eh, maybe SW VIII or IX. My money's on IX. Even though I have more faith in VIII being good.

VIII will have 40 year anniversary + Luke Skywalker but I am not so sure about it
TFA was very hyped, it was insane ... not sure VIII can repeat it
It will top 200M OW surely but higher than that...

The more times the add to those Thursday previews, the easier it's going to be.

nah, I don't think this is right. The thursday preview was always historically midnight (or technical 00:01). This was then moved to ~19:00 local time to get better turn out. But it was still a preview. Star Wars did bump this... because the 19:00 shows just got obliterated in attendance.. but really.. outside of star wars, where do people really see 19:00 shows being obliterated to the point of getting away with 22:00, 01:00, 04:00, etc. showings then being added.

of course they could also just get stupid about it. but right now I'm going to say that the preview number, friday number and opening day number will probably stand for a while. well, at least to episode VIII. I do think Ep VIII will likely break this one's due to both the goodwill and being the actual 40th anniversary.

This 248M OW record .... Nothing will beat this for a very long long time...

I couldn't see any movies stronger

Batman v superman is the only one that can do it for the next few years. It's the only movie with such major characters that everyone will want to see it.

I feel like the most recent trailer for BvS kind of put a kabosh on some of that hype.

We'll have a new record within 5 years.

Five Years ago, the opening weekend record was $158M.

Who are the pretenders ?
- Star Wars Episode VIII or IX
- Avengers 3.1 or 3.2
- Justice League Part 1 or 2
- Avatar 2
- Jurassic World 2

GotG2/Batman v Superman/Civil War/Spiderman/Pirates5/Toy Story 4/The Incredibles 2/Alien are all out

I just could see Episode VIII or IX but the hype for Star Wars TFA was huge, no other movie could have it (for me)

Don't second films in trilogies usually make the most money?

In cases where the first film needs home viewing to grow a bit (Dark Knight, Austin Powers, Hunger Games, etc), yes.

In cases where the first film pretty much hits saturation right out of the gate (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future), then no.

It would almost have to be a vector that we aren't aware of. 5 Years ago the Star Wars films were dormant and Jurassic was pretty much in perpetual development hell.

But with pretty much every major IP now reinvigorated it's hard to speculate what could really come out of nowhere.

They're going to get stupid about it. It essentially adds an extra release night of screenings, which sill do gangbusters for any hyped property. Not as well as Star Wars, but you get the idea.

Very nice but it used to be all time domestic growth. Cameron better get some artists ready.
Because these jobs are trying to turn domestic opening weekends into a big thing?

It used to only ever be all-time world wide. Now these studios are trying to lower bars for themselves to clear since the only bar that matters isn't readily reachable.

How long until they start doing these congratulations mock ups for all time best Second Monday in Korea?

Either your film made the most money of any film or you're trying to contextualise your successes to fit a narrative.

Eh, I dunno. I think it'll struggle to break too far past 200M OW, if that, but that's just me.

Superhero movies are extremely reliable draws but they're not especially explosive. The only other movies to break the 200M OW barrier are Avengers and Jurassic World, and Age Of Ultron is the only other one to get get anywhere close. Maybe BvS or Civil War can get there but I don't think they'll get within spitting distance of TFA.

No, the little picture congratulating people on record hand off was focused on domestic numbers, not world wide.

So if Star Wars does indeed take the domestic crown from Avatar it would be fitting for Cameron to do something since Lucas did it when Titantic beat Star Wars.

May 2007 had three $300m films launch. Probably about the same as three 400m+ films in current premium format heavy box office .

not a chance in hell. First weekend of May is FCBD and Marvel has owned the premiere date for 13 years (will be 15 years by that point). Likewise, the Ep VIII date will have Thursday previews on the literal 40th anniversary of Star Wars.

Disney will just live with/love the GOTG2 money for those 3 weeks, and then love the EpVIII money after that.

Yeah I'd like to see that pic. But who would he congratulate? Well done, Bob?

Yeah, I would be shocked if Disney didn't move episode 8 to December. Rogue One already has a December release date, so they may as well make it an annual tradition. Sucks for James, but the Avatar sequels weren't going to be bigger than the first anyways.

Probably Kathleen Kennedy or JJ Abrams.

It's not like Cameron owned the Titanic rights or anything. But Lucas congratulated the director, not the studio.

I don't think anyone actually believes that Avatar 2 is coming December 2017 at this point.

Of course, but if we think, no franchise will beat Star Wars ...
Hungers Games, The Maze Runner, Divergent, etc...
Even a finale sequel of a well-known franchise like Harry Potter is beaten

You can't say that a new IP will land in 2-3-4 years and will top this 248M OW

Oh, I don't doubt that they'd both be very successful. Difference is those three films from 2007 (Spidey 3, Shrek 3, Pirates 3) were all from different studios.

Why would Disney cut the legs out from under one of their huge, sci-fi space franchises with the biggest sci-fi space franchise? Star Wars 8 isn't moving from that 40th anniversary spot, so Guardians has got to go. If they decide to move one of them, of course.

If so then they would move Star Wars up. They aren't going to give up the opening weekend of May date.

They don't need to release in the same month as ANH to go all in on the 40th anniversary marketing. Skyfall certainly wasn't hurt because Dr. No came out in May '63 stateside.

Disney has:
- GotG2 : 5th May 2017
- Star Wars VIII : 26th May 2017
- Cars 3 : 16th June 2017
- Pirates 5 : 7th July 2017
- Spiderman : 28th July 2017

Overcrowded !

Lol, true. But they were doing the congrats over domestic only at the time, it says so in their congrats pictures.

Those are actually spaced as perfectly as they can be, considering the different scenarios.

Why you sound a little bitter though? :p

Domestic is relevant, and sort of a more stable measure than WW. But yeah, Avatar's WW is something else. Nothing is hitting it for a while.
Not bitter at all. Stop hearing me through text!

I just never understood the focus on domestic gross outside of a studio looking to gain the most profit back. But it's still just one market out of multitudes. How long before we're just focusing on Chinese gross all times?

Once the Chinese market becomes the most lucrative market for Hollywood. Or was that not a serious question?

AFAIK Disney does not have Spider-Man. It is still Sony. Disney has rights (lol) from Sony to use Spider-Man in MCU movies, and in return Disney will promote Spider-Man movies as official MCU movie.

I mean sure it's a Marvel character.. But Sony Pictures I believe is actually doing/releasing the movie.

One of those is gonna bomb, and I already know which one.

Disney doesn't care about Cars's box office ahaha

- Cars 1 sold approximately $10 billion worth of merchandise in its first five years of release
- Cars 2 sold more than $2.8 billion worth of merchandise in its first year alone in 2011

In comparison, Star Wars, it's $20 billion lifetime

Spider-Man is still Sony, despite his inclusion in the MCU. Cars 3 also doesn't have any sort of overlap in audience with GotG2, Star Wars or Pirates of the Caribbean.

Have a look how much of a May blockbuster's gross is made from the 4th weekend onwards. That gap is plenty of time.

It's Hollywood, it's American, it's kind of like home base and for many many years it was the absolute King of box office. In today's world it doesn't make as much sense but I would say US domestic was the most talked about until the 90s.

Also they almost always went together, I think all US domestic record holders are also the world wide record holder until maybe now.

fwiw, tonight/today is the first time I'm not seeing TFA.. So if Monday's box office take bombs, you know why.

Will probably go again with the family on Christmas day.. and again to IMAX on Sunday for the second poster. That would be five and six.
