Speaking of this MAL thing, I should also check how long I've spent watching anime as well.

As much as I love the
mother-daughter-bonding
story here, these twists are ass-pulls of the highest order.

Angel Beats! 11

See this is the kind of weight that should've been there the whole time. No stupid
'aww shit we gotta FIGHT but we can't die and somehow we think there's some sort of emotional weight.'
These things really should've been the antagonists from the get go.

Mama mia! These kids are fucking awesome.

Madoka 3
Thoughts during episode

- This kid certainly doesn't look healthy. I predict a wish forming...
- Yup. This is a hospital. She's blushing. I see where this is going.
- Oh..... OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH. Okay.
- Okay OP. Madoka is in middle school. She's underage, alright! Even by anime standards. So this naked pressing up against herself isn't doing it for me.
- Why you have no chin? Dead eyes. Oh god dead eyes!
- That's.... one way to make a wish. Kind of looks like the cat thing took advantage of her situation at the time.
- Man transfer student. Aren't you being a little melodramatic.
- Grief Seed! Oh noes!!! Blue Hair wants to stay back. I know what happens next...
- Ah what? Not Transfer-chan.
- Lamest wish ever Madoka.
- :SDBurton again?
- Mami talked her out of that wish? Good.
- Super Ultra Mega Magic Mami Transformation Activate!
- That was..... AWESOME! The speech was lame but that gunslinging was amazing.
- Oh good job Mami you totally got------............... OH F**K!!!!! OH F**K!!!!!!!!
- This is....... dark.
- Ahhhhhhhhhhhh crap.
I liked her
.
-
Can you wish people back to life? Otherwise this really sucks
.
- This ED is cool and the song is super cool. I like it.

He just hasn't watched other anime with equally touching moments.

He hasn't seen Code Geass or TTGL. He's also currently watching Madoka. I suspect his horizons will most definetly be broadened once he's completed all of those.

Speaking of this MAL thing, I should also check how long I've spent watching anime as well.

In my experience, when you're recommending stuff, saying it's as good or as touching as their favorite thing is a dangerous road to go down.

Not that you're wrong, but setting that expectation primes the viewer to keep making a comparison in their heads to a show they have a fond personal attachment to. Even when that moment hits, the comparison can remove them emotionally from the moment.

For me, when I watched Grave of the Fireflies, I'd heard a lot about how it was the saddest thing ever, so going into it I was kind of hardened to what was to come. I kept thinking, "When does it get super duper sad?" and when that did happen, I was thinking about how I'd reached a really sad part, instead of just experiencing it on my own terms.

If the show is as good as you think, they'll reach your conclusion on their own.

Like anime, for example!

Speaking of which!

Macross 7 8

I've finally cracked the Basara code, guys. The secret to liking him is to realize that he realizes he's trapped in a Kawamori world and the only way to stay alive is to think about whatever makes the most sense at the moment and then do the exact opposite of that in the craziest way possible. I actually found myself sympathetic to him during this episode, though. That wonky producer guy telling him what he could and could not do with his music needed to fuck off. It's one thing if members of the band fight over this stuff, it's another for some weird guy in a red shirt and polkablack tie to tell him what to do with his music.

Meanwhile a 14 year old girl is dating a grown ass man and her mother is totes okay with this!

Where I think Macross 7 excels so far, though, is in having unusual character designs. Like Kawamori shows seem to do that a lot anyway, but seriously, show has some good dang quirky character designs going on.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
When I watched Grave of the Fireflies, I thought to myself, "This was supposed to make me sad, but it's just making me angry".

So yeah, the priming effect is a trap.

Hunter x Hunter 124

Palm is such a badass. When she
sucker punched Pouf's minion into dust I was cheering.
Killua's speech was also really well done and emotional. Didn't feel forced at all.

I wonder if she'll still be interested in him once she sees his current state.

I don't know about you, but skinny ass pansy weak men really turn me on. Not. Gon is best choice. Such a lady killer.

Gon is love, Gon is life.

If you ever became a villain, all we would need to do is fuse Kawamori and Tomino, then transfer their essence into a ray gun and fire it at you.

Though it might make you stronger if you survive...

See, this is why I asked you to watch Madoka and TTGL. I love Clannad After Story and think it's legit amazing, but there are much better anime out there.

We will see. Don't be surprised if I don't agree.

Hyouka doesn't try to invoke maximum emotion through magic and melodrama. You shouldn't expect it to trigger After Story-esque waterworks.

I don't expect it to. Quite frankly I don't want it to. But very few pieces of entertainment can get people to look at their life differently and cherish what they have. That's what Clannad did for me. So yeah maybe people will call me a scrub or whatever. I don't really care. I know I haven't watched every anime ever but I've watched a crap ton enough to give a valid opinion.

as in, he appears incapable of judging a show other than comparing it to Clannad, a problem you don't have

Jesus. What did I ever do to you?

I don't really think I will find anything else that will hit me the way AS did. I have seen much of Code Geass. Just not all of it. I was in the middle of it when CR took it off. Listen I like different genres of anime and all that but I consider something great if it can move me or change me in a significant way. If it only has good action, art and a decent story but doesn't move me or change my view on life then it's not up there with Clannad After Story.

And people always compare certain anime to their favorites. That's human nature. Get over it.

Hi, Hitokage! What else do I have in mind today?

Absolutely nothing.

I agree. Emotions are so subjective, what resonates with one person doesn't necessarily work for another. Each individual has their own personality, their own life experiences and their own general preferences. Stuff other people have found to be engaging are the same things I've found to be completely uninteresting. And my own personal life experiences have had certain shows resonate with me more than perhaps they do with other folks.

Clannad AS for me is about as emotionally invested as I have ever gotten into an anime. I realize that "keyshit" as some folks like to call it isn't for everybody but it certainly was for me.

If you put Kawamori and Tomino together it would either be the best mecha anime of all time by sheer virtue of being batshit insane or the worst mecha anime of all time by sheer virtue of spoiling all its batshit insanity with preachiness of an inordinate size.

Nah, it starts at episode
10, when the real protagonist is revealed.

Keep hoping darkside vs hito is this extended work that'll culminate with them contending against Dresden and Duckroll (The Moderation) in the squared circle for the tag team title belt at Animemania XXXI.

Once hito and darkside have the upper hand, darkside's name will turn red and we'll all be legit shook when it's 3 vs 1

also cajun's 21 thread streak ends

I will never understand the appeal of things like MAL or Hummingbird.

Soul Eater Not! Episode 1:

Yea, this was about as painful as I thought it would be. In a nutshell this show really wants to be K-On! like even the moeblob designs had me flashing back to the dreaded K-On!
Also, the year of yuri continues as we have for some reason a lesbian love triangle under the guise of "choosing a mister." Yea, even the show is acknowledging that yea this is exactly what we think it is and thus SD Burton was made happy.
Anyway, most of the cameos and references came off as nothing more then sheer gratuity. Still better then the filler parts of the Soul Eater TV Show we dubbed in ToonamiGAF as BONES Eater. Still, it is rather vexing to see one of the more creative worlds of anime reduced to a very generic slice of life high school entry. I will give this a little more time since it has more personality then say Black Bullet but not by much.

Well, all I hope is that you enjoy them in the end at the very least. And if you find that you don't, I'm cool with that too. I just recommend shows that I think are legit good and that everyone who likes anime should at least see through to the end before making a judgement.

And yes, you're right about people always comparing certain anime to their favourites. I do that as well.

Pfft, it started in ep 1.

But episode 3 is where everybody lost their heads over it!

I wish this anime was half as good as K-On! then I might actually stick with it

But episode 3 is where everybody lost their heads over it!

Nice pun at the end.

The last sentence was meant more for the entire group. That comment was for everyone I was responding to, especially Envelope. But I get the feeling he doesn't like me much anyways because I like something he doesn't. Oh well. I am not gonna dwell on it.

I am sure I will enjoy them a lot just like how someone recommended me Toradora and I liked that a lot. I am not incapable of liking recommended anime. I just think you're overhyping it just a bit. But that's to be expected if it's your favorite. I am not gonna hold it against you or the anime in question. :)

It's more that it's just when people who couldn't see all of the signs in the first two and a half episodes are incapable of missing it anymore due to the show deciding to make explicit what was implicit already.

What could you possibly miss? The show slaps you in the head over and over again about all these concepts.

Look, I'm sure we all knew that there was something ominous about Madoka from the beginning.

What we didn't know was that
a frigging worm clown was going to shoot out of doll to bite a teenage girl's head off. That's when you realize that the show really isn't going to screw around.

If you're an optimist, it means you should be disappointed because there's still so much good anime to watch!

...That sounds more like I should be relieved, and that I should prepare for more entertainment in the future.
