Does anyone else start writing out potential combinations to better help understand your options?

Here's my guess up to #2:

I was stuck on how many potential options I had and eventually stopped seeing new combinations. I use this trick when I get stuck. I start writing out the potential placement options to help jog my mind for solutions.

Obviously, once I saw AN _ E R the solution became apparent, or at least a potential solution.

While a 2 seems impressive, in this case I basically knew it had to be in the form 'et---' and there weren't a lot of options that made sense having eliminated 'a' and 'r'. So basically, it's my least impressive 2 ever.
