Garo the Animation - Episode 24 (End)

Fantastic end to a fantastic series. The climax hits all the right notes even though it was mostly predictable. Garo is a great example of how execution and details are far more important than being different for the sake of being different. There are no crazy twists or attempts to mislead the audience to string them along here. It just delivers the dark fantasy action adventure which you expect, but in a really entertaining way with solid effort. One thing I particularly like about the series is that throughout the series, there is very little reuse of action ideas, so almost every fight and set piece feels fresh all the way to the end. They came up with all sorts of different scenarios to ensure that scenes are memorable on their own.

Can't wait for the movie later this year. I hope someone distributes it in cinemas here!

Golden Time is the perfect sequel to my favorite movie
Ghostbusters

don't read that unless you want a hint of a plot point lol

Jokes aside I appreciate they made a show set in college and even with the melodrama, 2d-kun carries the show

for you:
R3AJCAF.gif

But really, it's not a
ghost
it's just a visualization of
his lost memories and inner thoughts
the one and only time it acts
as a ghost is the whole ring thing at the end
, which yes, it felt out of place considering the rest of the anime, but even with that, the show was great. I got some feels for Banri and best girl in there.... Good Stuff!

Saw the description, I didn't really like it. :/

I don't know what the description may have implied but it's a laid back show about a struggling college student. It's not as miserable as it sounds when I say 'struggling college student'. It has light humor and is very relaxing to watch.

A lot of things were stuff I could relate to during my college days because I was in a rural area at that time. I picked it after watching Haibane Renmei which is my all time favorite and Niea_7 is from the same creator Yoshitoshi ABe.

Although the show stereotypes Indians with an "Indian alien", at the end of every episode there is a Sardar who speaks in Japanese, shares some facts about India lol. I don't think I've seen Indians appear for anime that way.

Golden Time was bad and did everything I hate in romance anime with a supernatural dusting that came out of nowhere and just made shit worse.

yay or nay?
Mayb-

Its a bad anime that will soon be forgotten. Disappointing writing.

I agree with DTL.

I also agree with DTL.

Yes but it's still bad.

You will like the first few episode, then you won't care anymore.

Nay. Some parts of the show were extremely well directed (ferris wheel for instance) but the writing is just so bad. So damn bad. Maybe just listen to the OST instead.
Oh.

Personally, I agree with NaDann's comments. Fantastic direction, amazing soundtrack, and bad, bad writing that eats at the show like a cancer. For me, its high points and ambition make it worthwhile regardless, even if it doesn't succeed, but that's just me.
Sounds like a good hate watch at least, lol.
It isn't a good hatewatch, though.

I didn't really like the fact this has aliens. I may consider it because it seems to lean more to the slice of life side of it, but I'm not fond of the premise.

WELL EXCUUUUUUSE ME.

I didn't realize School Days, a 12 episode show that horrifies people, and Eureka Seven, a 50 episode classic of the mecha genre had that much in common!

I agree. One was short, funny and taught you important real life lessons while the other was 50 episodes of delusional bla bla bla love trumps all. So yeah they don't have that much in common.

you all focus too much on what you want the story to tell or what you feel/think the story should tell, rather than just accepting what the story beign presented is. Enjoy more & love more, hate less, lol. Don't worry, be happy! Acceptance is important.

On a more important note. 1 mins to go.

Wanting a story to be something different is a subset of having higher standards when the show is shitty.

I WANTED True Detective S2 to be something different because it was a horrible sequel to a fantastic first season that showed just how much of a hack the creator is when given George Lucas freedom to do whatever he wants.

If you're referring to Golden Time, I quit watching because what happened was bad and dumb, not because it went against some sort of expectation I had going in. Sure, you can say I wanted it to be different... but only because I wanted it to be better.

ghost banri was the dumbest shit I've ever seen

It's very goofy, no question, but at least it's some form of antagonist.
Without it, Banri just happens to have a relapse before coming clean to all his friends. Or he just "knows" he's going to lose his new memories for good and be replaced by his old self.
If they're going to introduce this silly concept, might as well embrace it and make some of the show's plot points less random.

There are 3 things which are very wrong with Garo the Animation. Otherwise it's a great series I would recommend to anyone.

#3:
Bloody brother, bloody brother
An accomplice in inheriting this destiny
Bloody brother, bloody brother
Lights and shadow, whose soul will be the one to survive!

Bloody brother, bloody brother
Your blade cuts through destiny
Bloody brother, bloody brother
Lights and shadow, Which of the roads will we take together!

#2:

No way, no way, no way. Bring me up
No way, no way, no way. Somebody tell me why

Kino's Journey 10

You can see the twist in this episode coming a mile away but the revelation is still shocking. Nice episode centered around family and self-worth. Worked as a nice breather after the intensity of the last episode.

Kino's Journey 11

Episode posed two really big questions.

What is most important thing in the life?
Not to lose it.

What are the only true words in the world?
There is no such thing.

Episode contrasted Kino to others on their own journeys through life. Kino's lack of emotion at times really portrays her as very cold-hearted at times though from her perspective no one the right to pass judgement on anyone.

Kino's Journey 12

Up there with episode 2 as the most harrowing episode. Why is every country in this show so messed up?

Episode revolved around the sacrifices made for peace and how peace is ultimately built on a foundation of violence. The war scene...jesus it was gruesome. Again the show does a fantastic job of laying out the reasoning of all parties involved, that by persecuting a minority, the majority can enjoy peace.

The final scene were Kino is forced to
kill one of the persecuted minority is really unsettling, just for Kino's reaction alone.

Kino's Journey 13 End

Great parallel episode of Kino to cap off the series. Even though the show makes it clear that Kino's journey isn't over and will never end it still serves as a good conclusion by showing the contrast of a young girl who chooses the exact opposite of Kino's lifestyle.

Series Overview

Pros:
A really intelligent show. Able to present complex issues in a natural way.
Is never obtuse or preachy in its storytelling.
Kino's a fascinating character. She's strong, fragile, has a great dry wit, practical, surprisingly narrow minded at times and disciplined.

Cons:
Makes a lot of other shows look very shallow in comparison.

So yeah this show's incredible and can't wait to watch the OVAs, which are made by SHAFT somehow. That'll be interesting I guess.

Having "Full Monty" as an episode title makes up for this bit of Engrish.

Garo's 2nd OP was amazing duckroll. Stop.

LIGHT AND SHADOW

I don't mind the second Garo OP song much, even though it is not as good as the first OP song and is too jazzy to set the proper tone. The second ED song, though...

They're pre-Shinbo Shaft, so don't expect what Shaft has become known for.

I read this as "The I thing I don't like about Kino's Journey is that it's almost too good."

ala that one picture with Ryan O'Donnell.

I liked the jazzy tone of the second op the most and I thought the vocals were fantastic. This combined with the visuals and the way the camera goes past Leon and Alfonso's faces.

Yeh, School Days at least has the decency to end everyone's suffering after only 12 episodes. 👍

Glad you enjoyed the show! It's a darn shame it doesn't get more attention here. This is a show I feel can show to people who don't even like anime!

lol it does read like that.

But im kind of in a state of "why can this show(Kino) accomplish more in 20 minutes than some full series can?" Like I usually don't care enough to post an impression for every episode of a series but every episode was so good and layered.

My goodness is this show well done; I mean, unbelieveably well done. That scene in the last 4 mins with the
"Christmas tree"
had such great visuals and ambiance to really set the mood and feeling of everything going on, her excape from her cruel world. Awesome stuff. I didn't recognize that person
in sensei's office at the end, was that the useless father?
I'm starting to lean towards him being the killer!

Being "too predictable" is one of my least favorite criticisms to see leveled at a work. As if the element of surprise was the most important criteria for judging a narrative. I can understand the appeal of twists blindsiding you from left field - that's what makes people consistently gravitate towards Sunrise originals such as Code Geass and all its imitators - but that's a very superficial way of putting together a narrative. It's not that hard to come up with nonsensical shocking twists. It's much harder to carefully plan a narrative such that everything makes logical sense: characters behave in a consistently developed manner, the world has certain rules that it follows, the principle of cause and effect is respected. That's the kind of story that will earn the most admiration from me.

Can't wait for the movie later this year. I hope someone distributes it in cinemas here!

With Funimation stepping up their distribution of films in the US, and them having the license to Garo already, hopefully they will pick up the film. At least with Funimation I know their films will be shown in my city, unlike with Aniplex.

It's the teacher and satorus classmate, the guy who are silent is smart.

and yeah this is 10/10 this far. I'm loving the VA too, it feels fresh kinda. I don't know how to explain it.
The visuals are top notch and the intrigue is even better, I love mystery shows and I'm having a blast with this at this point.

I've got to say that KonoSuba's actually more entertaining than I thought it'd be with how it never takes itself seriously, instantly differentiating it from 90% of "taken to a fantasy RPG world" shows. Too bad we didn't get the PAUSE screen for the intermission this time around though, since I kind of liked that touch.

I also started watching KareKano and Yamato 2199. The former's a bit weird with how it introduces new characters and has them undergo some kind of development extremely fast (like with the guy's "friend" in ep5, I think), but it's still handled well enough to make it entertaining to watch anyway. One thing I noticed is the show sometimes throws too many things onscreen at once, making it kind of hard to read them all in time, an I also remember having heard the OP a long time ago, but I don't remember the show at all.

Yamato has that amazing OP that screams old-school, but it hasn't been all that interesting so far (up to ep4). The CG spaceships look a bit bland and the story feels dated with how it treats women so far (and yeah, I know it's a remake of an old series, so I guess that's to be expected), with the MC kind of having a crush on that alien girl and how that other girl who didn't like him became friends with him after he was assigned as her escort and saved her from being kidnapped by alien robot things (even though she did manage to escape from her captor's grip on her own). Then again there was that girl that sneaked into a spacecraft and ended up helping save the day, so maybe it's just that I still haven't watched enough episodes to know where things arae going yet.

If you're going to watch Crimson Moon, you might as well watch the live-action Garo shows. But I feel that what Garo the Animation achieved is due to the vision of Yuichiro Hayashi and his team, not due anything drawn from the larger franchise in particular.

The original Space Battleship Yamato series is much worse in its depiction of women. There is literally only one female on the ship (Yuki), and her main purpose in what I saw was to be groped and fondled by the robot. 2199 is a welcome modernization of the narrative in that regard, as in many other regards.

Erased Episode 3:

Fair warning the Wikipedia article on this series has some massive spoilers in the character descriptions which is unfortunate for somebody to go there when they just want the names of the cast of characters. Anyway, yea, that was among the more raw, disturbing and unsettling things I have seen in anime in recent memory and a good way to make me hate a character with the fiery passion of a thousand suns. Also, nice try with those sweet moments of sentimentality but they just don't work when I am legit pissed at somethign that happened 10 minutes before.

YES. It's still great and I'm enjoying it more and more.

The mystery aspect is still not central, but not out of the picture, the show is still building Satoru's relationship with Hinazuki and I'm completely fine with it, they handle everything perfectly. I was actually a bit sad at first that there were two certain "lie" scenes that seemed to indicate that their relationship was falling apart, but Satoru's readiness to defend Hinazuki about the money issue and that AMAZING final scene, proved that it's still going strong. Hinazuki actually seems to open up a lot more to Satoru.

I'm also really relieved that the school, particularly the teacher, took notice of Hinazuki's home abuse and he's actually about to do something. It would be weird if nobody noticed it. On that matter...That isn't a mother, that's a monster. Very shocking scene, it was really hard to watch. And that father(?) also seems like a complete asshole. Poor Hinazuki. :(

Other than this, I'm looking forward to more about Yuuki. The shots of the future him were devastating. If he's really not bad, which seems to be the case, I wonder what led to him be framed. Also, the teacher... I'm not sure what he's going to turn out to be. The shot I quoted was really ominous, he resembles the guy in the OP but he doesn't seem bad. Maybe a bit too sharp, like Kenya. I wonder what that quick final shot between those two is going to be.

Again, that final scene! The show is gorgeous. Something that made me think was the ice skating race. I wonder how many times Satoru is going to take a bad decision.

Eeeeeeeeh. Didn't like this episode very much. This wasn't the fun kind of stupid I signed up for, this was mostly the stupid kind of stupid.
And ffs anime, stop designing female characters, giving them a female voice and then deciding they are somehow male if the only reason is so that you can do the generic "But he's a guy" 'joke'. This shit is annoying.

Erased - 03

Continues to be freaking great. That scene where
Kayos mother was shown abusing her
hit really hard. And Satoru even had to see some of it but could do nothing....
Also Satoru telling that little shit to shut up was satisfying.
The episode would have ended on a rather sweet note, if if weren't for the last, ominous shot.

I wasn't sure about how faithful this newer version was to the original, but it's always good to hear they've taken care of those things that'd feel overly out of place nowadays. Still, that reminds me of some old space anime my cousin and I watched thanks to CR's randomizer, where the princess character was given a unique pink spacesuit while the rest of the crew (all males, of course) had regular white ones, which probably made capturing her that much easier by the bad guys. The way anime used to treat women is certainly ludicrous looking back, and thinking that such a thing was widely accepted as a standard back then feels wrong on so many levels...

Does anyone know when and how things started to change? I know Miyazaki has had strong female characters as main characters for quite a while, but now I'm wondering if there were any other series or authors that also influenced that change from within (I mean, outside of society changing and no longer accepting that kind of degradation of women in media).
