Wolfenstein TNO: 2014 GotY + one of the best shooters ever *GIF WARNING*

After Sound Shapes, RESOGUN, Transistor and Flower, this is the fifth game in my journey back into gaming and Playstation consoles. I'm only at chapter 4 but it is polished, controls great and has a perfect dash of humour/heart. You can easily identify where to puzzle out collectibles (great for OCs like myself) and the perk system has kept me trying different playstyle. I would highly recommend this game to anyone who wants to enjoy the gaming equivalent of an 80s action film.

I agree with everything you said and I still didn't completly loved it.

And makes me sad not knowing why but I can say without doubt imo Metro LL is better.

The game didn't clicked with me.

The game rocks, Machine Games are very good at what they do. The gunplay is just exquisite, and I actually care about the story. Such a good purchase, if anyone is on the fence just go and get the game, we can't afford to let games like this slip by.

I've lavished a bunch of praise on the game in various threads but I do have some issues with the game:

-enemy variety mostly consists of ever increasing bullet-sponge armored enemies, and the dog type enemies are sorely underused. They really needed some enemies that had totally different attack patterns and mobility mixed in to keep you on your toes.

-The laser cutting wasn't used as creatively as I hoped

-The bosses were okay for the most part, but I think there was a lot of wasted potential considering how awesome the gameplay is.

-The moment to moment pacing was great within a level as you're never doing something for too long, but the way it's broken up into disparate levels is cause for a bit of a herky-jerk structure.

- I agree that
the moon
location didn't quite live up to its potential, even though it was still a great level.

-Various polish issues: audio mix, rough editing when transitioning from cutscenes to gameplay that often disrupts the momentum of a scene, texture pop in, etc.

Currently playing it and enjoying it well enough, but I wouldn't call it "fantastic" or anything. It's a very solid fps that looks and plays well. No rough edges so far, but nothing amazing either. I do like how grounded the story is though, and the death animations/physics are very satisfying.

I'm not in love with the weapon selection (up to level 6). I still have a few to unlock, but I think I preferred the weapons from 1946 more.

Im on like chapter 10 or so and yeah this game is next level shit. You can tell it comes from the Riddick guys. Amazing game. So much attention to detail and care went into everything. And its a lot of fun to kill deranged Nazis. They are so fucked up in this game.

I just beat it. Seriously, the best FPS I've played in a long time. A great variety of missions/weapons and an engaging plot/narrative.

Ending spoiler:
After Bubi died, I stabbed that POS 12 times and shot him for a good 5-10 seconds.

I'm most of the way through this, so pardon that I didn't read the OP in its entirety, but I just wanted to chime in and say how much I'm enjoying this game.

It's definitely a GOTY contender.

worst part of the game: tiny white subtitles on white backgrounds

it happens in every other cutscene / level

I bought the game at launch but I haven't really started digging into it until now. I'm about halfway through it at the moment. The game is very well done but I can't help but criticize it for a few parts of the game that feel absolutely annoying and poorly designed (like that super robot boss battle with the AOE attack that prevents you from damaging it the way it was designed. I wanted to throw my controller out of the window). Beyond a few minor annoyances, it is a solid shooter indeed.

OP just had to mention Syndicate not its stuck in my mind.

If Wolfenstein added Syndicate style co-op it could one of the greatest of all times. Even the heavies wouldn't suck nearly as much in co-op since they'd have to divide their attention.

But of the Wolfenstein that you get out of the box, anybody who misses older school hipfire run and gun shooters will find their glands suitably stroked here, along with a surprise or two.

So, I did platinum this game, got all the collectibles and health upgrades etc while playing through Fergus' timeline on Uber and just did the first mission again to get the save Wyatt trophy for plat.

Is it worth another playthrough to see Wyatt's whole timeline?

I had completely ignored it up until launch, something about the first few trailers for it made the game look incredibly uninteresting to me. I noticed the good reviews and saw the thread here which made me take another look a week after launch and I ended up loving it.

Great game for all the reasons stated, but for me the most pleasant surprise was how well they implemented a simple stealth mechanic.

Fine. I ordered it.
Will pick up before or after my hockey game tomorrow.

This thread made me open my wallet.
Do not disappoint me.

Also, do not judge this game after finishing first level. It gets much much better later on.

Nicest surprise of 2014 so far for me. Still need to get that one trophy for platinum :\

Agreed. While reviewing it I got a bit nervous right at the start but then boom the game opened up completely.

It's that late title card, man.

I like to think that the first level is designed the way it is intentionally,
to make the jump from 1946 to 1960 more impactful
.

Bought it a couple weeks ago due to the love it got in GOTY threads, and got the platinum shortly after. It really is an excellent game despite a few areas where I think there were some missed opportunities. Currently playing on 999 mode and it's a lot of fun. Never used akimbo guns my first time through but with infinite ammo it's awesome.

What I wrote in the OT. I was blown away, but considering that these are the guys/gals that did The Darkness and Riddick, I shouldn't have been. Loved every minute of it!

I just finished my Fergie Ferg(us) timeline, and I was completely/utterly blown away. The sweeeet satisfaction of dual-wielding weaponry with a real kick feels absolutely glorious. There were so many wonderful lines, my favorites being some of Anya's purely psychotic anecdotes and Tekla's musings on the Soul. I loved the gruff monologues we got in times of crisis as Blazkowicz- they gave the narrative such a personal tone, and it wasn't too maudlin.

I think Machine Games set the pace perfectly- I found myself really exploring in each level to attempt to uncover enigma codes, and collectibles. The art direction in the Kreisau Circle hideout is stunning- it felt like home, and nice respite from all the insanity. A good place to explore and understand the supporting cast, and a quiet moment to breathe after some of the craziest firefights! The villains were so nefarious, and incited much rage from me even when playing - I wanted to rip Frau Engel apart during Camp Belica. The horrors of the camp re-created in some digital terror- it was so bleak. And felt so heavy. Thank goodness for the introduction of Roth, and the greater plan to strike back.

This game. This game had me floored. Whether it was aiming down the sights of the LaserKraftwerk to obliterate Nazis into gibs, or to pause and listen to the rendition of "Tapfrer Kleiner Liebling"- the sense of atmosphere mixed in with god-tier shooting mechanics meant bliss. Sliding about, firing a shotgun from each hand, just felt so GOOD. Throwing knives from a distance, having a fun perk system to encourage new ways to engage in combat- there was a ton to love.

I'll go through the Wyatt timeline sometime soon- I wish we'd get a full prequel of Anya's endeavors and her own actions of resistance. But I've got nothing but lovelovelove for Machine Games- these ex-Starbreeze gods know how to write, and know how to make shooting fun. One of the best games I've been fortunate to play in so many years.

Bought it today and played through the starting section. I am enjoying it and if people are saying it's the worst part of the game then I'll enjoy it.

But I will say I'm already hating the fallout system of picking up crap all over the place like bullets and armor and health packs, constant hunting for shit bugs me.

The first level is definitely the worst of the game, it gives such a false sense of what the game's about. Especially the literal opening 5-10 minutes on the plane. I was honestly like "are you kidding me?". Needless to say it gets way, way better.

Yup, they start you out with a few CoD setpieces to get things going and then unleash the beast later. But I like the first level, though. My least favorite level in the game is
the sewer

The only thing I was let down by was how the game's story gave the impression for some major twists and turns.
In the very beginning, there are signs of subliminal messages and devices during cutscenes. Also, the choice you have to make at the beginning between Fergus and Wyatt, and how it referred to them as timelines, also made it seem like the game was going somewhere meta.

I was let down this wasn't the case. That's not to say that I was expecting something like Bioshock Infinite or Spec Ops: The Line, but I did expect something more. With that said, this game has probably the most fun and energetic storyline I've played in a schlocky FPS game. It knew exactly what it was, and it had fun with it. We need more games that aren't afraid to be true to its genre and be proud of it.

The ending where BJ's VoiceOver of "The New Colossus" plays as he sees Anya leaving is one of my favorite moments ever in a game.

Wolfenstein TNO was surprisingly fantastic.

Just found out recently Anya was voiced by one of my favorite actresses, too. Alicja Bachleda.

Yes. I've seen some people express disappointment at, perhaps, the brevity of the ending, but it was everything I could have hoped for. It was poignant and set up well for a sequel.

I finished Wolfenstein just before I started playing Watch_Dogs and man, how I missed Wolfen when I was playing WD. :(
Great game, I hope Machinegames gets to make its sequel.

really looking forward to getting and playing this one. i use every platform - i was thinking about getting it for XB1 because as far as i have seen it's not a bad port & basically i don't want to totally neglect the system (for PC & PS4) - has anyone tried all 3 and can confirm this? i saw random thoughts about sound problems on consoles?

I'm not looking for people to blindly say go PC master race - I am a big Steam user, if the port isn't that bad I'd like to put XB1 to use, basically. thanks!

I do agree the low audio mix is not good. I had to go to headphones on the PC version to get the necessary sound. I don't know why the game is so quiet compared to other PC audio. Hopefully they patch that down the road

Threads like this are always so so so bad for my wallet. I am going to have to wait for it to go down in price, but will definitely check it out when it hits that magic price point for me. Great OP.

I'm currently on Chapter 9 and loving the game so far! Speaking of hurting your wallet I just discovered that on the Bethesda store they have an W:THO Limited Edition art book for sale for $40. I'm really tempted to pick this up, but with shipping for me its $60, ouch.

Only 500 produced exclusively for the Bethesda Store, the Exclusive Edition contains a tip-in plate, signed and numbered by Axel Torvenius, Art Director, and Tor Frick, Technical Art Director.

I have the only the XB1 version and its good in my opinion. I decided to go with it vs. PC because I wanted a couch game and there is no multi for which I would've wanted mouse and keyboard. The textures are a bit poor on the occasional wall or floor but the game runs well on the XB1, I have no regrets about getting it. Well other than I picked it up before the Steam summer sale price drop to $30 on PC. ;) I haven't really noticed much in the way of audio issues, but I've been using headphones for the most part.

The silenced pistol has perfect accuracy across giant rooms, one-shots most enemy types and doesn't alert enemies if you miss them by millimeters.

Also this game is basically the Riddick sequel you've always wanted. Buy this game.

Gonna have to side with this guy. No offense to OP and to each his own as far as games go, but I didn't feel like this game was remotely GOTY material. It was a good shooter, and worth a go for sure (two in my case since I stacked the 1k for it), but being able to play virtually the entire game on the highest difficulty with just the silenced pistol and sniping enemies with it from a mile away kinda broke any illusion of tension or difficulty for me.

just got this game in the mail today and I was wondering what that said because I literally blinked and saw it for the tiniest split second at the beginning
and it's my first wolfenstein

two hours in on PS4 and I'm really, really digging it. Only two things that I really dislike about the gunplay but I've gotten over them -

- x and y sensitivity are not the same at their highest levels
- x and y sensitivity are too damn low at their highest levels

Not only did they banned the swastika, wich i have no problem with, in Germany, no, they got rid of the english voice over!!!! Now i have to go trough this crappy german dub.

Other then that, it's lots of fun. One of the few games i wished there was a mp mode.

game is great and all but that end boss fight is unbearably frustrating,
couldn't pass that, gave up.
that kind of soured the whole experience a bit for me.
