Thursday non-opening record will probably stand.

The last time we had a Christmas Eve land on a Thursday was 2009. Taking out Chipmunks (which opened the day before), Thursday of X-mas Eve in 2009 was down 31% over the Tuesday of that week. Avatar dipped 32% on Thursday, even though its Wednesday total was higher than its first Monday.

Non opening Thursday is $29.1M.

Reserving the right to update things as we get more daily actuals (and an early Friday gross), here is my guess at the weekend.

Thursday - $24M
Friday - $48M
Saturday - $55M
Sunday - $46M

Second Weekend = $149M

Total would be in the neighbourhood of $535M.

I am also starting to think that Bobby might get his 3 weekends over $100M.
So I'll have to revise my cumulative total by 3rd weekend from 625M to 650M.

Jesus Christ.

So considering that the fastest to $1B will start from the Wednesday openings in France and elsewhere, yesterday was day 7. Star Wars will break $1B on day 11 or 12.

Christmas Eve is the day before that. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Xmas at $50M+, even if I am going with $48M for now.

The more I think about it, the more I lean towards Saturday being the day TFA breaks $1B

If we're conservative and say $70M WW tomorrow and $55M WW Thursday, that's $814M heading into the weekend. Domestic has a pretty good shot at passing $100M on Fri+Sat. That leaves a little over $40M a day for overseas on Fri+Sat.

Sunday is the worst case scenario, since TFA will for sure be over $950M worldwide on Saturday.

How do ya'll think Mission Impossible would have done if it stayed on course for X-Mas? Tom Cruise must be thanking Xenu that he moved Rogue Nation ahead of not just Star Wars but 007 as well

You know what is a great idea for a family to go enjoy the holiday spirit of fun and family on Christmas Day?

Seeing a movie about concussions and brain damage in America's favorite past-time.

Box-Office GOLD.

They're going to war with a movie that owns every day of the week!

I think a lot of people want Star Wars to do well. Not because it's a good movie.
But because it's a good STAR WARS movie. Star Wars arguably is the biggest thing cinema wise. It's one of those things we'd put in an information pod about humanity to share with other species.

Speaking of war, X-Mas, and box office gold...they might be trying to chase down American Sniper, another crazy box office success

TFA now the 40th highest grossing film domestically of all time, in roughly only 125 hours.

It is now the 4th highest grossing of the 7 Star Wars films, behind only Revenge of the Sith (~$381m), A New Hope (~$461m) and Phantom Menace (~$475m).

You know what else is a great idea for a family to go enjoy the holiday spirit of fun and family on Christmas Day?

A historical drama about civil rights marches in the 60's.
Selma

A large scale musical drama about how much it sucks to be poor
Les Misérables

A war drama about a fuckin' horse
War Horse

Christmas releases for most movies about serious matters work just fine.

It will probably be #3 in the series after 7(.5) days. #1 domestic and likely Worldwide Star Wars film by the end of Saturday.

I was at my local Marcus theater a little bit ago picking up a gift card. The place was packed. The screen showing available seats was switching between the upcoming showings. Star Wars was sold out but for some random single seats here and there. Crazy.

Two of the more successful recent Christmas releases were about an ex-slave turned bounty hunter who killed white people and a hard-R biopic about a sex/drug addicted white collar criminal.

I might be going to see Star Wars again tonight. Doing my part to bring down James Cameron.

Yo, those both made a SHITLOAD of money. Fucking hell.

Tuesday Actual for The Force Awakens: $37,361,729. Domestic total is a bit over $325M in 5 days

EDIT: To put things in perspective, 16 years ago The Phantom Menace became the first film to break the $100M mark in 5 days.

Only one of them was Canadian. Or am I thinking of some one else?

Nah, it was just Shuster. Was more of a one-liner than a legit response anyway, heh.

How many theaters is Star Wars directly responsible for being built?

$300m+ in 5 days is absolutely insane.

It's crazy Avatar shows up and breaks a ton of records (and will continue to hold quite a lot) then we had some weekend records but nothing too massive. Then this year Furious 7 comes along and breaks fastest to 1 billion, then Jurassic World comes along and smashes that and breaks records........ then not 6 months later Star Wars shows up and smashes those.

Crazy year for box office records.
