Link? as I still only see PR at 53 million on that site for foreign.

I don't post fake numbers. If I post something, it's from Boxoffice.com, ERC, or Rentrak. Mojo will update their totals eventually, but they will be within $100k or so (depending on rounding) of what I have above.

Reynolds keeps getting cast because he's charismatic, and pretty, and people respond to his name positively, more often than not. Also, he's never really been asked to sell a movie ON HIS OWN. Green Lantern wasn't a Ryan Reynolds movie. RIPD wasn't a Ryan Reynolds movie. When the movies flame out, they're not seen as flaming out BECAUSE of Ryan Reynolds.

And in most cases, they're NOT failing because of Ryan Reynolds. So he keeps getting jobs.

Outside of women liking to see him on the cover of Peoples magazine, I don't really get the feeling that people respond to him positively in film. Does not mean they respond negatively either but his name seems to not matter.

Flops, flops everywhere. Except The Conjuring. Imagine if it held well like Insidious. I mean, it won't, but imagine if it did.

I'm going to be honest and be one of the few that is shocked that R.I.P.D. did better than I expected. I expected sub-million levels of money. So $12 mill is a surprise for me.

Who the hell wanted to see something like that?

Makes me sad PR didn't get to soar this summer.

Pacific Rim is probably heading towards $350-400M worldwide. It will need to explode in either Japan or China (or both) to go higher than that.

On the bright side, it should end up the highest grossing film out of the summer bombs (After Earth, White House Down, The Lone Ranger, and RIPD) both domestically and worldwide.

Ryan Reynolds is like the generic leading character is your typical bro shooters. Cast him as your leading man at your own peril.

On the other hand, Brad Pitt is still a winner.

GAF's hopes completely extinguished. :'(

Domestically it looks like it will crawl to 100 million. Overseas will be key, China and Japan are huge possibilities. Transformer Dark of the Moon did like a 145 million and IM3 did 120 million in China alone.

PR won't be doing those numbers in China but it has the potential to do a good chunk of business.

Do you know why the Japan and China release date was so far behind?

I really need to see this movie.
People keep saying it's one of the best horror movies out there but I have yet to see it.
I thought The Conjuring looked interesting the first time I saw the trailer so I'm excited.

Sad to see Pacific Rim's domestic numbers. However, domestic sales aren't as big a game changer as they used to be. It's almost made $200 worldwide so far, and it hasn't even been released in China and Japan yet. It'll make it's money.

Watch the first 70 minutes then just turn it off. You'll be better off for it.

This guy need to fire his agent immediately. Anyone could smell that The Green Lantern and RIPD were stinking turds from a hundred miles away. One or two big upfront paydays are not worth sabotaging your whole career.

Yeah I dont think so either, just pointing out the possibility of business, even if it does half that its a huge chunk of money. I think Japan will be crucial, if it takes off it could make very large amount of money. You just never know, I expected better numbers in the US and it has done the exact opposite lol.

Studios don't get the same % of the gross OS as they do on domestic grosses. If it ends up at 350-400 (250-300 being OS) on a 180-200 budget, that is not great. Marketing also has to be included in that.

That's almost literally impossible in 2800 theaters. Less than a million would mean something like ten people in each *theater* per day. It would have to play to statistically empty screens for the entire weekend.

Of course it won't be great but at least they can recoup their money and not be afraid of making a movie like Pacific rim. I think the Blu Ray/DVD sales gonna help it make some profit at least... I hope.

Everybody holding out hope that Japan will save PR doesn't know a thing about Japanese box office history.
Not to mention that the entire island apparently hates Rinko Kikuchi for getting nude on film and achieving her fame outside the domestic channels.

I think that $40M is a safe bet, and $50-60M could happen if audiences like the film. The potential to go higher is there obviously, but you'd probably be setting yourself up for disappointment. All 3 transformers flicks were record breakers at the time of their release in China, so that was a poor example to use. Sort of like using Avatar's gross to gauge a new sci fi/fantasy film.

Do you know why the Japan and China release date was so far behind?

Japan prefers their movies dubbed. Japan also has a strong local film industry. For example, a new Miyazaki film (the director of Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away) opened this weekend. Miyazaki is like the James Cameron of Japan, so opening a flick around the same time as one of his movies is a bad idea, even if the US opening is that weekend.

China strictly regulates foreign films. Hollywood studios get a finite number of release slots per year, and the Chinese government decides when the films are released. They block off quite a bit of the year for local releases only, which is why we get situations like last year where The Dark Knight Rises and Amazing Spider-Man opened on the same day in China.

It's not like Pacific Rim will get a sequel anymore so does it really matter at this point? Just embrace its cult status.

I honestly don't care if it gets a sequel, it's great as a stand alone film. I just want it to be a financial success for Guillermo and the studio so we see more risk taken on films. I've just about had my fill of sequels, reboots and super hero flicks.

What is precluding it from doing moderately well (say $40-50M)?

The highest grossing Godzilla film in the last 25 years was Godzilla vs Mothra, and it only made $20 million. The most recent film Godzilla Final Wars only made $12 million. The genre hasn't been a major box office draw in decades. King Kong vs Godzilla is still the genre's high water mark and that was 50 years ago.

Hmm, I had no idea of this, very informative. No wonder Toho's SFX looked like they did.

I hate this about myself, but knowing that PR is not doing that well makes me want to go see it. I had no intentions to do so before that (the trailer did nothing for me tbh).

Wait, what? If you don't want to see it, don't see it. Your $12 is not going to make a difference.

It's a business, not a charity.
