That's ignoring intersectionality, women across all spectrums, LGBT and non-binary people, as well as Shia men all face extreme prejudice.

True! Many in the LGBT circles probably have more chance of being thrown off a rooftop or put in jail than just being told what they've to wear.

Washington Post posted she has been arrested according to state television reports. So, she definitely should have left the country before this. Hope she makes it out ok...

If she's a citizen of the country she'll be in a bad place now. If a tourist there is a small chance for intervention. As they say "Saudi woman" you have to fear the worst.

How much time will it take for this country to leave the dark ages? Centuries? What is it even going to take? KSA has a such an assbackwards way of thinking. Wahabbi-ass motherfuckers.

And now watch the case be burried and nobody in the West will give a fuck except for some muted half assed responses, while SA continues to get support from the West.

Hurray, white feminism. Where brown women are nothing more than political tools.

The minute the US stops propping up their military, the Saudi government loses most of their prestige and authority.

Hopefully the declining importance of Saudi oil can push a future US government toward this direction.

I'd love to see actual criticism instead of Bill Maher screaming "Muslim people hate women and gay people".

That's not criticising religion.
You are in a thread about a woman that will be punished for showing her legs.
And the legitimacy for this punishment comes from religion.
So what do you mean with "actual criticism" - this is pretty self-explanatory.

Pretty much, the only time there is ever pressure/intervention is if it's a foreign born citizen. If she's a citizen of the state then it will just go back to "so, how many weapons is it this week? how many barrels of oil are we getting?". This has gone viral online which is a glimmer of hope for her, but even then, expect the papers/media to be commenting long before the politicians will say shit.

This kind of surface level tautology would make Bill proud

I'm just tired of people in the Middle East continuously getting fucked over all because they were born in a place full of oil.

Saudi Arabia doesn't give a fuck, they will torture this woman, why would they give a fuck when they get a free pass from their Western partners?

Asking for trouble. She's fucked if caught.

When in Rome etc. She shouldn't have to worry but you don't mess with a government like that.

What a fucking diet victim blaming.

THIS is women's rights my friends - this lady needs to be applauded and be praised for her bravery.

Ancient anti women laws need to be changed, now.

I'm sure all the opposition right wing party will profit to say that getting migrants is to get this happening in Europe in a few years

Unfortunately even going viral is not enough. Raif Badawi is still being tortured and rotting in some hell hole Saudi prison :/

For you.

That would be because much of the criticism just focuses on a surface level analysis that just generalises every Muslim and fails to address the issue in depth and actually research it. Stuff like this is fruit of the horrendous Wahhabism ideology, but most Muslims don't follow that ideology. But politicians love to blame the entire Muslim world for everything, but they always fail to denounce Wahhabism and cut relations with Saudi Arabia, because they don't care about actual human rights. They only care about having a scapegoat so they keep getting elected, and money.

Hmmmmmmmmm

Not true, even though I dislike it, this isn't true. 3 girls I grew up with wore a hijab for entirely different reasons and even if I challenged them on what I then (during secondary school) considered as only a perceived choice the truth of the matter is their freedom to wear it here can be achieved via autonomous thought. Some girls have even said after converting and donning a hijab or burka they've felt a great sense of pride and even feel free from sexualisation during their daily life.

Some also say that R.Kelly makes them wear the tracksuits for their own good and because he cares about them.

This woman, arrested already, damn, hope she can get the fuck out of there.

And doesn't get Lashes.

Soon after you stop seeing shit like this:

Which should be after the US stop wanting oil.

...

Yeah, that's gonna take a loooooong time.

It's depressing when you realize that western governments don't give 2 fucks about basic human rights if there's money on the table. Saudi has oil so don't complain about anything they do to their people.

What would happen if these dudes saw actual porn? Would their heads explode? Or are they secretly okay with porn, and it's just women being free that bothers them?

Good on this woman, fuck the Saudi government and fuck Western governments for turning a blind eye to their bullshit just because it's profitable.

You're so backwards to call someone who agrees with you a victim blamer. The guy you quoted doesn't disagree with you, he's just stating the risk of what she's doing.

The truth is that when any kind of woman does something like there there is a huge risk associated with it, and she was arrested shortly after this. Who know what her fate will be. We all support what she did, but now her life is most likely in danger because of it. Maybe some people are just concerned about her well being??

If she is already arrested this quick, she is going to be flogged publicly as a way to ensure fear for any other women who want to try and challenge their laws. I don't think they will behead her, but I wouldn't put anything over the Sauds.

Saudi people are the biggest producers of home made porn in the Middle East. I don't think they ever caught a single person though, they hide their faces well.

Yes, we should tell them to let women in their country dress however the fuck they want. How is this even up for debate?

And what exactly do you propose "we" do about it? Protest has to start locally, and it's going to take more than just one woman. When thousands or millions of women actually stand up against it, and are persecuted because of it... then you have a valid reason for foreign intervention. Until then, there's nothing we can or should do. It's their culture and we really should have no say in it because you don't live there. I think nuns should wear skirts too, if they're under 50.

We can stop encouraging them by not handwaving them, putting them on human rights committees and selling them weapons. At least it doesn't send the message that we support this kind of thing.

1. The women who DO live there don't have any say in it either. This isn't Saudi culture, it's Saudi MALE culture.

2. I'm not saying we start bombing them or something. But maybe we make a concerted effort to get off fossil fuels, stop buying their oil, and stop selling them military hardware?

Would you have said the same thing about the apartheid?

What kind of stupid logic is this. No one is talking about foreign intervention. Women's rights are human rights and human rights transcend border. There's no such thing as " it's their culture so they would be allowed to oppress women and minorities and gays and anyone who's not a saudi sunni muslim MALE ".

Fucking nonsense.

You should really take a read at the EU veil ban thread. The amount of people saying it was their choice was staggering. No, it's not a choice, it's either indoctrination or fear, plain and simple. They wear it because if they don't, stuff like this happens.

Geez dude get over yourself. I was not talking about Saudi Arabia, where they clearly do not have a choice, it is the law to wear one. To think what was said there applies here shows how poorly you thought this out, and how reactionary you're being.

Anyway, I hope that woman is safe.

Well, she's officially dear as far as I'm concerned. I'll never set foot in SA and most other middle Eastern countries.

Saudi women have been fighting for their rights for decades, it's not a new phenomena, nobody ever gave a fuck about them. They continuously get suppressed, and all left leaning Arab websites are banned in Saudi Arabia.

Wasn't international pressure big reason for Japan to change their laws on pornography involving kids?

Distribution of child pornography was made de jure illegal in 1999 after international pressure from the United Nations, UNICEF and other international organizations
I'm not saying that we, as me and you can do much to change it personally.

Saudi Arabia is one of the largest consumer of porn in the world.

It should be of no surprise that these repressed bigots are secretly giant hypocrites, of course.

What the fuck are you on about? What does this have to do with anything??
