It's a well-known fact that Miyazaki wants to do a more adult-themed film but has mostly shyed away from it because he almost feels obligated to make films that are family-oriented since they've become such huge events for them. Outside of the few scenes in Mononoke with Ashitaka shooting the arrows, more or less all of his films have been devoid of any excessive violence.
I think it was an interview with Toshio Suzuki that I read where he said Miyazaki wanted to use a pseudonym and do something outside of Ghibli where he could be more open with the content.
