I'm not saying it's going to be easy. I'm just saying that it's something they are going to have to fight for. Your opinion, as an outside influence, means absolutely nothing. This girl that got arrested, could possibly become a civil rights icon, but only if more women follow in her foot steps. If not... then I guess wearing a skirt isn't as big of a deal to them as it is to you.

Which hotel in SA do you own?

Is that the responses here? https://twitter.com/alekhbariyatv/status/887298669594243074 That's the tweet the above articles are sourcing for her arrest.

Try following this hashtag if you want to read Saudi and/or Arab reaction:

https://twitter.com/hashtag/مطلوب_محاكمه_مودل_خلود?src=hash

The hashtag roughly translates to "We want her tried in court", thankfully most tweets in that hashtag are supportive of her, but the hashtag itself and the fact that it exists pisses me off.

Seriously though, I hope she gets out of this shit alive to begin with and then far away from that country.

Just the cause of the arrest is beyond asinine. "Suggestive clothing."
Suggestive for what?! Just fucking disgusting. And fuck your moral/religious beliefs when it comes to women's rights. Women's rights should always trump any personal religious/moral belief. This is not debatable.

She's suggesting bodily autonomy. Can't be having that

Unfortunately, I cannot read Arabic to know if this tweet is in support/satire or saying something negative/detrimental, but the blurring is Ned Flanders level of hilarious

It is good to see support like below go semi-viral

It's pretty sad in some ways though when you see said support it's often knowing it'll be coming from another country because anyone in the country probably fears for their safety to pass any comment against the government. With there being proof bloggers/social media commentators DO get arrested/locked up.

Indeed. Fear runs rampant through extremist countries like this. Hell, fear runs rampant through most countries. Even here in the US, there is great taboo when it comes to sex and human sexuality. Time and time again, we find ourselves very much in the infancy stage.

For all you always claiming the fucking Burka is a "choice" where is this woman's choice???

If she's detained I'm fucking fuming that is truly disgusting.

Here's a fact that Fox news won't tell you: what the woman is wearing here is not illegal in 21 out of the 22 Arab states..

Wow, it's only outlawed in one? So progressive! If she wore this in any of the other places the response would be the same. She'd be arrested for indecency or something else. I can't imagine the response would be "oh that's fine".

Saudi Arabia is a backwards country and this response to her wearing this is disgusting.

Never Forget:

The UN elected Saudi Arabia to be part of the Women's Rights Commission.

This is why the UN has always been and will continue to be a joke. They don't care at all about actually helping people. They only care about outward appearances.

Yeah, most of the support she's getting is from neighboring Gulf countries, or Saudi people that are hiding their identity. Nobody in SA is going to openly support her.

Saudia Arabia is perhaps the most backward place on the face of the earth.

This is considered progress ...

Nope, reality.

It's amazing that you made up your own reality and then chose to live in it. I live in the Middle East, women can wear what this woman is wearing from Bahrain to Lebanon to Egypt to Tunisia. It's not even unusual, those are typical clothes women wear when they go to a mall. Especially millennials.

Most Americans have distorted views on what life is like in the Middle East, in Russia, etc.

Could be the news coverage, could be that they see things from a moral lens and ignore facts.

It's easier to label countries/cultures as one thing and refuse to learn more.

I feel like most of them will be shellshocked when they actually visit the Middle East and realize that Saudi Arabia is just one country, and that it's the exception rather than the rule.

Women in the Middle East live in a patriarchal society, but we can't have a discussion about it in good faith when some idiot misrepresents the facts before we even start.

I agree completely. Wasn't there a thread on gaf not too long ago where someone traveled to a middle eastern country (can't remember which) and posted pictures and cleared up a lot of misconceptions. Maybe I'm misremembering and it's a thread that linked to a blog post. Either way, I recall a lot of posters being surprised and having a completely different view of the country prior to the thread.

All it takes is to read up on the subject a bit, rather than just basing your views on a few random news stories from time to time which obviously are going to show the worst.

People rather ignorantly spout out things like "The Middle East is a backwards shithole" and it always irritates me.

Wait...are some posters here seriously advocating for belief >>>>>>>> women's rights?

These islamic laws are mysognystic, brutal and terrible all around. These women have not taken on those clothes freely. Their minds are in prison due to the government and islam.

NOBODY should be so tolerant towards other cultures and religions that their rights are reduced.

Good for her. It's a very brave sacrifice she's made and I hope other women in Saudi Arabia follow her lead, so they're able to gain some semblance of freedom, even if it's only in what they wear. Maybe that will be the first stepping stone.

Has anyone posted the punishment for wearing "suggestive" clothing in Saudi Arabia?

(Also, I feel completely comfortable calling Saudi Arabia backwards. If they change their oppressive laws, then I'll make an effort to learn more about the country. But right now, "you'll be arrested for wearing regular clothes and won't be able to travel anywhere independently without a male guardian" is all I need to know, to give a big "fuck you" to Saudi Arabia.)

What an unimaginably big and strong creator of the universe that must be. Can make heavenly bodies like Jupiter and Betelgeuse plop into existence out of thin air but breathes heavily and needs defending by his male followers when he witnesses a woman's body with her legs visible, walking through dusty ruins at 40degree heat.

I dunno man 40 degree heat is pretty intense.

I'm not 100% certain, but lashing is a common punishment for defying religious laws.

There are dress codes everywhere you go. You think some women there don't look down on Western countries and how some women there dress? It's culture. It may seem ass backwards to us, and I agree, it is... but it's still their culture. Who are you to say it's wrong because you don't agree? If wearing a skirt and public is such a huge deal for her then she should leave and go somewhere where it's normal to dress like that. If the society as a whole feels that way, then they would protest it at a larger level and it might change. If sure it's going to change because of this thread, or because you think the west should intervene, that's about the silliest shit I've heard in while.

I’ve always found this cultural relativism to be so absurd. At what point do you draw the line?

If we were to find a civilization somewhere that believes in torturing and murdering every third baby born into the group, do we intervene? What if they forced the sobbing parents to be the ones to murder the baby? What if it was a seven year old instead of a baby, so that seven year old was fully aware of the world around it? What if the parents had to kill the child by tearing its throat out with their teeth while it was awake and screaming? What if their tradition instead was to torture and murder a child from neighboring cities every full moon?

If you can name any point at which you think it’s safe to step in and prevent harmful actions, your cultural relativism falls apart. As it should. Because at some point, the majority of the species agreed that certain actions are too cruel to be allowed. Including the treatment of women as breeding stock with only two rights: The right to squirt out babies for their husbands and the right to suffer/die if they fight for more rights.

So you can either side with the rest of the species and speak out against this bullshit or continue to coddle monsters.

Man, I'm living in Dubai right now and I see women in skirts all the time. You should check out the level of ignorance in Dubai threads. Gaf gonna Gaf, pay him no mind.

Saudi sucks though.

I've heard Dubai is fine, until something goes wrong. I've read that the best thing to do if a foreign woman gets raped, is simply for her to GTFO the country.

Going to be interesting to see how many countries like Saudi once their money runs out.

I went to high school in Kuwait, and that skirt length she's wearing was basically our school uniform. And yeah, boys and girls went to the same schools and were allowed and sit with each other and talk to each other. You'd be surprised at how many people are shocked to hear this, they literally think everything is like Saudi Arabia. It's not some liberal paradise, but Saudi Arabia is an extra level of fucked up.

It's a choice in a free country. That's the fucking argument people make. Not a single person say that Saudi Arabian women have the choice. You really can't distinguish between the situations?

Shit I guess voting isn't a choice either because some countries in the world don't have free elections then.

This is factually wrong. The attire this woman is wearing is fairly common in most middle eastern countries.

That's not what we were talking about and you know it. What happened to this woman is abhorrent, but we were talking about a shirt and a skirt, a shirt and a skirt are typical clothes for young adults in the ME.

I thought we were talking about SA specifically but ok.

Where is the line drawn between "culture" and human rights violations in your opinion?

How do you find someone like this if they don't want to be found. If she goes back to wearing the traditional garb, how do you even identify people?
