Wkd Box Office Est. 06•15-17•12 - Weekend of the xaosslug MUST COME BACK

Pssst. A 70% drop from Friday to Friday is falling off a cliff. Hit movies do not do that.

Just keeping you in the loop mang.
I'm not saying it's a hit; but 20M in the second week is nothing to scoff at for an R-rated hard Sci-Fi film like Prometheus, it'd be lucky if it got that in the first weekend let alone the second.

It feels wrong to have Bob doing a box office thread. Wrong and dirty.

You love it you minx.

Lucky? A Ridley Scott sci-fi movie starring Fassbender and Charlize Theron?

Disaster is more like it.

I'm BO-GAF's reckoning.

Er, what? Ridley Scott Sci-Fi movies have NEVER been money-makers. And Fassbender has NEVER been a Box-Office draw, I don't know why someone would even think up such a thing. Theron is debatable.

20M or not, that's a 60-70% drop for a Ridley Scott movie that's tied to Alien. You're framing this with the wrong context. Heck, RS and Alien set aside, that's still a 60-70% drop for a blockbuster movie. I suppose if it wasn't RS and had nothing to do with Alien it would have tanked on its opening week, with no word of mouth spreading through the following weeks. People just didn't like the movie, and the fact that it's an Alien prequel made it all the more apparent.

Before we really get into this let's just clarify something.....

DO you seriously think that Prometheus would have been lucky to have had an opening weekend gross of just $20m?

He said as much in an interview I heard with him on the radio a few weeks back. I suppose it does' t preclude him from being involved with a sequel to Prometheus, but he was very clear that his heart is in making television shows and that he wants to get back to long form storytelling.

Thanks for the info, mang. Another writer might be a good idea for the sequel but I dont think Ridley really cares at this point

I knew Rock of Ages would target the 30,40-something female crowd. Looked awful.

It really did. Saw the trailer in front of Avengers/Prometheus and just couldn't see anyone going out of their way, female or male, to see something like this smack down in the middle of the summer rush.

They might've done better in a slower part of the year, honestly.

Nah, you're framing it within the wrong context. The connection with Alien has been heavily downplayed by the marketing (not like it matters considering the Alien brand means jack shit today), and Ridley Scott has never been a huge box office draw.

Hyperbole.

It wouldn't have been lucky but I certainly wouldn't have been surprised to see an R-rated Sci-Fi movie underperform like that.

Adam Sandler needs to stop making movies.

I watched J+J and it was terrible and sort of amusing knowing its a terrible film. Good thing, I was over at my friends and they'd rented it so I didn't spend any money on it

after watch red letter media's 2 video critique of Jack and Jill - I wonder how AS's friends profited off his new movie; and how much this new one cost

Saw Moonrise Kingdom this week (intl market). Me and the gf both really liked it. Fun, fun movie.

Prometheus opened well, but I think it's pretty clear that the WOM isn't very good, or is incredibly mixed that people aren't going to take a risk to see it in theaters given the 60% drop. Sci-fi and horror though aren't usually films that have strong legs. Still though, if this was a better movie, it probably could have done closer to 140 million.

A 120 million result or whatever might not be bad in a broader sense, but it'll be curious to see if Fox pursues a sequel. Clearly the film will be profitable, but Fox has to know that a 2nd one won't make nearly as much money unless it's a high quality film.

Wot.

The initial Prometheus teaser trailer is an almost exact copy of the Alien trailer. Even down the sharp squeal like sound in the trailer.

And IIRC some trailers that played during the NBA play offs even mentioned the Alien connection directly.

That is NOT what you said at all.

Really? Do you seriously fucking believe regular people are going to recognize the similarities between a trailer released in 2011 and one released in 1979? What's wrong with you?

..and again, it's not like it matters considering the Alien branding has been irrevocably destroyed by Alien 3, Resurrection, AvP, and AvP 2.

You said heavily downplayed. Clearly this was not the case.

Between this and claiming that Prometheus would be lucky to open with $20m over three days I am inclined to ask what is wrong with you?

I'll ask in this thread, has the cruise missile lost his BO pull. Seems like an awfully small opening for Rock of Ages.

Eh, the age of star driven films are over anyway, but I don't think this is a good litmus test given he's not the main character, and this isn't a typical Tom Cruise film, not to mention it wasn't received very well. Jack Reacher in December will be a better indicator.

Clearly, it fucking was the case; anyone who isn't blind recognizes how the marketers and even Ridley Scott/Damon Lindelof themselves downplayed the Alien connection. They could've been shouting it from the mountain-tops, "The prequel to Alien" could've been plastered all over posters and trailers/commercials.

The average Joe would have no clue this movie was connected to Alien, nor would they even give a fuck if they did know.

The one thing I agree with is that marketing did try to downplay the direct relation to Alien. I don't know about the US, but posters in France actually read "By the director of Alien".

But then, assuming that the movie is standing on its own legs, then these are very poor legs indeed.

Good point about MI above. I didn't even know he wasn't the main character, to be honest i haven't even seen trailers. But i've seen tons of billboards in LA.

It's kind of surprising to me that Men in Black 3 isn't even going to make it to $200 million. I thought it would do better than that.

Prometheus will get a sequel anyway, just with smaller budget and PG-13 rating I guess.

It could have been PG-13 anyway. I don't remember anything in the movie that warranted a R rating.

Apparently the
surgery scene
is what pushed them over the edge.

Its not really a Tom Cruise movie though. You expect Men to want to go watch a musical??

+

watch his fat lawyer asshole persona from that movie become a massive hit whenever it hits the screen

Sad that Adam Sandler's only decent comedy in years bombed when Grown Ups 2 will come out next year and make a bajillion dollars.

For once someone on this forum is actually underestimating the sci-fi genre's appeal. This is a pretty miserable lose WoW that represents poor word of mouth, as many suspected.

That's not to say that Prometheus couldn't have done worse, but certainly Fox hoped (and at one point expected) it would do much better.

Thanks, damn it did well. Hopefully they green light two follow ups based off of how well the first one did.

And hopefully the books the next two are based on are good. I enjoyed the movie.

The two sequels were green lighted well before THG came out.

Oh don't worry they're coming, the numbers THG pulled domestically are absolutely amazing and Lionsgate only cares about those anyway. Seriously I'm still amazed that it had such amazing legs, usually that sort of book to movie adaptation is very front loaded.
