what is the true difference between a LN and a Novel?

I always considered Hibike! Euphonium a novel since each volume is over 300 pages.

True art.

Also, I'll say that the superior anime adaptation of a Kumeta manga is Joshiraku. Tsutomu Mizushima does a great job with the direction, and the show is very attractive thanks to Masayoshi Tanaka's beautiful character designs.

Was SAO ever considered poorly directed?

From what I've seen, the direction is competent at best. I'd also say that about much of Silver Spoon S1, barring episode 10. Certainly none of Ito's prior work made me think he could pull off what he's done on Erased so far.

Publication.

Publishers like Dengeki Bunko and MF Bunko have the Light Novel Label so their works are Light Novels.

Despite what people initially thought, it has nothing to do with the size of the volumes. Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere has massive volumes each about 3 regular LN volumes in thickness.

The worst criticism I have for Yamato 2199 is that the CG early on is quite weightless, but that gets better as the series progresses. I really enjoyed the Odyssey of the Celestial Ark film when I saw it recently and am excited to see what Izubuchi will do with the second season.

Good to hear that, since it's been one of the things that has stood out like a sore thumb for me out of the measly five episodes I've watched so far.

As for Zetsubou-sensei, I'm also in the same park with how it was fun at first, but the whole cast being so one-note and the show being episodic in nature makes it way less enjoyable in the long run. At times it kind of reminds me of Monogatari minus harem-ish fanservice (okay) and actual character development (not good).

The Vision of Escaflowne - 4

CZTOUlXWYAAvbFR.jpg

THE MECHA TRANSFORMS INTO A DRAGON CONTROLLED BY REINS YES YES THIS IS SO GOOD.

Man, four episodes in and there hasn't been a dull one yet! Every time it looks like things are going to settle down Hitomi gets another vision and things get crazy shortly after!

So it's like the western publishing business where categorization or genre labels are largely a matter of marketing and demographic targets.

Heavy Object Episode 15

There has to be a limit to bad luck:

- Having all your porn confiscated and humiliated in front of 20 years old office ladies.
- Being forced to kick your sexy female superior officer.
- Nearly blown up once, twice, three times.
- Having your G-cup illusions destroyed in front of you.

That said, whoever is that unknown lucky Engineer that both Elites are fighting over must be one hell of an individual. Whoever that person might be. We may never know.

Erased 03

Absolutely delightful production quality. The black borders feel welcome.

I need to see more of the show to comment any further about the narrative but I like the pacing.

Pretty much I guess because,

1) It has nothing to do with size as I've mentioned the example with Horizon.
2) It has nothing to do with genre, as most LN publishers take a variety of genres.
3) It has nothing to do with illustrations, as some Novels also have visual art in them.

Garo: The Crimson Moon - 15

I like the new OP and ED more than the previous ones. Can't have Garo without JAM. Judging by the OP and ED it looks like it's going to turn more darker.

Episode started uninteresting to me but I think it quickly gained momentum with the introduction of the strong and cheerfull 'Tragic Princess'. Hopefully she'll play a bigger part. She's no Seimei, but she'll do. Which by the way was totally absent!
The fight was well above average in terms of this show. It was longer, more detailed and had interesting horror design and abilities. I also liked how it looked most of the time. However by the end it still ended with the usual unsatisfying slash.

All in all I think it was a good episode, that had a nice message to convey. By the looks of it, it seems like the reason for the show title has been revealed. I leave casually optimistic for the future.

I think that's true? But isn't Nisio notorious for all his kanji wordplay? There was that one fight in Medaka Box with the girl who messed with Kanji and the translators said it was a nightmare.

My understanding is that it is generally true besides a few notable exceptions. The reading level is supposed to be lower.

I would imagine that LN also operates with a lower and easier set of kanji.

Yeah, and i think LN use furigana too.

Dagashi Kashi 3

I get my fix of crazy faces for today. Lovely.
Need Hotaru doing more fabulous pose.

Oh hey, we finally get the proper OP and ED animation.

I'm not exactly enjoying his dub voice (he almost sounds like a girl) that much, but he's pretty good as a ruthless villain.

I'm going to go out on a limb and crticise the dub I've heard not a thing of but the glory of Dilandau simply must be savoured in the og audio.

Also,
all dubs suck.

It's probably a loose suggestion like the supposed differences between Middle Grade and Young Adult fiction that are hardly followed strictly either. And successful authors can do whatever they want.

Enjoyable. The action piece is great to look at, and the robot is cute.
Loser looks like Izanagi from P4 for some reason...

Now see everybody, this is a perfect case of commenting before finishing a show.

Yeh, I can count the shows that had a few terrible, and yes, I mean genuinely terrible, first episodes and then turned around on zero hands.

Toradora will not be the exception. You do not redeem the non-existence of good character writing early on by piling it on after the fact, as I've pointed out with the mother's example.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199's success is mainly due to its director and writer, Yutaka Izubuchi, who is a strongly talented creator. Izubuchi began as a mechanical designer; his most prominent work in that regard is doing designs for Patlabor as part of Headgear. He since branched out into directing and writing; he directed Rahxephon and wrote Skull Man. He had a strong vision for how to remake Yamato, and that vision elevates the entire production. There is very strong visual design throughout, from the Yamato monitors to alien planets. The writing is in the tradition of classic science fiction, in the vein of something like Star Trek: The Original Generation, and in addition to being well structured overall has time for episodic diversions such as an exploration of the nature of androids and robots. Even the enemy side gets fleshed out nicely over the course of the series.

The worst criticism I have for Yamato 2199 is that the CG early on is quite weightless, but that gets better as the series progresses. I really enjoyed the Odyssey of the Celestial Ark film when I saw it recently and am excited to see what Izubuchi will do with the second season.

I'd like to also give a brief comment on Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei: it's not bad, and Shaft throws in a lot of gimmicks over the course of the series to try to mix things up, but I felt the formula was getting stale by the end of the first season and so haven't felt motivated to watch beyond that. Also, the production values of the first season are really low. So I wouldn't prioritize that series.

Awesome, thanks. I love a good sci-fi series, and the specific things you mention make that sound really appealing. I was already sold merely on the premise of the vague "good space opera", but this solidifies it as something I expect to really enjoy when I do watch it.

Your unrecommendation for Zetsubou kind of makes me want to watch it first, though, haha. I'm committed to watching it if only because of my friend, and if I don't end up liking it, at least it'll be out of the way. And if I do, then hey, that's a win, too.

Garo Crimson Moon Episode 14

"Insert whatever lame Bloodborne joke you want here."

An enjoyable fight scene at the end can't save this episode from its dull writing.

Another reason why CM is such a step down from the previous season is that it fails to make the horrors interesting. This episode's horror was a guy who fed on beautiful people, because he was obsessed with beauty. That's kind of it. The previous season had people who turned into horrors for sympathetic reasons, or at least pitiable ones. The guy in this episode just seemed like if you raised a frat guy suffering from an extreme fear of becoming elderly in medieval Japan. (He turned into a horror because of a grey hair? Really?) The villains in the previous season were evil, no doubt, but you could understand where they were coming from a lot of the time. We're 14 episodes into this series, and I have no idea why the main villains in Crimson Moon do what they do.

They seem to hate everyone in the show, so I can relate to that I guess?

Can I get a source on that?

This is a rumor I keep seeing float around, but I've never read an interview with Ito where he expressed any dissatisfaction with the show. The closest I have heard is "I really want to work on an anime original." At one point in time, he even said SAO was his favorite anime - of course, I think SAO had just came out so I guess he would say that.

I'm 99% sure that I saw a harpy running around in the OP. I'm not sure how long Rory can hold out.

Also, there is like 2 feet of snow outside my door right now. :l

Well you're wrong about the mother and there is a ton of great character writing especially closer to the back-end but certainly evident earlier on.

It's funny you're pointing out the mother as the climax of the show partially revolves around her issues. The final arc is in some ways about the relationship between her and Ryuuji.

Regarding Zetsubou Sensei, I actually found that the second season was its strongest. While it was using the same formula as the first season, it became even more visually creative. For example, there was an entire segment where everyone was animated as paper dolls. That really elevated the material for me (which was easily on par with the first season), and off-set the repetitiveness. It did get awfully old in season 3 though, so I'm glad they stopped there.

Mononoke 10-12 END

Mononoke is an extensively creative and beautiful show, truly one of a kind. It is well crafted in nearly every facet, from visual direction to framing to horror to the use of color, all which serve the show very well. While the individual stories can be confusing and little is ever done explanation wise, neither of these bothered me because of how creative the show was and there is enough there to fill in the blanks for yourself. For me, the Medicine Seller is a Shinigami there to remove the Mononoke, which shouldn't exist in the human world. This is why he goes after the Mononoke that don't even seem evil, and also why he could magically appear in the Showa era in the last arc, 300 years after the setting in the previous arcs.

To classify this as horror wouldn't be incorrect, but it's a type of horror I've never seen before. Horror typically uses drab and dark colors but Mononoke is extensively colorful. It still utilizes all the horror techniques in sound design and framing but in a way I've never seen before. It's not like Kagewani or Yamishibai, it's not like the works of Junji Ito or Kazuo Umezu, it's not like Silent Hill or Fatal Frame. It's inherently unique.

The one problem I have, and this isn't the shows fault, are Crunchyrolls absolutely TERRIBLE subs. I don't know if this is on CR or Toei for providing the subs, but they are hardsubbed, the dialogue runs over other lines (for example if two characters are talking at the same time, instead of showing both lines, the one who talks second will overrun the first line even if the first line is only shown for half a second. That's not even going into typos and grammatical errors. Amateur hour is too kind for these garbage subs and they are by far the worst subs I've ever seen on a professional site.

Mononoke is truly excellent.

Doubt its CR since the same exists on hulu, so probably cinedigm or whoever provided the subs for them.
