I know Sony is expecting Horizon to be the killer app for PSVR2 at launch but does anybody get the feeling that nobody really cares about Horizon like that? It never had a passionate fanbase like GOW or TLOU.
The series has always just been there in the background. They are good games but I don't believe they will move many VR Units that Sony is expecting.

Horizon is the official turning point that Sony began playing their console base like a fiddle the way that Nintendo learned to do so long ago.

It's one of those IP that means EVERYTHING in the console space but is just another game if you ever had a PC in your life. Great graphics, just barely good enough everything else.

I don't think either game is memorable enough to be considered a system seller. The series is something you play because you have a PS4/5 rather than the draw like GT, TLOU, or Uncharted. Even MLB was more of a draw before it went multiplatform.

Nah. The first game was interesting but had major flaws. The sequel didn't do anything better except wow pretty graphics!

I had high hopes for Forbidden West but it shat the bed. I wouldn't buy a PS5 to play it. Infact I had a PS5 preordered and decided fuck it I'll just keep my PS4 to play HFW (and GT7...and GoW)

It absolutely is imo. Its obviously not to the degree of say a Mario or Zelda, but considering just how good the first two outings of a relatively new franchise are, it's popularity will continue to grow.

Not to mention everything else that is in the works (TV show, multiplayer game, highly anticipated DLC, the inevitable sequel etc)

It's quite obviously a staple in the PlayStation family now, and fans and Sony understand this.

Yes. It almost makes me sell my PS4.

I don't like it, but retailers and even Sony itself bundled the fucker with everything, so yes while the game has one of the most unlikeable characters in gaming only to be outdone by forspoken, It moves systems.

Largely on its graphics, which are excellent.

As much acclaim as it got and as much as I like it almost no one gave a shit at launch. It reviewed well and people were intrigued but it took awhile to sell.

Going all in? That TV show sounds very unnecessary and I believe it's a live action prequel which sounds like a bad idea. At least do a cartoon; makes way more sense

Kinda this...I'm still rocking PS4 Pro and don't really regret XSX instead. PS/XB is better than two PS of redundant utility.

Let VR steep for a bit as we get closer to a hardware refresh though and it's getting interesting. They have not nearly hit critical mass with games for that kind of upgrade from the Pro. If you were coming from OG maybe lol. Or really, REALLY love Ratchet and Clank/Demon's Souls.

I'm on board with system sellers for the most part, particularly Zelda, good luck finding Zelda on PC. Exclusives are becoming more rare, Horizon is going more franchise.

Some of the most beautiful games no doubt. But imo GG has yet to make a fun game to play. They just seem to focus on the tech, but the gameplay always seems second fiddle.

No. It is the Metroid of Sony. People love it but it is not a game with "power" enough to sell a system for the masses.
With only two games, the franchise has already sold over 30 million copies, so what are you talking about it not being a system seller for the masses?

What even would have been a system seller then? Killzone VR? Wipeout VR? Siren VR?

No. Horizon 1 and 2 are the sort of game I'l gladly buy and play if they are made available to me, but I wouldn't buy new hardware just to play it. Both games were a solid 8/10 for me.

Though I do think Call of the Mountain could have been a system seller if it was on the level of Half Life Alyx. The world is beautiful and giant mecha dinos seems like a concept tailor made to be enhanced by VR. Sadly based on the reviews it sounds like it's another short "experience" type game rather than a fully fledged AAA game.

For my sister, yes. It obviously has its own demographics and the sales prove it.

She literally plans to use her first paycheck to buy Horizon 2 and Dying Light 2.

The graphics give the series a certain level of prestige, but no I don't think it's a system seller.

For me personally the first game was fairly interesting. The second game looks like a generic Netflix production though. It's a huge turn off.

I'd say no. It is more like an additional reason to buy a system. I've only played the first game and thought it was really solid. The series needs something extra for it to have that system seller status for me.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Zero Dawn was IMO a fantastic game, loved it, 10/10. It didn't sell as well as they hoped, but I think Forbidden West was a great opportunity to break through. Unfortunately, they blew it. It's not nearly good enough, and in terms of a major franchise, has fatal flaws like an obnoxious and unlikeable main character. I think it is now firmly second-tier. Yet it will continue to get games and investment because the guy who chooses where to make the investments just happens to be the same guy who was in charge of the studio that makes the game.

For me, yes. I was a big fan HZD so
I bought my PS5 with HFW in mind.

Not sure I could convince someone else to buy a ps5 for it without letting them try the game.

No. Your "system sellers" are Spider-Man and God of War (edit: the franchises, after the crazy success of Ragnarok and the inevitable crazy success of SM2), also Grand Turismo but as a niche.

I wonder if things would be different if Horizon protag was a white man. I personally liked both games but I still think, a dude like Kratos or Nathan would sell a lot more than a ginger. No one watches DC movies for Batgirl. Tech-wise tho, HFW is what makes PS5 shine over anything. Its the best looking game to date, and that includes anything on PC. Excited to double dip when this hits PC.

I enjoyed the first one well enough.....I didn't buy a PS5 at launch....Horizon 2 released,I didn't buy a PS5 to play it.....so that's a no from me.

I'd say a game selling 20M+ on a single console is a system seller, yes.

If a game that manages 20M on one system but isn't a system seller, then what is the benchmark? 30M? In that case, only Spidey and maybe GOW are Playstation system sellers.

It is nice when the topic peak so early.

But to return serious for a moment, i would have bought a ps5 even to just play horizon 2 and 3 so in my case i guess yes, bit it's unfair because deep down you know that sony is gonna make other good games to buy, so it's really a fake yes, it's a scenario that doesn't really exist.

I think it's a good game to show off the hardware, but not a system seller like say a Zelda game would be. If I were to give an example.

That isn't what happened though, it sold 20m on PS4 and PC. And that 20m figure was reported 5 years after the game released, it's been dirt cheap for years. It's not a system seller if people are taking 5 years to buy it.

This isn't to say it's not a great success for Sony, but so is TLOU, Ghost of Tsushima etc.

I like the series. I'll rank it below Days Gone i would say.. a system seller? well yes, it's a part of collection of games that made me buy PS5 after enjoying then on PS4.

I wouldn't have bought a PS5 when I did, were it not for Forbidden West, so my answer is yes. I didn't buy the system for just that one game, of course, but that was the major reason I bought it when I did. The game itself was a bit of letdown (much preferred the first), but it did get me to pull the trigger on a PS5.

Call of the Mountain won't get me to buy a PSVR, though. There's a difference between "system selling" a PS5 and doing the same for PSVR. I think those are two different animals.

People constantly downplay the success and general enjoyment of Horizon - NPD has it as 9th best selling game of 2022 without counting bundles. Big enough to be a massive system seller? No idea, but certainly interesting enough to be a strong game to help push people into buying a PSVR2.

I wouldn't be shocked at all for Horizon CotM to do amazing sales only for people once again to be left scratching their head surprised how many others enjoy the franchise.

No, the game just doesn't do anything special and only shines with its excellent technical implementation.
However, the core of the game is quite boring and repeating.

A system seller has to offer me something that I can't experience anywhere else.
