Not that it matters after a $2.8B box-office gross, but weren't those $500M costs for Avatar debunked?

Sometimes I think GAF takes the highest budget rumour as a film's gospel cost, regardless of the credibility of the rumour. People were throwing around $300-400M budgets for Transformers 3 as well.

Yeah, The New York Times (I believe) reported a $500m budget including marketing costs. Yet when you added all their numbers up, it amassed to just $380m (again, this is including marketing - which nobody ever includes). They never clarified where the missing $120m came from. It was all for the half a billion headline.

Meanwhile, FOX keeps trying to say the budget was $230m. Most sources say its was more accurately hovering around $300m.

The budget+advertising for Avatar was probably closer to 350m. So yeah those initial reports of 500m were just bs.

Put me in the camp of those planning to see John Carter opening weekend, but fully expecting it to bomba... and hard.

It's your time being wasted watching tripe not mine.

Chronicle was full in the theater I was in last night.

Fun film that feels driven by concept rather than story. Nonetheless, a good watch.

maybe it was quiet because it was so boring the kids fell asleep

Didn't like the film, eh?

No, I was actually surprised myself. All the kids from where I could see were invested heavily in the film, never fidgeting, or talking or crying.

In comparison, when I went to see Chronicle the previous week, the entire theater was teenagers and young adults, and none of them would shut the eff up.

Ghost Rider was a fun film, really surprised. First was awful and went in expecting crap, but we all had a good time.

It would have done better if Disney marketed the movie. I barely saw anything for it on their own channel.

The movie got a ton of marketing compared to any other studio ghibli film, which usually get no coverage at all. Trailers for it have been attached to almost every younger ranged film now for about 4-5 months now and did see good amount of ads on TV. Wouldn't know about on Disney channel itself, I never touch the channel but on regular channels they were running ads for the film on a regular basis.

I actually haven't seen the film yet, and was just making a bad joke. ;p

Can't believe Safe House is doing so well, it was really boring and predictable. Good job on Chronicle and surprising how well Ghost Rider fared.

Around $300m. Not $500m.
If Avatar really cost only $300 million, we'd be seeing mo-cap extravaganzas on that technological level all the time.
edit: Seriously though, it's a great movie. And I'm glad to see it get more of a re-evaluation from people as the years go on. Those early days after its release were dark dark days.
Yeah, it's really good. And it's so weird. That was being marketed as a summer blockbuster? What the hell?

Fuck man, whenever I want to swag out at the club I watch Miami Vice for some LESSONS.

It's easily one of my top 10 last decade now. I love how you have to pay attention to what they say. And it's almost too slick. In terms of a style over substance film I'll take this over Drive any day.

Oh damn, might as well go on topic here, I'm probably gonna watch Ghost Rider 2 pretty soon. I wish it was r-rated but despite it being pg-13 I like the Crank guys and Nic Cage/Idris Elba

I honestly thought Avatar would bomb after it's initial trailer (which I liked), despite my blind faith behind James Cameron.

I'm not saying John Carter will be a success though. I'm excited for it and I'm certain I will enjoy it but damn...I just hope Stanton gets to make films again.

Rectify that shit and then roll right into Mann and David Milch (Deadwood)'s Luck.

I might watch Miami Vice when I get the chance, but I can almost guarantee I won't watch Luck. I never liked what I saw from it (I watched the first ep) and was never a fan of Deadwood.

Ignoring the fact that Avatar had James Cameron and some of the world's more talented SFX people working on it, $300 million is a LOT of money. Very few films cost that much, even with marketing, and very few make the 700M+ worldwide it would take to see a return on investment. There have been enough gigantic bombs in the past 10 years to show that throwing money at a project does not get you a better return.

who watches these denzel movies

Denzel has been a pretty steady box office draw for over a decade now.

How is Luck?. I mostly enjoyed the first episode months ago.

Just finished Deadwood, LOVED it. Too bad it just ended though. I wish Milch would just put out a novel or two to continue/finish his story.

Luck is great. You really have to pay attention to the dialogue, but its very rewarding. If you loved Deadwood, give it a chance.

Great. Love it so far and apparently it only gets better. On its way to (hopefully) being the best HBO show in forever.

New episode in 15 minutes!

My wife and daughter went to see Arriety this weekend. Said it was fantastic, but the theater just threw it on the smallest screen at the complex. Place was packed, so hopefully they move it into a larger threater if its legs hold up.
