I would guess there are a lot more available hungry writers able to turn out a script à la carte than directors, even ones with such a poisonous reputation as M Night, able to direct a movie without fucking it up or going crazy over budget. Again, just a guess.

Nobody seems to want to see it, and the only news coming out of it is focused on what a clusterfuck it is.
It's got like, negative buzz. The trailers don't work, the ads are just empty. If I remember correctly the Super Bowl spot registered minimal interest.
Will it probably do 40-50 mil opening weekend? Yeah. I can see that. But it'll have a 60% drop the following weekend, and be out of theaters within 4 weeks from that.

I enjoy the poster they chose for Earf. It looks like they have been brought to the principal's office to explain why their score was so low.
It's not going to review ok.
It's another Green Lantern situation. If After Earth ends up doing $200-250M worldwide, that would be enough to kill any chances of a sequel, but not really put it into gigantic bomb territory considering the $120-130M production budget. If World War Z ends up doing $200-250M worldwide, we're looking at a Jack the Giantslayer level bomb.

I wouldn't count on it reviewing well. There was a Yahoo! article not too long ago about WWZ and all the shooting problems they had with the script, endings, reshoots,etc.
I think WWZ is gonna be a surprise to the studio if they are expecting a huge critical success.
holy shit the Karate Kid made a lot of money. I didn't realize it came that close to 200m.

RIPD might be the biggest bomb of the Summer. At least World War Z has Brad Pitt going for it.
The budget has supposedly moved past $200 million.
According to Box Office Mojo, the highest-grossing zombie movie ever made is Zombieland. It made 75 million domestic.
World War Z's budget is somewhere between 150-250 million dollars.

Green Lantern is a pretty good comparison point. Although I really do feel like World War Z is even further behind the 8-ball right now than Lantern was.

Yea even the biggest one WW, RE: Afterlife, came just under 300 mill. And that was the fourth in the series, building up on franchise highs. WWZ is on track to be a complete disaster.
There is always the chance that it will scratch the disaster movie itch that manages to dominate WW box offices, ala 2012. That's pretty much what they got to hope for at this point.
World War Z looks like it will be this year's John Carter.
An article I read about it claims that they are refusing to even use the word "zombie" to market the World War Z.....reminds me almost exactly of how Disney refused to use the word "Mars" for John Carter.
So yeah, even though people love zombies, there's a good chance they might not even know that WWZ is a zombie movie.

Holy shit, I just did some google snooping, and it looks like there are reports of R.I.P.D. costing upwards of $200M as well.
Movie execs at Paramount and Universal really need to re-examine their budgeting strategies. If your film is not a sequel and does not have a strong property backing it up, you shouldn't be spending much more than $100-125M to make the film.

Pretty much. It won't make its budget back, but it will definitely be an indicator to hollywood that big budget zombie movies just don't work very well. At least if they're as mis-managed as WWZ seems to have been. I'd love to be proven wrong though because WWZ isn't what I want, but I think someone with a bit more proficiency for the genre can do something wonderful with a chunky budget. not $150-$200 mill, but a $100 mill zombie film directed by Danny Boyle/Peter Jackson/Zach Snyder...

Word of mouth could kill it after a week and that's if the first week of sales is incredibly strong.
So far the marketing for the movie has been all over the place and completely messy. A lot of people don't understand that it is a zombie movie and if that can't understand that from adverts that are supposed to get butts in seats what chance does the movie really have?

You guys are under estimating a PG13 Zombie flick, staring Brad Pitt, based off a popular book in a time where Zombies are huge(just look at the Walking Dead's TV ratings)
Plus the movie doesn't have much competition after it other than the real Summer bomb-White House Down

Smith's Hiatus after Seven Pounds might have hurt his career momentum a bit. I know he was focusing on establishing his children in the business, but taking 3-4 years off from making movies in your prime is sort of unusual. Leading men are most relevant from their late 20s to their late 40s.

White House Down will probably end up being a surprise, honestly. Emmerich knows how to get a big opening weekend. He makes great trailers. Jamie Foxx as the president rocking a grenade launcher is going to be so ridiculous an image that people will be like "Fuck it, lets go laugh at that for a couple hours" at WORST. Best case - people legitimately want to see an action flick with the Chatum and Django defending the White House.

It's arguably a better made movie than the original, which mostly coasts on nostalgia, that ending tournament, and the charm of Pat Morita.
The remake has legitimate character arcs (multiple) and the first time I can remember that Jackie Chan really ACTED.

Um no. I would guess that far more people under the age of 15 have seen the new Karate Kid than the old one. I could up that age to 20 and still feel pretty confident.
Who even remembers the dude's name, anyway? Nobody. Especially on a movie more than 20 years old. Jaden Smith is a worldwide star that many people know the name of. He and his Karate Kid are far more well known than the original.
It's barely a Will Smith movie. Jaden Smith has 90% of the screen time. Hence why it's shit. Quit forcing your son down our throats, Will. He doesn't have your charisma and the audience seems him as more of a "hanger-on" than an actor.
Those are vampires.
I'd argue Karate Kid succeeded more because of Jackie Chan than Jaden.
I'm calling it right now -- World War Z is going to be this year's Green Lantern. It'll have a respectable opening weekend, probably somewhere between $50-60 million. It's going to be a close battle for the no. 1 spot that weekend with Man of Steel, which should hold it if word of mouth is good. But WWZ will drop drastically -- at least 60 percent -- the following week and will barely make it past $100 million.
White House Down looks to be pure stupid fun. If 2012 can do well in the fall with John Cusack as the lead, then a movie leading with Channing Tatum (how the hell did he become a big star all of a sudden?) and Django with a more friendly approach to Die Hard in the White House should do well, especially with Emmerich pushing it. The only thing that might hold WHD back is Olympus Has Fallen earlier this year.
WWZ has bomb written all over it. Anecdotally, most people I know don't even know it's a zombie film. It's as if the marketing has done its damnedest to to turn this into The Happening with Brad Pitt -- a respected actor running away from an unknown enemy. We can only hope this has near the entertainment value of Mark Wahlberg talking to a tree.
If 28 Days Later's enemies are considered "zombies," then the infected in I Am Legend could be considered "zombies" as well.

Nah, Chan was considered past his prime by that point. A string of shitty movies (including The Tuxedo) had dropped the value of his name quite a bit.

Iron Man 3 always looked like it was going to break $400M (after that first weekend).
Legs are actually on the low side of things.
I think RIPD will perform like Men in Black series since it seems to appeal to the same crowd and more. That won't be too bad for box office.

I don't think 28 Days Later has zombies in it myself (it shares the same company with The Crazies), so no, I Am Legend does not have zombies.
Men in Black had Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Ryan Reynolds is box office poison outside of romcoms and Jeff Bridges is a well respected actor, but not one to bring in the dollars.
I don't consider the infected in 28 Days Later to be zombies, but the general populace does. The infected in I Am Legend were not vampires. They had more in common with zombies. Either way, it's a symantics.

Yeah, as Jdfox said, Ryan Reynolds isn't exactly at the level of Will Smith was back in 1997. Not to mention this is now a tired premise thanks to Men in Black.

I think you're arguing semantics/nomenclature.
For all intents and purposes, 28 days later was regarded as a zombie film. I can better buy the argument that I Am Legend didn't have zombies only because it was shown in the film that they were smart and methodical, whereas the zombies in 28 days later were not.
Still, if the general perception of Legend was as being a "zombie film," then the comparison is still apt.
