Would Nintendo ever consider remaking Ocarina of Time using the BotW/TotK engine?

I would absolutely love a remake of Ocarina of Time using the same engine that Nintendo used for BotW and TotK. I know it's unlikely to ever happen but it would be amazing. The last time I played through OoT was on the 3DS XL. OoT is still one of my all-time favorite games. While I do get tired of all the remakes being made, this one I think would be worth it.

Who can say if they'd use the BoTW engine to remake Ocarina of Time but if a remake is being done you'd have to imagine some of BoTW's game design or philosophy would be carried into it.

The art style would not be that of Breath & Tears. I'd bet on something like Wii U's Zelda tech demo which evoked more of an idea of what Ocarina's visuals could have evolved into.

I would not expect everything climbable. Then again getting to high places barehanded might be a thing and then the Hook Shot makes it more palatable being able to latch on to almost anything but faster.

The progression would be more open than OoT originally was but not fully open world.

Modern physics like Breath & Tears.

Voice acting.

I would still be okay with this. There would have to be some game design decisions to make the transition.

I doubt. It would only make evident how outdated the design has become, or they need to retool the logic of the game entirely, which could be even worse.

Is BOTW worth playing? Heard it's open world slop
If like exploring for yourself, yes. If you like trying to do the same missions in different ways, yes. It's not such a thight design as previous zeldas, but it's really rewarding if you were on Zelda for the exploration.

It's actually a lot better than I thought it would be, but it's a huge open world with almost nothing meaningful to do. Kind of empty, it would have been so much better if there were more traditional dungeons.

Also, it has almost no music. It didn't feel like a Zelda game to me because there's just very little Zelda-y music. There's not even an "overworld theme" to get you in the mood when walking around. Some tunes are just downright weird.

But still, it's fun and quite addicting but with some strange design decisions. IMO it's extremely overrated but I would give it an 8/10.

Play Tears of the Kingdom instead, it's a very similar game but much better.

I miss the classic Zelda formula. I'm tired of the post-apocalyptic, deserted Hyrule both Switch games put me to sleep.

Bring back the quirky characters, memorable music, unique themed dungeons, key items etc..

I would love a 1:1 Remake of OoT. I think it could look way better than Botw, not having to be open world. That would actually get me to consider purchasing a Nintendo product again.

Most likely not.

I would like the 3DS version to be uprezzed and ported to Switch 2, but it's Nintendo so one of the following will happen:
1) they do just that, and both OoT and MM will be sold at $50 each;
2) they add 3DS to NSO, and we will get to play the 3DS version in all of its low-res glory;
3) they do neither and will keep offering the N64 originals for a yearly fee.

Almost ten years later and BotW still mindbreaks plebs, the sign of a classic.

On topic: no they won't remake OoT, too much work and they're too busy with the next mainline title. Who would even develop it?

Adding Minecraft to what is absolute perfection will only fuck it up.

Could the games use a remake/remastered treatment though, absolutely.

OOT is until today still the closest to perfection a videogame can be. It still flows perfectly, puzzles are perfect and with the limited moveset of Link Nintendo developed so much different game situation that you can't understand how is even possible.

Maybe you can remade it graphically (not like these horrible UE YouTube videos), but touch anything in gameplay department and you'll have a worst game.

If they do, I hope they upgrade the engine for DLSS and at least triple buffered vsync (since they don't want to activate VRR on dock).

I'd argue that MM is more impressive. It feels like the dev had access to a time machine and pulled design ideas from the future. It was years ahead of its time in concept and structure it's ridiculous.

I think it's great, fun to explore with great NPCs and story. I really enjoy climbing in the game for some reason.
An achievement considering the WiiU & Switch limitations. It's also the longest running Zelda universe with four games worth of continuous lore with the Musou games. I reckon there's room for more games in the BotW universe.

If you play it, get it on Switch 2 for the 60fps. If you emulate, play the WiiU version with CEMU. It'll give you 120fps with plenty of headroom on a high-end PC + additional features, then double it with Smooth Motion or Lossless Scaling to soften the impact of the 30fps cut-scene transitions (here's me assuming everyone's got a 240hz display).

Probably not. Redoing it with a new engine would probably fundamentally change the masterpiece. I thought it looked great when I played it. I don't need to replay it now.

Would be overkill. OOT is very much linear and does not require the sandbox systems like chemistry engine nor an engine that renders a huge open world, the OOT main hub is tiny tiny.

OOT is not outdated at all - it still plays great.

It absolutely does not need BOTW stuff in a remake.

I definitely don't want it to look or feel like BOTW/TOTK. I'd be interested in a Remake/Rebirth approach remake (fleshing out the world more, same locations but larger and brought to life with more detail and description).

If there's any generation that could benefit from remakes it would be the stuff from the earlier N64 and PS generations with super low polys and low rez textures. Nintendo barely ever wants to do anything but low effort upscales.

I just checked with my uncle who works at Nintendo he said NO.

He added "why remake what we can resell for a premium"

Probably the most overblown open world game ever created. It has it's charm, but it's all just a tech demo with no real substance. The "freedom" it provides makes it a boring slog.

But if you just absolutely love weapon durability taken to the highest degree of weapons exploding in the middle of fighting, I got some good news for you.

I feel like it you remade OoT with a newer engine the game would show it's age.
I would disagree. OoT was the Godfather of 3D lock on combat, which FromSoft has used successfully for over 20 years now. The dungeon design is still top tier even by today's standards.
However, the problem being, is that this is Newtendo we're talking about, so they'll water it down even further, if they even had the balls to do this.

Game's already as good as they get, no need to touch it specially at the risk of making things worse.

Hopefully not cause the BotW and TotK art style is fucking ugly. Unless they are able to make the art style very different with the same engine.

A remake of them should be based on their cool art style from their guidebook artwork.

I would really like it that Nintendo return to making Zelda games with actual textures, because I can't stand this look anymore.

I hate that game so much. I rebought it for SW2 and big mistake. I wanted to give it another chance but nope, I don't get the appeal at all. The worst part is the breakable weapons. Just for that it killed the gameplay for me.

A return to dark fantasy sure would be nice. Zelda used to have cool stuff but nowadays it's way too "safe" and babyfied.

It still has darker aspects like the bloodmoon, the corrupted dragon or the gloomhands but I agree they have to go back to the TP world. It's such an underutilized world while before BotW it was the most successful entry in the franchise and it has one of the most popular characters in the series with Midna. There's like half a dozen of games using the TWW artstyle and now 4 games using the BotW artstyle, it's time to go back to TP. Also bring back the Twilis, coolest race.
