Did anyone post the latest round of Discotek release goodness? Here they are:
The only thing I'd be interested in picking up is maybe Sherlock Hound, but I wouldn't be averse to grabbing the Fatal Fury releases on a sale.

I'm more or less up to date on the officially-translated Vampire Hunter D novels. I also read the fan translation of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya before I watched the movie.

No Game No Life Episode 1
They did this LN great. Sora's glances and expressions being intensely fierce at times is perfect and better than I even imagined him. If they can make the games this intense as we go on it may definitely be second best LN anime this season.

Might pickup Horus & Sherlock Hound unless there's any JP BD releases of those lurking around the corner.
I've liked them myself. Much more worldbuilding and such than I expect from a harem story and a protagonist whose not bland and non active.
I can't say I want the thread to be dead and abandoned.

I just couldn't take the writing seriously. Then again I shouldn't have expected much given it's fan translations and the style of the book.

In my experience they're worse in prose form, especially read through awkward, low quality fan translations.
For me they tend to be better, even with the translation caveat. But that might be because I'm only reading ones where I really liked the anime already and so want more details, more of everything really and anime is rush rush rush to fit many books into 12 20 minute episodes.

I think the real test would be to have someone read the Hyouka novels and tell us if they're any good.
Zvezda keeps surprising me, really good action scenes this episode, with some nice Oyaji action and backstory, Plamya fighting for her post as best girl while Natasha gives her space to do so.

There's not really a lot to say about it, it's just a fun show that gives everyone in the cast their time to shine, and all the characters are really fun, lovely OP, great visuals, definitely on my top 3 for Winter, perhaps top 2, but I need to see it to the end to judge.
I'm expecting great things though, judging from the very start of episode 1. How the hell will they get there?

I read a bit of the first novel translated; it was OK but not nearly as interesting as KyoAni's adaptation.

Next up on my backlog. My first impression of this is that I can see Natsuiro Kiseki in its veins, but all the drama going on in the background gives is that AnoHana flavor too. It's the kind of story Japan and the world loves to tell about strange, supernatural events in the peak of summer. The way the show portrays Karada's sudden realization of the adult world is well done, and Shoko's pretty cute, especially once she gets the new glasses and ribbons that I saw in the promo art. There's an underlying melancholy to the whole thing, yet the strange romance fiction (not the love kind of romance, the other kind) to it gives it a certain levity. I like the town everything is set in. OP and ED are both peaceful, and I can appreciate the many moments of silence the show offers.
With the way episode 3 ended, the tone of the show may change, but I like what I see so far. Stories like this have always had a certain appeal.

Read the first volume of Mahouka and the first volume of Hyouka. Both were enjoyable.
Oh and also the first volume of Danganronpa Zero of course.
Yeah, sometimes adaptations actually do improve upon the original work.
Hajime no Ippo and K-ON! are other examples of the adaptation being better.
Not all of books 1-4 have been fan translated, but my understanding is that the anime is books 1-4, with 5 unused.

Your unusual convention of watching the show in chronological order but listing the episode numbers by broadcast order is really bugging me for some reason.
Enjoying the impressions though.
Hitsugi no Chaika 1
This feels like a pretty fun B-tier anime. The world is kind of interesting, with the holy relics and the battle mode incantations and the gun-fuelled magic and the surprisingly vicious unicorns. The heroine's broken Japanese and innocent yet frank and determined attitude is remarkably charming. And in general, it just seems like a fun little adventure so far.
The MC's cross-hair is kind of weird, though. Not Baby Steps protagonist weird, but it definitely catches the eye. I guess it's deliberately that way, though, since it fits in with his face markings in battle mode. So it makes more sense than Baby Steps guy's hair as well. Because seriously, what is up with that?

Oh yeah, I really enjoyed reading it. It captured the whole mood pretty well especially Orekei's resistance to everything.
Of course it doesn't have the splendor of KyoAni but it really showed how strong the base material is.

I saw your comment after this about anime's serialized nature but wouldn't this be true for a lot of entertainment mediums? Video games can have a lot of time investment as well for example, so naturally you hope the game doesn't turn bad in its final or later act.

I only read vol.1 which covers the Hyouka arc, so too early for your favorite character to appear!
I also don't think translations are even up to that point yet.
