I'm kidding Bobby you know that 😃

Domestic, yup no doubt about it and with the updated numbers, beating Titanic's ww gross may be in play.

like I said, WW Titanic and DOM Avatar are pretty much the same game at this point. If it beats one, there's a very strong likelihood it will beat the other.

Biggest global opening of all time and it hasn't even opened in China. Mother of god.

Calling it now-when the final box office receipts come in, TFA will have surpassed James Cameron's Avatar as the highest grossing film of all time. And if it doesn't, it will have come ridiculously close (I'm expecting the B.O. gross of no less than $2 billion).

Screencap this post for justice in the future.

I'm SO HAPPY Star Wars beat that TRASH Jurassic World into the ground. :)
LMAO I remember the prattoons trying to tell me that JW would hold the record and that Chris Pratt was the reason it did reasonably well

Episode VII was so good. Like only Empire Strikes back and Revenge of the Sith are higher in the SW rankings imo. Episode VII deserves that top spot more than Avatar tbh.

Jurassic World is the worst film of 2015. Garbage plot, piss poor acting, horrendous CG, lame music, poor casting decisions, bad reviews. I'm SO GLAD that people are starting to vote with their wallets for QUALITY once again. Poor JW, it's over for the dinos.

Up next to battle Star Wars for that record is the soon to be critically acclaimed Captain America: Civil War.

Good lord, is this sarcasm or just insane amounts of salt? I can't be sure.

Yeah, though the real headcratcher for me is the China gross; hence why I'm a little apprensive to state that it will definitely outgross Titanic's WW.

The market there is just too hard to predict.

Titanic is over 2 billion. I don't see this reaching that.

It may be in play, but like you mention, we'll see when the weekday results start to come in and we'll be able to better grasp the reality of the 2 billion target or not.

I mean, FWIW it hit $289M international without China, which for JW was $99M. If it hits $800M in the US, it would only need $1.3M from international to get to Titanic.

edit - "only" in this context specifically relates to movies of this caliber. Obviously I know $1.3M international is near impossible for basically every movie out there outside of the few in our lifetime that have made it that far.

lol. Honestly Episode VII was okay. Not "so good" and I'm a huge Star Wars fan. Of course that's just my opinion but the marketing machine has certainly done its job here.

ehhhhh

It was pretty damn good. The marketing machine tried it's best back in 1999 but that didn't stop most Star Wars fans from completely shitting on the phantom menace and all the subsequent sequels.

Star Wars vs Jurassic World vs Captain America. A saddening landscape.

But dude, people voted with their wallets. And Disney listened and made Trevorrow a Star Wars director.

Someone might have to revise the thread title.
Final numbers are still being tallied, but in an interview with Bloomberg on Monday morning, Disney chief Bob Iger suggested that receipts for the “Star Wars” sequel had come in higher than initial estimates had suggested. It now appears that the film will have hit a global record of $528 million. Disney originally suggested the film’s global tally would be $517 million, but domestic numbers are higher than anticipated, clocking in at roughly $247 million.

Star Wars is king.

They all did well, though. There wasn't a drop off like with say, Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions.

I think after this week we probably will have a better idea of that.
Indeed. I think the tiny Sunday drop is an early indication that it will have legs, though. With school out I can see it being very strong all week, at the least.

It would be closer to $1.4b to beat Titanic off of $800m domestic.

It's crazy, seems like everyone I know on FB has seen it more than once. Some have seen it 5 times already. I'm still fine with one viewing but holy crap the fans are buying it up

I've watched it twice. I think I'm good with that. This isn't a film that's going to peel away its layers and reveal more of itself with multiple viewings. If anything, the 2nd screening just made me appreciate the opening 30 or so minutes more and made the flaws throughout the rest of the film all the more glaring.

Also, I'm glad to see we finally wound up with a resolution to the box office battle I've been clamoring for since September 2009...

We're all consumed in the Star Wars hype that many forgot of The Good Dinosaur, the Pixar movie that may finish it's theatrical run with less than $300 million ww.

A Bugs Life vindicated! 😃

Saw it twice this weekend, and going next weekend to see it a third time. The film is really good. And as someone who didn't really catch Jurrasic World fever, I'm pleased that Star Wars shattered its records.

I know it's an incredibly small sample size, but this is the first film in YEARS that I can remember that my friends (mid-30s for the most part) and I will almost all see multiple times in theaters.

It should have historic legs for an opening of this size.

Makes me sad for episode 9, it will be focus grouped to death and subpar mediocrity at best. I enjoyed watching Jurassic World once but never want to see it again, poor acting, bad script, mediocre direction at best. While TFA was a very safe movie, it's a far better film than JW in pretty much all aspects.

I'll probably see it a second time with family but I don't see myself running out and seeing it 5+ times like some people are doing. The film isn't that good outside of the first 30 minutes (which is the part I really want to see again).

The last film I saw in theaters more than once was Titanic's re-release back in 2012 and that was only twice.

Well hopefully we won't have the bolded to worry about with episode 9 even with Trevorrow in the director's chair.

While I probably liked Jurassic World more than most on GAF, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried that he'll be doing a Star Wars film, let alone the closing chapter on the sequel trilogy that has had such a promising start.

The only good parts of Jurassic World were the island itself, the Ian Malcolm fanboy, the scene where they discover the original park and the OG dinosaurs. Every part with the humans was pretty bad... so yeah, plenty reason to be worried.

I tend to agree. I love watching movies multiple times in theaters. I saw GOTG 3 times, Gravity 4 times, Creed 2 times, etc. I don't have much interest in this one except at a cheap ticket.

The film definitely had an awesome 30 minute start. I loved all of that. The second they start going towards the main plot is when everything takes a nosedive.

Yeah Trevorrow has be worried about Ep 9, especially since he'll be following up Johnson.

Lets be honest here in terms of framing, pacing and editing the Force Awakens isn't exactly anything more than mediocre. Abrams did do a cracking job with most of the actors though, but would a couple of establishing shots kill him? Especially during the action sequences. Being kind I'd also say there's a fair bit left on the cutting room floor to get it to the required running time. On a second viewing that shows a lot more.

$248-250M will probably stand for a few years. I don't see the next Avengers or Jurassic film hitting those numbers.

Maybe Episode IX. Maybe the second half of Infinity War if they use that to say goodbye to some of the more popular characters/actors.

That said, The opening weekend record is typically not a long lived record. Nothing has kept it for even 5 years since Jaws in 1975.

The worldwide opening will probably be broken first.
