Morocco is my new favorite this world cup after this match. So glad the underdog prevailed in the face of the big bad Spain. Those penalties from Spain were worse than the ones from yesterday holy shit.

Welp, he will definitely come in handy later then.

Problem with Spain is that they are not flexible, tiki taka is the only way of playing they know. And its not going to change, they will just wait for their next golden generation even if that means no success for next 50 years, then win some tournaments and go back to this lmao.

Several national teams at some point in time or other get hooked for awhile on a certain way to play and just iterate on that. It's a somewhat pragmatic approach since national teams get way less training time together than clubs so players know what to do and newcomers get trained quickly. It's also a rigid approach that doesn't take into account the player skills needed to make certain sets work.

For the most part I agree with you, but a more flexible way to tiki-taka aiming at around 50-60% possession is working well for Guardiola. As for spanish national team who knows, national coach is an uncomfortable seat and sometimes doing what worked keeps the vultures at bay, for a while at least.

Shockingly though, despite the high possession seems morocco had way more dangerous attacks/attempts. I think you need to be pragmatic in the WC, too much possession with now risk taking is no better than parking the bus.

A massive team has been lost from the tournament nonetheless.

I agree with this, though I'd add that while the senor team only comes together every so often, a lot of the players go through the youth teams together. They are actually quite familiar with one another even though they don't play with one another in league games or what not - so the coach doesn't have to be so rigid in play style for the sake of expediency. They have options, and they have talent to take a new approach (and to rotate in players who fit that approach). It's risky business cause a team like Spain would rather lose in the R16 with a shitty game plan than not qualify or not get out of group by installing a unique/different approach. Too much pressure & pride.
