, and starts making this speech about using the Truth to create a new world. I felt that was the exact moment where the movie suddenly shifted from a relatively above average action movie with a strong political focus, into a totally generic shounen fight movie.

You have Ed and Ashley arguing over totally pointless philosophies while fighting, while the "world" the movie is set in faces certain destruction if Al and Julia fail to stop the lava, etc. All the stakes are suddenly raised to insane levels and all the plot developments in that short span of time basically have nothing to do with the other 90 minutes of the film before it. Yeaaaaaah.

Yeah, he kind of went from
vengeance-seeker to megalomaniac
rather seamlessly there.

There are countries other than America which have space programs, or so I've heard.

My original point was that the few people who become astronaut pilots even in our limited space program are typically culled from military ranks (or are commercial pilots) with extensive experience usually as test pilots, and even jet pilots are not just popped in F-35s without extensive training first. Basically I think the portrayal of spaceflight in Honneamise is a little TOO ramshackle although I realize that that's part of the point of the film wrt the value of military assets vs. spaceflight. I wouldn't say it's very much of a problem with the movie given the strength of the realism in it overall, just a little niggling thing.

If Hito wants to attack a NASA funding strawman, though, that's cool too I guess.
The central point is that the space program was seen as something of little value, so why bother putting anyone in that program except people who can't be of "real use"? My example with NASA is just that, an example of this devaluation.

Och come on. Guilty Crown characters are nowhere near as annoying as Eureka 7 ones. Renton is almost Eva's Shinji level of fail.

Man, what's with all this hate for Eureka Seven's characters? I can't really say that I liked many of them, but I never despised them.

I clearly didn't go to the write classes, no-one ever showed Planetes in any of them.
I watched Angels Egg and Cat Soup among others for a class about anime. This was a year or so ago though.

See, that was never offered around here! Although I guess I could trek over to London and see Helen McCarthy....

Eh, you're missing my point. I was simply in disagreement with you calling them great. Hell, I didn't even imply I didn't like any of them. I'm fully aware taste is subjective and all that, but I was merely saying why those titles don't get mentioned as often. Especially Kamichu. It exemplifies great individual episodes doesn't make a series great. They're great individual episodes however. This isn't the same as having a bad arc in an otherwise good series although some might feel the two are equivalent. I'm just saying it's something to be conscious of when recommending a series to someone or you'll be setting them up for disappointment as an overall experience besides questioning your admission of Moshidora.

Of course, recommendations are highly dependent on each respective individual, but taste doesn't preclude discussing criticisms.

Show continues to look great. Maybe I just didn't notice it as much before this episode, but the faces are extremely expressive with a pretty wide range, and it really got played up this week. As far as content goes this show still feels weird. It sets the pieces up to play the harem game but then it actually operates under romantic comedy sensibilities in the way things play out. Because of this it often feels rather genuine even in spite of its often exploitative nature. It is certainly proving itself to be a better show than I initially thought it to be.

Did you read my post(s) or were you just being condescending for the sake of it? ("jets are expensive too lols") I understand that, and my point is that in the real world the position of astronaut pilot is still valued & difficult to obtain even if rarefied and even if the American public is unwilling to fund its further existence. I even pointed out in my original response to Haly that I understand why this point is intentionally flipped in the portrayal of the alternate universe of the film.
That's actually what's bothering me. You're too caught up in the American space experience. Just because we demanded the best and the brightest doesn't mean others wouldn't do it differently.

Those little apostrophe's are very important in anime! Didn't Working use it too?

Tatami Galaxy 8

This wasn't as bad as I expected, but things are still rather dull.

Part of what made the previous episode so bad was that I really couldn't understand the protagonist's reverence for
Keiko, Jougasaki's doll, especially after she'd seemed like such a joke when she was first introduced. There are plenty of weird absurdities in that show, but that one never fully made sense.
I see more of myself in the protagonist than I'd like, but that time it felt like some weird meaningless digression.

In this episode, I liked how the art depicted his embellishments of his character until he became this hyper-suave worldly gentleman. I related to the feeling that, given enough time, you think you might be able to transform yourself into the idealized person in your head. And I liked that ultimately the message was that all of those fictions meant nothing compared to confidence.

This episode ended in an unusual way, with
Ozu's face transparently superimposed over the rewinding clocks
, so I'm wondering if I'll see a different direction for the protagonist in the coming episodes. I'd appreciate that.

You know something is very, very wrong with a new Gundam series if the first volume of the series cannot even outsell the DVD box set re-release of some other 5 year old Sunrise series. :)

Wont they (Level 5) be more interested in tie-in merchandising anyway? I mean, it's a kid show, I wouldn't expect it to sell to them.
Haha. Even the plamo are massively flopping. It's really weird to see how Level5 totally misjudged the market on this one. I'm glad though, because it's really the furthest from what I want out of a new Gundam franchise.

Oh, well, I guess that's that then.

Summer Wars

Ha.

Ha ha.

GAF, you were kidding when you ranked this movie so high, right? Or did I just come in with too much expectations?[...]

If you'd only listened to my wise words then you'd have got your expectations in check. Summer Wars isn't a particularly good movie, but neither is it a particularly bad movie. It has a cast of characters that some people like, a nonsense story, and pretty animation. It's forgettable.
What's a Plamo?

I have the answer for you right here.

A Good Citizen
Explain your reasoning for choosing this dark horse candidate, please.
It needs explaining? Fun, up-beat entertainment filled ride with lively visuals, likable characters, and FUN.

No obnoxious environmentalist overtones or dead boring pacing, which is a rare occasion for Miyazaki. A++

If there is any impact at all, it will mean that Sunrise and Bandai will focus more on the older core market now and spend more money targeting our taste than that of younger children.

Well, with Gundam Unciorn doing so well I'd hope that's the message they take away from this experiment.

Anncast Sexism Episode 2/10/2012 (I think this fits here?)
This show is usually bad...but this episode is borderline surreal. At first I found the whole situation funny. The ANNcast ringleader rounded up a bunch of women to get indignant about sexism. Some ways in things turned more sad. Is this really the way people think? In an effort to combat what they think is sexist a bunch of people cast aspersions over large swathes of people both in and out of the context of anime.

Now I'm mostly just confused. Like, how am I supposed to process the level of stupidity, snobbery, and ignorance here? This is only exacerbated by the context of having a conversation that is supposed to confront a type of discrimination. By the end of the podcast, everything was just offensive.

The messages I'm left with are that women can be whatever they want, as long as it is X, Y, and Z. Also, women shouldn't fall in love with men ever, because that would mean they are dependent on men, and that would be horrible and sexist.

The more I think about the things in this podcast the more confused I am. How is Mirai Nikki sexist? The whole show is based around two people who need each other to survive. This is augmented with a strain on that relationship by the psychotic inducing trauma one of the two had, but nothing about the show really strikes me as painting one gender in a specific way. How is B Gata H Kei sexist? Because it's about a girl who is interested in a guy that's less attractive than her? The absurdity of the examples peaks with K-on, which evidently uses girls being friends and hanging out as a device to propagate some yuri agenda that is also sexist.

This podcast is probably the most pathetic thing I will listen to all year. A bunch of people out of touch with reality vilify men and women with different sets of ideals and philosophies for being "sexist" or something. I don't even know anymore, but wow, this was just really disgusting.

You're really selling me on it right. That sounds thoroughly amazing. Thankfully I have no desire to waste my time or else I'd probably put that on right now. It's no surprise that people with questionable podcasting abilities/ability to formulate cogent arguments would trip over themselves when talking about such a topic but that sounds better than I could ever have hoped.

Yeah, I hadn't seen your comments on Summer Wars but I wish I did. I was expecting something amazing and was really let down.

War Games did the whole A.I-fighting-back concept so much better. Or perhaps that's just nostalgia talking.
