Box Office: ‘Conjuring’ Buries Competition, Including Newest Bomb ‘R.I.P.D.’ Warner-New Line scarer overperforms with $41 mil; U's big-budget misfire flops with just $12.8 mil

The summer’s lengthy list of box office misfires welcomed a new film to its ranks this weekend — Universal’s “R.I.P.D.,” which cost $130 million to produce and opened with a dismal $12.8 million domestically. Though on the hits side, Warner Bros.-New Line’s low-budget scarer, “The Conjuring,” overperformed with a stellar estimated $41.5 million through Sunday.

“The Conjuring,” which was made for just $20 million, was the brightest spot during a weekend of mostly underperformers. Fox’s second DreamWorks Animation release, “Turbo,” got off to a disappointing start, earning just $21.5 million in three days, with $31.2 million in five. The toon marks one of the lowest three-day openings for a recent DWA CGI-animated film.

Also, Lionsgate-Summit’s “Red 2″ succumbed to the weight of an overcrowded frame, earning just $18.5 million, roughly $3 million less than its predecessor’s debut weekend.

Overcrowding was a particular cause for complaint by observers this weekend, especially given the prominence of strong holdovers in the market place, including U’s “Despicable Me 2,” which fell just 43% in its third frame, for a three-day estimate of $25.1 million. “Despicable Me” crossed the $275 million domestic mark.

At the specialty box office, the Weinstein Co. had a successful expansion of last week’s per-screen champ, “Fruitvale Station,” which in its second outing grossed more than $742,000 from just 34 locations. Pic averaged $21,832 per screen.

And touting a less traditional release, Weinstein’s video-on-demand distribution arm Radius bowed Ryan Gosling indie “Only God Forgives” to strong early results. The film is on track to besting previous VOD champ “Arbitrage,” according to Radius, based on the film’s record-setting pace climbing the iTunes chart.

“Only God Forgives” also bowed theatrically this weekend at 78 locations, estimating north of $315,000 for an average of just $4,038 per screen.

You'll have to excuse me. I'm pretty drunk. I just came back from the funeral for Ryan Reynold's film career.

It was a beautiful service though and a free bar. They are burying Ryan's career next to Taylor Lautner's.

It would have wanted it that way.

Was Taylor's even alive?

RIPD flopped even more spectacularly than I was expecting. It's downright impressive.

Should have been a tv show.

Amazing hold for Grown Ups 2. I thought people might have moved on from Sandler after Jack and Jill and That's My Boy flopped.

Whoever greenlit R.I.P.D. needs to be panhandling on a 405 exit ramp.

Instead, they will certainly get a huge promotion.

the sad thing is this won't affect his career, in the least. Hollywood/studios have it in their minds that Ryan Reynolds is 'leading man' material (because he's been in a few hits opposite bo draws like Washington and Bullock) , and he's really not. But alas, they will continue to PUSH him, HARD... until SOMETHING inexplicably sticks and they'll feel justified/vindicated looking back at all the craters left in his wake.

Taylor Lautner? He never even had a chance. LOL

So RIPD is THE bomba of the summer?

Perhaps even the biggest bomb of the last few years.

I can't think of anything that's shat the bed so badly off the top of my head. Baring in mind that RIPD won't get much of push internationally so it's WW take could be well under $100m.

Anyone?

Why did RIPD cost $130 million to make? Who green-lit this project for that budget?

The creative minds that brought you Battleship.

How many bombs is one man allowed?

When will we get the Parcheesi film adaptation that we all deserve?

Mars Needs Moms.

On the bright side. RIPD opened to $6.4M in Russia, which was higher than Man of Steel's debut in that region.

Reynolds keeps getting cast because he's charismatic, and pretty, and people respond to his name positively, more often than not. Also, he's never really been asked to sell a movie ON HIS OWN. Green Lantern wasn't a Ryan Reynolds movie. RIPD wasn't a Ryan Reynolds movie. When the movies flame out, they're not seen as flaming out BECAUSE of Ryan Reynolds.

And in most cases, they're NOT failing because of Ryan Reynolds. So he keeps getting jobs.

Jeff Bridges always seemed to be trying to be Tommy Lee Jones too hard in the commercials/previews. Came off as corny.

At least the international numbers are starting to perk it up. :s

I don't think they'll be enough to salvage a sequel, but PR should at least avoid the status of a total disaster. But that's not saying a lot.

Yeah. The entire movie was trying to hard to be Men in Black, with ghosts. That was probably the elevator pitch.

While his career isn't dead per se he's done as far as film is concerned. I can see him doing a premium cable show like a Ray Donovan or Californication type of show in a year or two though.

Between RIPD, The Change Up and Green Lantern he just hasn't taken off at all. Safe House was a hit but that was Denzel all day long. Universal mooted a Reynolds centric sequel to Safe House but I think that's probably off the table after this weekend.

Taylor Lautner? He never even had a chance. LOL

Pretty much. As soon as the premiere for the last Twilight film finished his career was taken out back behind the coal shed and shot.
