Wkd BO 09•01-03•17 - Labor Day WEAKend box office has nothing as Bodyguard 3peats

15 seems high to me (even though I threw the number out) but I'm starting to think that with this release being this wide, and pre-sales apparently shocking the shit out of fandango and movietickets, that a double digit Thursday number is moving away from possible and into probable territory.

Female ass or male ass? This is important.

0.5 second shot of Olsen's character in underwear; the camera glimpses it and pans up. And the only reason we see it is because another woman is making fun of her for them.

Description of scene:
Olsen is changing into long underwear and she's warned by the woman loaning them to her that they'll pull her underwear into her ass. Then she see's what Olsen is wear and and says, "I guess they're there already."
It's a small moment of levity in a pretty serious section (of a very serious film.)

Didn't hear the joke part. That makes it make sense a little more. Just felt like the entire scene before that was about how she wasn't dressed for the environment, so that extra little bit didn't really feel necessary.

Didn't really detract from the movie, it was just something that stuck out to me.

I thought it stood out too, though I concluded it was fine since it was justified on a couple fronts narratively.
Olsen is finding that the people on the reservation are so mistrustful of federal law enforcement they don't even trust her to return the long underwear she's being loaned - which she's having to borrow because she's so far out of her element.
In a movie where everyone is covered head to toe at all times it stood out, though.

  • After months of hype, record breaking trailer views, and another five star marketing campaign from WB, IT arrives and looks set to destroy a multitude of records this weekend. Opening in 4,103 theaters (a record for an R-rated release), it seems to be a near guarantee that the Stephen King adaptation sets a new bar for horror films and an opening in the September-October frame. Also in sights, though a much more difficult record to break, is the record for highest preview number for an R-rated film. Currently Deadpool holds that with $12.7M, and if IT can pass that number, a nine digit opening is in the cards.
  • A lot has been made about the precedent of September openings and horror films in general while discussing the potential of IT. The current September OW record is only $48M, but history has never stopped records from being shattered; American Sniper, Deadpool, The Force Awakens, etc have proven that the time of year does not matter. The right film can have a blockbuster opening during any time of year. Presales for IT have been off the charts, far outpacing any comparisons in the genre and currently accounting for 82% of all sales on movietickets.com.
  • One particular example I want to bring up is 2001's Hannibal. That film shares a number of parallels with IT, and it opened to a massive $58M in February, which now adjusts to $91.1M.

I think not only will this film continue to fuck up the notion that films need to drop in specific "seasons" to be breakout successful, but it'll also really start to fuck up the notion that MPAA ratings really mean much in terms of success.

I think a lot of the repeat views of this film are going to be kids.

The notion of ratings as a restriction is pretty much dead as it is thanks to streaming/internet. Nobody cares what anything is rated when the ratings have nothing to do with whether or not you push play at home.

If IT has a triple digit opening weekend, not only does it not matter when you release your film, but the notion you need to cut the crusts off to get mainstream success is also bullshit.

yes, but it'll take like 10 or 12 more ITs before studio execs are finally willing to take that "risk"

It's "It" bro.

Say no more. Many children have had or are having the thrill of either reading or seeing It (miniseries). Or both. It is awesome.

forreal i watched the first IT trailer and liked it so much i read the book

and i hated the book enough that i'm no longer going to see IT in theaters despite being able to use moviepass on it

I hope IT clears $100M this weekend.

1) A $100M OW film in September would be pretty amazing.
2) It would make handing out the prizes for the IT contest extremely easy if all of you undershot.

Where is this IT hype coming from

Well, just last year we had that clown panic which was something almost out of the Salem witch days. Local news stations all over the country would do lead stories about clown sightings.

I think there is something in IT that hits the current zeitgeist. Personally I didn't think the book was that great
Especially the Piers Anthony-ish bit about the one girl in the group having sex with all the boys just because, and then her later getting into all those abusive relationships
but I liked the mni-series..

Only one of us had a serious prediction north of 100, right?

Busty broke 90.

I was a wuss.

1. The book, which is always a recommended read for people who want to get into King.
2. A TV miniseries that, despite being bad, raised an entire generation to be afraid of clowns.
3. A recent resurgence of horror movies actually trying to be good.

I don't think I'm wrong in saying IT is an American classic story. At the very least Pennywise is up their with other classic horror monsters.

Ya, B-G-E had the same number that he broke down above more or less.

AdventureRacing was $95M.

The very large bulk of predictions were $65-85M.

Which, to be fair, was still above tracking last week.

god that just reminded me of how @onlxn was able to work those clown sightings into his huge election 2016 twitter story

and how when trump won he refused to finish it saying he never expected that to happen and couldn't bring himself to finish his satire

and oh my god yes that book isn't great and that spoiled part is especially fucked up.

IT also has a certain Steven King vibe in the current pop culture going for it. Stranger Things was huge in part for evoking that. Add to that that IT is fondly remembered and one of King's better-known books rather than a new lesser-known thing, it adds up to antipation that you usually don't get for horror.

I finally read IT myself a few years ago, and it's pretty great. Makes for a great movie concept, especially the first half (which is what we're getting).

yeah, but I was beating the drum on this movie breaking the fuck out way back.

Came time to pull the trigger? I just couldn't do it.

weak.

I know I've heard its not a very good movie but I'm happy to see Ryan Reynolds get a decent success that isn't Deadpool under him. Always liked the guy and Hitman's Bodyguard has already done $100 mil off of a $30 mil budget. Pretty respectable performance

It's great that it's headed for a monster opening weekend, and success.

Slightly increases the chances of a Salem's Lot film, I want it! I do really like the miniseries from back in the day but it's time for a new adaptation.

David Soul or Rob Lowe miniseries?

I never watched the Rob Lowe one, but the classic one scared the shit out of me as a kid. Hell, images of Barlow still freak me out. It's the eyes.

The knocking on the window.... still creepy.

It was the first Stephen King book I read so I've always had a soft spot, well that and it's a great read.
