It's the fuckin' box-office thread, elf.

Get thee hence if you can't nerd about numbers correctly.

I'm comin for you!

Looking at that list, going through the 2 studios releases, subtracting money earned from films released in 2014, it looks like, their 2015 films have worldwide earnings of:

Universal: 6.5 bil
Buena Vista: 4.5 bil

So yeah, I don't think Star Wars/Good Dinosaur can make up that difference. Domestically, I think it's possible-ish based on that initial list posted. But worldwide, Universal's taking the 2015 crown.

Interesting. I'm guessing the typical blockbuster in Japan is less frontloaded than domestically.

Yeah. That is true. For example for Revenge of the Sith opening weekend was around 20% of its totals. Could see Force Awakens overtake the totals of Revenge of the Sith if word of mouth is good but hard to see it overtake Phantom Menace in Japan (9.17 billion yen for Revenge of the Sith and 12.70 billion yen for Phantom Menace)

Anecdotal but there wasn't a seat open at my 2 pm showing that I just got out of. And all age groups were represented. The old man and his wife sitting next to me were having the time of their lives.

Very curious to see the Monday numbers.

Just a bit about the international performance of TFA.
Cannot believe it managed to wrestle the record in the UK away from Bond

Interesting that it completely conquered Europe but no records from Latin America or Asia.

On my phone but are the opening weekend records listed local currency or USD?

kswiston, when are the Monday numbers dropping?

Tomorrow between 3 and 4 pm most likely. We will probably get hints leading up to that though.

love on your sleeve

Man, I feel like Furious 7 doing 1.16 billion overseas is the oddest box office run ever.

Don't be surprised if you see $40+M for today. The drops last time Dec 21 was a Monday were very soft, and films with record breaking Sundays tend not to miss a beat the next day.

If anything, I'm glad it took the opening crown in Poland from Fifty Shades of Grey. Looking at LatAm and Asia I find it curious how SW became such a phenomenon here, despite originally coming at such a horrible time for the country (at the cusp of/during martial law). It managed to become as popular as in the US/Western Europe despite the vastly different political/cultural climate, it's fascinating, really.

It's not that weird when you start to think about history of Star Wars. Original released during time when majority of worldwide gross came from North America and Europe. It never developed same kind of classic status in developing world that was much poorer at the time. In Asia (excluding Japan), Africa etc Force Awakens is just a another hollywood blockbuster. It doesn't have same kind of special history as in Europe.

‘Force Awakens’ Poised To Beat ‘Spider-Man 2’s All-Time Monday Record Of $27.7M

It’s not going to stop. After breaking the weekend, opening day, Sunday, and Thursday night records Star Wars: The Force Awakens is looking at taking the Monday title with $30M-plus per non Disney analysts. Afternoon figures for Episode VII are strong ranging in the $17M-$22M range. As opposed to Friday when there were only 4.8% schools off, today that figure has blown up to 74%. Force Awakens’ Monday is set to take down Spider-Man 2‘s all-time Monday record of $27.7M which it has held since July 5, 2004. The next highest Mondays belong to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull‘s 2008 Memorial Day ($26.8M) and Jurassic World ($25.3M)

So do films that release mid/late December have really good legs (If they're good I mean). I'm wondering how Avatar got such a huge total after a modest debut and how much Star Wars can realistically do.

Keep in mind that record by SM2 is because it was a holiday. TFA would be breaking it without a holiday.

Spider-Man 2's monday record was on July 5. It wasn't a holiday but a ton of people were probably on vacation considering it was the week of the fourth of July.

Avatar's legs were pretty much unprecedented outside of other Cameron films (to make that much and have a less than 5% drop in your second weekend is nuts), but in general if you get a movie out either this week or last week and it's big enough, you don't have any major competition in terms of movies people want to go see until the middle of January, usually. So you get 2-4 weeks of being the biggest movie in the theaters, which is where the legs come from. That and kids having 2 weeks off from school (4 if you're college aged).

I think the bigger feat is Titanic's - opened to 20 mil and got 600 mil. A multiplier of about 20 which is twice the multiplier of fucking Avatar.

Titanic's 2-5th weekends were all bigger than its opening weekend.I doubt we will see that again in the near future for a film opening over 25 mil.

Didn't TFA also not open in Greece and India yet as well? I seem to recall hearing that. I mean, I know China is the other big market, but I figure India is decently sized as well?

Titanic also likely sold considerably more tickets than Avatar ever did. It was pretty crazy.

Titanic somehow pulled off being the #1 movie each week from December to April. No way in hell that's ever happening again.

Avatar managed it because it was a 3D/IMAX sensation; theaters were sold out for months and weeks of any 3D showing.

I don't think it will come close.

Completely agree; unless people suddenly care about 3D again. I must have heard 20 people I know rave about the movie without saying a single thing... about the movie. Nor have I ever seen the film really influence culture in any way.

Amazing 3D could do really well but I don't think Avatar 1 well.
