The same thing always happens with funny people who once made awesome films...

1) They get famous
2) Get married and have kids
3) Cutback/lose their raunchy/crude humor and develop shitty family films or play characters that are a copycat of their previous successes.
4) Lose their appeal and start milking what they can before an embarrassing exit from the industry.

We are talking about the voice cast from Madagascar?
No other movie in the top ten fits into your assessment.

Pssst. A 70% drop from Friday to Friday is falling off a cliff. Hit movies do not do that.

Just keeping you in the loop mang.

If anything that makes it's maintaining just a 60% drop sort of impressive. The movie isn't going to break any records but it seems to be doing fine.

I'm playing some Batman music on xaos' return. Good to have you back man, that sucks about your ISP crapping out like that.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
I wonder how long before Andy Samberg goes back to SNL. He hasn't exactly been doing so hot in films where he is a lead.

The initial Prometheus teaser trailer is an almost exact copy of the Alien trailer. Even down the sharp squeal like sound in the trailer.
I think this point is getting really overplayed.
Yeah, they use the same typeface (and text animation) and yeah, Prometheus sample the scream from the Alien teaser (though it uses it for a very different effect), but that's as far as the similarities go.
Alien's teaser tell you nothing of the story and show almost nothing of the movie, Prometheus is cut like a normal Hollywood trailer - showing scenes from very late in the film and revealing quite a bit about the plot.

Unless I'm missing a teaser here, my references are these -

The two sequels were green lighted well before THG came out.

Three sequels, actually. Lionsgate already plans to split the third book (Mockingjay) into two films. The second film (Catching Fire) is already on the schedule for November 2013.

Eh.

The script for Star Trek 1 is far worse than anything even Lindelof's written; the only thing that made that movie entertaining was Abrams and the cast.

That's the one thing that helps me sleep at night; they overcame one shitty script, surely they can do it again! But Ortiz/Kurtzman combined with the power of Lindelof!? They may be too much to beat!

Nah, you're framing it within the wrong context. The connection with Alien has been heavily downplayed by the marketing (not like it matters considering the Alien brand means jack shit today), and Ridley Scott has never been a huge box office draw.

As for context, Alien Ressurection saw a 60% dropoff.....if that gives you any clue about how much esteem Prometheus is being held in.

Prometheus is certainly held in a higher esteem than A:R critically.

aww, <3

right? They (Earthlink) say it's because the wiring is old, and they can't do anything about it. :-(

I wonder how Madagascar will do with Brave coming out next week. And i wonder how Seeking a friend for the end of the world will do/be.

I just wish Moonrise Kingdom would play somewhere near me. Not a single screen in NC. Closest screen showing it is 6 hours away. :(

There's like one near me and I live in a very populus area currently. So I'm pretty much starting to give up and joining the "waiting for DVD" brigade (is there a brigade?)

Is Prometheus really that divided? I wanted to watch it but I've been seeing a lot negativity from my friends and on GAF.

Without spoiling anything, what exactly is the problem(s?) with the movie?

FYI for a film like Prometheus to just be doing 'fine' is simply not good enough.

Such are the economics of modern event film making.

Characters are dumb/plot is a mess

How incredible is it that a Sandler and Cruise film bomb in the same week? These two used to be the kings of the mountain. Possibly still are with the right niche but nowhere near as sure proof.

Tom Cruise just came off his biggest movie ever. He'll be fine.

And Sandler just needs to go back to shitty PG-13 movies, he'll bounce back

Cruise just had the highest-grossing movie of his career, and his next two movies are action films, so I doubt he's in trouble.

lol, Hunger Games beat Battleship on Monday.

Avengers also had a really good Monday, only down 18% over last Monday. I still think 625-650 is in play. Going to have legs until the summer ends as all of the early summer movies so far don't have any legs and won't have a meaningful number of theaters in a month. Hunger Games is going to end up doing about 25 million after day 46(where Avengers is now) and it was a lot, lot lower than Avengers at this point.

Hunger Games has had great hold each week. It still has not opened in China or Japan. If China and Japan can give it a least 40 Million more it will break 700 Million World Wide.

Summer weekdays are really helping out Prometheus. It will be at $98M or so by the end of Thurs, and should be able to pass $120M without too much difficulty. Not great, but it will at least have better legs than Watchmen.

I wonder how Brave will do this weekend. Reviews so far are not up to Pixar standards, but every Pixar film other than Ratatouille in the last 10 years has opened to $60M+

People had still not gotten over his batshit crazy antics when that came out.

I think a big part of the problem problem was the marketing, rather than being attributed to Tom Cruise. Bad posters, mediocre trailers/commercials that couldn't decide whether to be goofy or serious. The fact that it turned out to be mixed at best probably didn't help matters.

Also, it did do decent worldwide numbers (260 WW total)

Hunger Games moved ahead of Transformers after Wednesday's numbers came in. Still will have 400+ theaters next week, should move ahead of Spider Man in 7-14 days.

Avengers isn't losing that many theaters and has been having great week on week drops so far this week. Will be over 591 heading into the weekend, decent chance it goes over 600 before next weekend. Probably going to beat MIB3 this weekend.

Deadline Hollywood is saying that Brave's Friday was around $25M. We will find out the official Friday estimate in a couple hours, but Cars 2 opened to a $25.7M Friday last year and had a $66M weekend. Brave should continue Pixar's string of $60M+ openers (Ratatouille was the only film to debut to less than that in the past decade).

Abe Lincoln and Seeking a Friend aren't doing so well.

Also, The Bourne Legacy moved its release from Aug 3rd to Aug 10th, so it is no longer launching the same weekend as Total Recall. Probably good for both flicks. If Total Recall bombs or disappoints, the Dark Knight Rises will have three weekends at #1 now. I doubt that it will beat Bourne in its fourth weekend though.

Official Friday estimates are up:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/

1) Brave = $24.5M
2) Abe Lincoln = $6.3M
3) Madagascar 3 = $6.1M
4) Prometheus = $2.9M
5) Rock of Ages = $2.5M
6) Snow White = $2.5M
7) That's My Boy = $2.4M
8) Avengers = $2M
9) MIB3 = $1.75M

- Prometheus broke $100M, but is down another 50% from last Friday.
- That's My Boy only dropped 46% from its opening Friday
- Avengers had an amazing hold. It dropped 7% from last Friday, and should be close to $7M for the weekend. $600M will fall by this Thursday, which is a week earlier than I thought last thread.

Madagascar 3 will pass $150M on Saturday, and should become the first movie in its series to break $200M. Considering the fact that Brave was released, it had a decent drop on Friday.

MIB3 is still tracking really closely to the Karate Kid. $170M will happen, and $175M is still possible.

Glad to see see Avenger's pass Titanic's initial release number.

Why the sudden interest in Madagascar?
I always thought that series had average succes, and that it was going down in popularity. Surprised this iteration will be th highest grossing.
