Wolfenstein TNO: 2014 GotY + one of the best shooters ever *GIF WARNING*

Gonna have to side with this guy. No offense to OP and to each his own as far as games go, but I didn't feel like this game was remotely GOTY material. It was a good shooter, and worth a go for sure (two in my case since I stacked the 1k for it), but being able to play virtually the entire game on the highest difficulty with just the silenced pistol and sniping enemies with it from a mile away kinda broke any illusion of tension or difficulty for me.

So don't do that?

Are there significant differences between both storylines?I regret not choosing Fergus.
J is replaced with another character. Some levels are different in how you traverse them. For example
in prison Fergus lets out all the prisoners and you go down the stairs fighting your way out rather than just taking the elevator.
Other levels have different areas unlocked that were previously inaccessible in the Wyatt one. There are different upgrades as well.

I preferred the Fergus one more.

OH MY FUCKING GOD.

I just accidental found out on YT that those heavy enemy miniguns can be recharged with those wall power outlets! Why didn't I try that before?!?! I fucking finished the game on Uber already! :D :D :D

I would still put Stick of Truth has my GOTY so far but Wolfenstein is undeniably a great game and will be one of the best still by the end of the year.

I beat the last level mostly using laser/energy weapons including those turret guns. Just pop back around a corner and recharge. Use dual AR Marksman set to laser prior to that and there you have it.

I didn't figure out that the Marksman's secondary fire is
lasers
until I started going back through the levels. I just thought the gun worked that way
in the moonbase only.

It is important to mention how awesome villains are in this game. They are all uber creepy, memorable and instantly hate-able as soon as you fist encounter them. Machine Games did fantastic job with them. Game is set in a very gritty world full of serious characters, but comic-book-ness of the entire package [which has to be present in Woflenstein game] is perfectly held together by the presence of the mecha-Nazis and two main villains who were expertly voiced by Nina Franoszek and Dwight Schultz.

It's OK. I had a blast.

I really liked the game overall, but I wished for longer sections with straight-forward action. The London Nautica was the most well designed map with the best battle in the whole game and I wish they would've gone with that design for the most part of the game. The mix of action and stealth was often really good but it got interrupted by pretty boring exploration parts that focused on carrying the story forward. I didn't like the shift in pacing; I just wanted to get back into the mayhem.

The controls in this game are incredible, that's why I liked the action so much. I especially liked the lean function and the fast movement. You could pull off some really awesome stuff if you were good with the controls.

Also great overall design with no regen-health, multiple approaches and so on.

hmmm…just picked up a PS4 and I think this thread sold me on this game. And only $40 on Amazon atm...

Did anyone else have a lot of difficulty with using the weapon wheel?

Anyway, Wolfenstein TNO is the game Duke Nukem Forever should have been. It did remind me of a much more polished DNF is many ways. I know that sounds like a huge criticism but I liked DNF apart from the lack of polish. Gearbox should hire MachineGames to make the next Duke game.

One question before I get it, does this game contain monsters to shoot at? Answer in spoiler mode please.
No, it doesn't. There's huge dogs wearing armour but that's about it. Unless you count robots. There's plenty of robots from flying drones to walking tanks.

Let me tell you how this is going to work.

I'm gonna ask you one question.

You are going to answer that question in a way I find satisfactory, and if you do not...

I will saw your head off with this here appliance, you hear me?

I just started this game last night and it really does rule. I haven't enjoyed an FPS this much in a bit.
This is high praise, as far as I'm concerned. It doesn't even have the no-save set-up you usually look out for in an FPS; what do you think makes TNO work so well for you?

As for my current expectations, they're not too high, not too low. Going to be honest, Messofanego: you're too good at hyping stuff up, not so much at presenting a contrary opinion. More than a few GAFfers have claimed the opposite of some positives I keep hearing (usually regarding AI usage/complexity, fun of stealthing maps, or the story itself). But I'm excited to play the game in hopes that this will force Bethesda/ZeniMax's hand on polishing New DOOM, whoever's going to be finishing that up.

Also, do not judge this game after finishing first level. It gets much much better later on.

Nicest surprise of 2014 so far for me. Still need to get that one trophy for platinum :\

This. It is a retro game all the way through but shows more of its depth later on. When it does pick p and gives you more flexibility and freedom in terms of playstyles..... it is a beautiful thing.

Didn't expect much when i first played it, walked away pleasantly surprised and happy I gave it a chance.

I actually listed that as a positive, but I respect the perspective. :p

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
I fully regret not purchasing this from the Steam sale when it was $30. I keep telling myself to stick with the hundreds of games I already need to play but damn the GAF hype keeps making me thirsty.

thanks for this thread, it's really quite something. Starbreeze has always been one of my favorite devs so now I have to give this a try.

Played a couple of hours so far.
The soundtrack has a great touch, narration/characterization has potential and the level design is pretty damn competent [almost Dishnored/Valve level], but the gameplay wasn't really clicking me.

Until this very moment.
So much F.E.A.R.-esque goodness.

Let's see how it goes.

For all the game's flaws that prevented me from loving it as much as some of you guys, scenes like these are amongst some of the best I've ever seen. The tension built with the music, the pacing, the expressions... it's simply stunning.

The plot to this game is extremely ridiculous, if you can get over that there's a lot of weight behind it and surprising depth to the characters. I was more invested in the lives of these people flying stealth helicopters at full speed through tiny tunnels than I have been many games that set up their world in much more believable ways.

Aesthetically maybe a little, but the game's play nothing like each other.

The only thing that disappointed me was the lack of options in the bonus modes. I wanted big heads and low gravity, damn it!

Nope, I was talking about substance.
The impact of that double shotty against an armored enemy, until you brutalize him, reminds me the taste of F.E.A.R.'s gunplay.

But was just that moment.
For what I've seen so far, the gameplay is giving me mixedbag feelings. :)

Haven't played the game, but came to say amazing thread OP.

It's rare to have a love thread that explains so well and is actually full of love for the game and not half-filled with hating and shitting on other popular games to try to make a point / get some reactions.

Now I feel like I want to try this.

You don't consider Nazis monsters?

Wolfenstein TNO is my GOTY so far. Best single player FPS in a loooong time. Only flaw for me was having to look down at pick-ups a little too precisely.

Woke up. Didn't realised the thread would get this big, thanks for the love! :) Surprised and delighted to see many people convinced to check it out after reading the OP. I feel bad for not having put this up around the Steam sale, but I'm sure this will be on many deals as it's a great game no matter what price you get it at. 15-20 hours depending on how extensive/exploratory you are, plus the bonus 999 mode is a great reward.

One of the most chilling bits about Deathshead is when he mentions what it is in German:

It doesn't sound right in English.
Say it correctly.
Toten...kopf.

I can't account for every single perspective or opinion. I like to be mostly positive on things, and if some movie/game impresses me, I like to go on about why. I have read through the entire thread, I disagree with SJS who gave one of the few big contrary opinions here on a few things like the length (using CoD's MP to counter that both games have the same length; the SP of Wolfie is easily double of any CoD I've played until MW 3 and those games don't really encourage exploration or or sightseeing or playing at your own pace with backtracking) and AI (the tricks aren't new but the AI here is more believable) and level design (it's not an open world after all but it's telling if people want to explore the cities in Berlin up close because it shows how interesting the world is), glad he wrote it up though. If people find that stealthing is too easy or being able to pistol headshot noscope enemies from miles away takes away the tension or is a negative, all I can say is I prefer it because I like to stealth through most games that don't even allow it anyway.

ibmEwDiwniZ852.gif

There are quite enough sections where you have to go guns blazing and can't stealth through every level. It's a great balance.

You really should play it yourself to see if you find the story to your liking, it has a very different tone.

About enemies being dumb to dead bodies, well...

:p

I regret so much picking Watch Dogs over this game.I hate so much Watch Dogs,i can't even stand looking to that game, but i will buy this game this month.

I am the same exact way!!! OMG Watch Dogs MAKES ME WANT TO PUKE. It is not a game. It is Ubifactory shit. RAGE when I look at it OMG

Y'all people who chose Watch Dogs over Wolfie
U5mwcPB.jpg

Here is what I wrote down after finishing the game. It really is a gem.

Great write-up, more beautifully written than me :D

What I wrote in the OT. I was blown away, but considering that these are the guys/gals that did The Darkness and Riddick, I shouldn't have been. Loved every minute of it!

Another fantastic write-up! Bravo.

:D Everyone should read this, great review.

How was the game on ps4? Is the graphical difference on pc worth getting it for my rig over comfy couch gaming?

I bought a PS4 recently and rather than going with the other bundled games, I chose Wolfie cause that was a sure bet (plus what I played of Infamous and Watch Dogs were boring) of quality. It's one-to-one to high settings on a PC imo. It looks fantastic on a big TV at 60fps, as long as you're not staring up close on textures (with the amount of unique details on the environments in every levels, it's acceptable which is where I can see the advantages of id Tech 5).

Wolfengaf why you indoctrinating me? I'm really, really, really hyped to play this. Could get it on PC but I'm waiting, foreplaying with gifs, to make it my PS4 cherry popper, which will be happening in about a month now. Excite.

Foreplaying with gifs...kinky.

In my dream, I smell the barbecue.
I hear children.
A dog.
I think I see someone.
Someone I love.

These things are not for me.
Great foreshadowing from the very start for the very end of the game. It's what tied the whole Max Payne vibe going on.

So, I did platinum this game, got all the collectibles and health upgrades etc while playing through Fergus' timeline on Uber and just did the first mission again to get the save Wyatt trophy for plat.

Is it worth another playthrough to see Wyatt's whole timeline?

I chose Wyatt for my first playthrough because I found his rookie->leader shift and having to deal with the responsibilities more interesting, even if Fergus is one of the most fun characters I've encountered in a while. His absoluteness on not swearing or using the F word contrasted to Fergus is maintained throughout the campaign until one moment where even he has to let it all out at the "damn ugly fuck" Frankenstein!

Also, J is a great character you miss out on if you choose Fergus. I linked his cutscene in the OP.

I was more invested in the lives of these people flying stealth helicopters at full speed through tiny tunnels than I have been many games that set up their world in much more believable ways.

I'm sorry about your legs.

Don't be. I've learned how to fly.

dat triumphant music!

Yup, totally agreed with them. The ending for sure made me well up, in a bittersweet way because you can see this coming since the start of the game. Can't wait for the sequel if Bethesda allows them.

Wanted to mention for the last boss, I liked that the fire all over the place forced more sliding and jumping around. The boss is pretty manageable if you just know that you can stun him with a rocket every single time and don't bother shooting him while he's stunned, just wait. It takes about 7 consecutive rockets or charged LKW shots to take him down. He's a slow fella so use the movement and cover to your advantage.

Klaus needs some love. Constantly being referred to as "Johnny Cowboy" was so great.

His backstory is endearing. I love his commentary during the London Monitor boss fight. "Big explosion, USA-style!" The cutscene with him and Max in the helicopter, pulling my heartstrings kind of moment.

I love the juxtaposition of his room being right next to Max's, dead Nazi helmets versus toys.

might as well ask here

can you dual wield weapons in secondary fire mode? more specifically, can you do dual laser rifles outside of the
moon
mission?

Absolutely.

Dual wielding rockets, dual wielding shrapnel, whatever combo. I like having left gun be normal assault rifle, right gun to have rockets so I don't have issues with getting hurt. You can have left sniper rifle and right laser rifle (although there's not much use for it lol).

recently finished it, was great fun, much better than expected, but wouldn't call it GOTY material

the level design was hit and miss throughout the game and the last 1/4 of the game did feel like a bit of a grind (totally eliminating stealth completely and making you just kill waves of enemies before proceeding)

That scene was sooo chilling. They totally should've given Deathshead more screentime, the actor just completely knocked it out of the park.

OP,Uncharted released two years before dark athena. The link u gave only talks about athrna which released in 2009 using performance capture. Uso I think naughty dog used it before Starbreeze unless butchers bay also used it.

Tom Keegan directed the performance captures for The Darkness, which came out in 2007. So at least in tandem with Naughty Dog.
