Wkd BO 01•20-22•17 - Rogue One billion WW, McAvoy top bald guy @ BO over Diesel

If the finale hook doesn't work for Resident Evil, Split will likely be #1 next weekend. And the weekend after as well, unless there's a sudden wave of nostalgia for the Ring.

Silence is dying out there.

Scorsese has always had a weird relationship with mainstream audiences. Since his films tend to have pretty steep price tags, even his bigger hits tend to be just barely profitable.

I'm glad he was able to get the film made, but it's one of the least commercial things out there as we speak.

The only success Vin Diesel can get outside of the Fast and Furious franchise is doing a sequel to The Pacifier.

Kundun didn't light the box-office on fire, either.

Nor did The Last Temptation of Christ, which is surprising given the nuclear heat the film was drawing from its depiction of Jesus.

Sadly, a lot of religious film successes tend to come in one variety, and they are decidedly not of the nuanced or measured kind.

sad for silence which is a masterpiece

you can understand why though, it's not a film you can easily explain the appeal of to another person. it's also a brutal watch without presenting any clear cut answers from that brutality. hard to build buzz around that.

XXX is looking at a $70 million opening weekend with an $85 million production budget. If it keeps going strong overseas, it'll be fine.

That's back to back solid successes for M.Night. Happy to see him making a comeback. Even though he has made some awful movies he's still very talented. I haven't seen The Visit or Split yet but they look like him controlling himself a bit more and not trying to take his stuff too over the top.

Yep, exactly. A tough subject, not a super mainstream film, running time probably scares some away, and as you said, it can be very brutal.

But it is a fantastic movie. It went from two showtimes to only one showtime in my area, and I was the only one there on Friday night, so outside of movie lovers and Scorsese fans, I don't see it drawing much more people until home release in its various forms. It won't make back its ~$40 million budget, unfortunately.

Scorsese has The Irishman up next, right? That should do well, given the cast and the subject matter being decidedly more friendly to the average moviegoer.

Disney should buy Illumination (if they could): Smaller budgets, bigger box office.

Looking forward to Despicable Me 3.

oh hey, Assassin's Creed got it's budget back. With that done, what was the biggest (mainstream known) bomb of 2016?

And for the sake of fairness, let's exclude Jane Got A Gun, Rules Don't Apply and A Monster Calls from that since we're talking movies people actually know exist. I also just learned a movie called Race exists. :\

Not the biggest, but Ratchet and Clank did miserably at the box office.

You bet, shoots in a couple of weeks if I'm remembering correctly!

Edit: Just checked, last check-in article is February or early March. But Pesci keeps holding out, while Scorsese states he can get him back in.

I wonder if M. Night will do a movie similar to Signs. I always liked that movie, even if the ending fell flat on it's face.

I was busy today, so I missed the usual box office run.

XXX's overseas opening was pretty good. There's a chance the film has a solid Chinese run next month (its currently scheduled Chinese release date is Feb 10th)

Arrival opened to $7M this weekend in China. General audiences didn't care for the film.

Other Chinese Updates:

Passengers - $35M (after 2 weeks)
Rogue One - $62M (held pretty well in wkd #3)
The Great Wall - $167M
Kubo in the Two Strings - $5M (no one cares)
Hacksaw Ridge - $60M

Jesus the Great Wall is doing that good? I just saw a commercial of it and never heard of it until today.

edit: it's foreign total is over 200M. WOW!

i haven't seen split yet but that's my favorite movie from him. love how he cast mel gibson and joaquin phoenix in there. not fond of the ending (while sixth sense and unbreakable had far better ones) but overall i like that one quite a bit, good acting in that as well.

It was a $150M film, so I'm not sure it will justify its price tag, but the WW total should at least break $300M when the US and remaining overseas territories launch.

Wanda group denies it, but it's rumored that Thomas Tull's handling of The Great Wall and Kong helped lead to his resignation from Legendary Pictures.

Good for Split. I think the film's concept really intrigued people, plus Shyamalan actually making a fairly decent movie again. Haven't really seen the film though, so I can't comment on the quality myself.

Nice to see a thriller at #1, especially one that really has one star (that's not a major one at that) and pretty low-budget.

Not surprised on the XXX underperforming. Nobody gives a shit about that franchise and Diesel isn't as big of an opener as people think. That's a major dropoff between #1 and #2 this weekend.

Box office stars are largely dead nowadays, so XXX: Return of Xander Cage not opening with very good business is not that surprising. Not to mention the film seemed like a throwback to an era of action films that people wanna forget, that being 2002 of course.

Passengers has made more than Arrival worldwide.

The Great Wall has made more than $200M WW already.

Wut

Passengers has more "well-known stars". Not to mention it's much more of a bigger budgeted film than Arrival, so it'll probably lose money already.

Most of the Great Wall's cash has also come from China.

Same with me, I even like it more than 6th Sense and Unbreakable. It is one of the few movies that I got tense while watching it. I've seen the ending to Split several times but from what I saw, it looks really good.

I want to see Split, but might wait for redbox. That means I need to somehow not be spoiled for like 3 months.
Some mother f'r on the MST3K fb page of all things posted one in what seemed like a generic post. I was furious as I had managed to avoid trailers and any other info. Now I have to wait for a time when the information isn't sitting at the front of my mind.

Touchy subject matter that's a little intimidating for a general audience.

Nah. I just don't think it's even a case of it being touchy, but rather a case of the subject matter and commercials not having a lot of immediate draw to them. It's not a story that has an immediately infectious appeal for many. I'm mostly only hearing about the film from people who are seriously into film or into Scorsese.

I mean, I'm excited to watch Jim Jarmusch's latest, but I'm also not surprised to hear that a film about Adam Driver playing a bus driver who writes poetry isn't being talked about outside of film critic circles.

Kid's films have been bulletproof.

Unless you're Laika.

Arrival had a pretty terrible overseas run. America saved the day on that film.

It is absolutely disgusting that Sing is outgrossing Moana here.

yeah Moana is my favorite disney cartoon since the 90s and I was hoping for it to become a frozen-like phenomenon. the songs were catchy enough to do it.

Sing really cut its legs tho.

The holidays were a huge boost for Sing, just like they were with the first two Alvin flicks (and the third to a lesser extent). I've always felt it was a missed opportunity Disney never released a Pixar film in December, and it's unlikely to ever happen now.

Rogue one makes a billion. Deserved? Not really but I'm glad it did because I liked it. Star Wars is such a monster IP.

I'm curious to see how this December goes. Six wide release films are scheduled the week after Star Wars Ep8

• Downsizing (Par.) - 12/22
• Jumanji (2017) (Sony) - 12/22
• Pitch Perfect 3 (Uni.) - 12/22
• The Six Billion Dollar Man (W/Dim.) - 12/22
• The Story of Ferdinand (Fox/Blue Sky) - 12/22
• Untitled PG-13 Comedy (WB) - 12/22

Honestly I think Frozen just ended up bigger because it has a much catchier song than Moana, and Frozen was much better advertised as well.

Also, come on. It's a movie about singing animals. That shit was always going to sell big unless it's absolutely terrible. I saw both and while I think Moana was the movie with the deeper message and better production values. Sing was ultimately more 'entertaining' for
Vin needs to realize that the Fast and Furious is the Rock's franchise. Vin has pretty limited box office draw, and the Rock pretty much steals all of Vin's appeal, and actually does it better.

If not for the Rock, F&F would have stopped after 5.

This is only true to some extent. F&F is fast cars and ridiculous stunts franchise. That's why people keep going to see it. Having the Rock is just a bonus on top.
