Oh yeah, just look at Twilight as THE absolute example that written by a woman =/= good female characters, but FMA did do a better job than the vast majority of stuff out there at least as far as I recall seeing with other anime/manga and it probably improves the chances on average.

Ive watched everything by Akiyuki Shinbo because the man is a genius unlike anything we have ever seen before..... other then Madoka. I don't know why. Does this make me an awful person?

This is true enough. FMA is fantastic on so many levels. I just wanted to point out thats its due Hiromu Arakawa being brilliant and not due her being a woman.
Oh yeah, a really good writer's going to do a great job regardless of their gender, and admittedly it's really more a general rule of thumb that the more experience and understanding you have with whatever the better you'll write about it.
Are you talking about younger characters too? Because a lot of mahou shoujo has strong younger characters that arent sexualized.

Yep, Arakawa wins at everything. Mikage in Silver Spoon is the perfect female character. Sure, she winds up romantically interested in the protagonist, but that's mainly because Hachiken is the exact opposite of the spineless male lead depicted in the above comic. How do you not fall for Hachiken? The real mystery of Silver Spoon is how Hachiken didn't end up with an entire harem. Fuck yeah Hachiken.

Sturgeon's Law plus Japanese issues with sexism mean that you likely won't be tripping all over "strong female characters" in Japanese media but I don't think they are that hard to find if you exert just a small bit of effort (I assume we are specifically talking female characters that have some degree of sex appeal and that inhabit universes where there are male characters worth a damn).
Though then what constitutes a "strong female character" and appropriate and inappropriate degrees of sexualization is never clear and often lead these sorts of discussions into every party just shouting "I disagree" to each other :/
Plus if you try to do a comparative study between mediums and national cultures you run into more issue with quantification and definition :/
We all knew this as soon as it became apparent that this is the true yuri show of the season.

He doesn't just put characters into "All hope lost" situations. He takes their idealistic views on life and crushes them.

One of the many reasons I love Xam'd despite its incoherent plotting and occasional nonsensical dialogue is that all of its principal characters are well-conceived and interesting.
I'm more of a Haru fan than Nakiami but that's purely personal preference - I think both are excellent characters.

I'll wait to watch with the episode, but it's a shame the season isn't delivering on that. Especially since I'm currently watching JoJo and Zvezda and I think they're both amazing, can't wait for JoJo's second OP when Battle Tendency goes up on Crunchyroll.
What a nice surprise was Zvezda, btw, I think it'll end up on my top 3 winter, along with Mikakunin and Sakura Trick.
