Got my riding right away last night, but I'm completely lost. I mean, I would have been lost had it still been 5.3, but now with 5.4 hitting today and being completely fresh as a 90 I am clueless. Anyone have a little more specific advice on gearing up a new character that isn't in a raiding guild? I don't mind pvp either (reached legionnaire on 3 chars and escorted 2 HWL on their runs back in the day).
I guess I just don't know what the path of least resistance is to get at least competent gear for general use.
Start doing scenarios, a few of those and you'll be in decent'ish gear, also do the world bosses.

Do the Isle of Thunder PvP dailies and your daily random BG (or more if you have time).
Farm the three mobs in Lion's Landing/Domination Point (for Horde/Alliance, respectively). Usually, these aren't camped and they each drop an item that gives 250 honor (more with perks/guild battle standard, around ~330), a 483 World PvP trinket (useful for getting iLvL up), and a chance at a Brawler's Guild invitation. The respawn time is about an honor. I usually killed them and logged back on in an hour repeatedly. I had full honor gear in ~3 days and it didn't really require a lot of time investment.
Alternatively, if you have a friend who is decent at PvP and geared, you can do 2s with them. It's 180 Conquest Points a win. I had a friend carry my fresh 90 Monk to full tyrannical a month ago in 2 days with a few hours played. This would probably be better in 5.4 with cross-server arena.
I can imagine. Timeless Isle will be crazy on a high pop server, especially with that sacrificial pvp thing

Isle is fun confirmed, already got helm/chest/cloak...

So much to do...I want to get in early on the Engineering 1-a-day grind so I can make Sky Claw but I don't want to fall behind on my Royal Satchel production, so it feels like a full 8 hour shift just finishing up everyone's farming before getting those schematic drops. And this is before I start on my Rogue's cloak/noodle cart business.
Maybe I should just forego sunsong for a day since that's almost 30 minutes spread out over all my alts.

Sounds too good to be true. Rather, I should say, 'sounds like blizzard will nerf this in about 12 hours'.
It's not - they're intentionally catching people up to where they can start LFR SoO raids.

Yep. I'm playing on my fresh 90 Boomkin (a week old) and so far I have him up to 488 ilvl, so I should hopefully be near 500 by the end of today and I can start SoO LFR. Its a cool idea ill give Blizzard that. It kind of feels like the dynamic quests in GW2 since you can just explore and find chests and or loot monsters. Of course there are dailies as well for timeless coins but thats to be expected.
Yep. Just keep running around finding chests, most give at least 1 Epic and one of the biggest chests actually gave me 2. No time dungeon grinding finally...Well you might have to do a little since some Valor gear is no obtainable with JP now.

Hey, I used to be on Stormreaver before I got tricked to move off!
The Isle must be a PvP warzone unless the population shifted something huge....which it might've given how many years I've been gone.
Alliance is pretty much dead on this server. I've been here since servers came up and I've seen less than 30 Alliance characters compared to probably over 1000 Horde characters
Supposedly the cinematic unlocks only after you kill Garrosh, they really wanted to keep this one a secret. The usual methods people used in the past didn't work but I am also reading that fan sites have an agreement with Blizzard not to publish the cinematics until SoO is cleared.
