And? A huge overhaul made it sound like the homescreen would have a different UI now.

the actual rumors never said anything about the UI of the homescreen changing - only the elements within apps: buttons, bars, etc.

I know it upsets the "tech elite", but Apple would be dumb to radically change the homescreen grid of icons. it would confuse the hell out of most people who buy these things.

If they ever change the grid in a meaningful way, it'll be small changes occurring over a couple releases, to ease people into it.

About two weeks ago I stupidly was eating ice cream in front of my MBP and some of the perspiration dripped off the container onto the trackpad and I didn't notice. Even though it's had plenty of time to dry, now the mouse moves on its own all the time :( Rather than pay $100 or so to get it fixed, since this is a 2010 model I think I'm just going to shelf it and get a 2013 model. I need some haswell in my life! Would love if they added some more innovations to this year's models... touch screen?

How would that actually be a good idea? It makes more sense to have touch controls where your fingers are (i.e. that giant area the trackpad covers).

Im getting weird vibes that the Iphone 5S will be announced at WWDC similar to how they did the Ipad 4 last year.

Last year during an event scheduled on what people thought was simply to announce the Ipad Mini, Apple came out of nowhere and announced the Ipad 4 which was essentially exactly the same as the Ipad 3 but just with updated specs (Processor and Camera).

Going with the trend of how the "S" series of Iphone have been mainly spec bumps, is it not entirely possible that Apple announces the 5S with the same form factor but maybe with a faster processor and camera similar to how they did the Ipad 4 last year?

Nobody saw the Ipad 4 coming because it was less than a year since the 3 and also because there were no leak of updated parts for the Ipad beforehand. I think the same could happen with the 5S

Ugh always this conservative bullshit in Apple threads these days. Small incremental changes isn't the only way to do things.

The 'iPhone is boring' meme is a mainstream phenomenon not only a "tech elite" concern.

If Apple revolutionizes the homescreen UI next week by making it simpler and better, people will buy it. People expect these radical improvements from Apple.

I admit it sounds awkward, but have you ever seen a kid try to use a desktop or older laptop? they always try to touch the screen. I think eventually touch will be baked into a lot of screen similar to how 3D is baked into most TVs, rather you use it or not -- at least it's an option. We already have many ways to control our laptops... keyboard, mouse, tackpad... touch is a natural addition. And yes, I realize apple doesn't have 3D screens, but they are forward-minded when it comes to touch.

If you add touch without modifying the OS UI to accommodate touch, then it'll end up being more of a nuisance than a positive addition.

Apple has never been in the business of adding "just one more option" to their designs. If they add it, it'll be something built from the ground up to support touch.

Or, putting it another way, I think there's a greater chance of apple selling an iPad with a keyboard attached than a MacBook with a touchscreen.

Can't you just get a Bluetooth mouse and disable the trackpad?

I really don't get the 'my phone is boring' shit. It's a tool that lets me do things, I don't need to be held enthralled by poking it (though I still am when I get to play with an iPad).

My desired change is only the ability to adjust brightness and wireless/network options (3G, bluetooth, wifi, VPN) without diving through menus.

Agreed a new calendar is not gonna cut it anymore or another useless feature that most people never use.

People don't use calendars on their phones now? Having the default calendar not suck might be nice (though am very happy with Calvetica).

First off, I just bought an iPhone 5 two days ago so NO.

Second, they can't announce a 5S now if they expect to announce another new phone in the fall. And it doesn't seem they'd announce a 5S now, and wait an entire year to announce a 6, if what you're suggesting is that they get back on a summer schedule for phones. Some of these new Android phones are looking so nice, I don't think Apple can wait until Summer 2014 to announce a completely new phone (an iPhone 6).

Plus, there have been no rumors at all that I've seen suggesting a new phone next week.

Horse Detective

Why the long case?
You know, for a while now I have been feeling like one of those people that just wants to move to android phones and give up this old OS. But at this point, I just want to see iOS get a nice big update. I have always loved it's simplicity, and I refuse to fall within the realm of people hoping for it to fail.

Get a Blackberry then.

Most people are entertained by their phones, enjoy cool features and they want to be delighted by it.

The best argument against a new model at WWDC is that Apple doesn't launch new iPhones without a new version of the OS. The OS isn't ready so no new iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 just yet. There's a slim chance Apple could launch a budget model at WWDC but it's a developer conference and that's not the right venue.

The last time this happened was 2001 and they still call it the most advanced OS on the planet. I don't think you get what Apple's about.

Saw a cleaned up version (artist render) of that 'leaked' screenshot, [EDIT] added iOS 6 screencap for comparison:

iOS6:
ios6-apple-icons-ogrady-600-600x349.jpg

To echo earlier comments, it looks like a Cydia skin, but a fake screenshot.

I like iOS 6, but 4.2 Android is a lot more user friendly at this point, and there's no reason why Apple can't 'steal with pride' and copy the good things, like quick access to settings (android), more swipe commands (Blackberry), widgets (everyone).

If they really lead with "Hey, a new flat icon look! New IOS 7! Oh, and also has other features...", Android's going to be laughing all the way to the bank. There better be some meat beyond the rather boring icon pack/reskinning...

Apple usually demos 10 main features of a new OS (You can see the iOS 6 ones here). They can get away the new look and feel being at least 1 of those features.

Features already rumored:
1. iOS redesign
2. iRadio
3. Flickr integration
4. Vimeo integration

Others will probably be:

5. Siri improvements/additions
6. Maps improvements/additions
7. iCloud/Photo Stream improvements/additions
8. Safari improvements/additions
9. Mail improvements/additions
10. ?? Maybe Notification Centre/lock screen if that doesn't fall under #1, or changes to Game Center so they can demo a game.

I doubt Flickr/Vimeo would count as two, or even one major thing. I think they're pretty minor. Like when they added Bing as a search option.

Case in point, Flickr/Vimeo were added to Mountain Lion but were not listed as the tent pole Mountain Lion features:
http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/

They were listed in the separate page for 200+ new features:
http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/features.html

Not trying to beat on Apple, but...

1) New Skin
2)- 10) Apps

That's not much to brag about, really. Especially given how much they're using words like "refresh" and "all new". Siri upgrades are welcome, let her off the leash already... Google is making real inroads there.

My bet is the real upgrades will be around new API support rules and a coalescence of iOS and OS X going forward. The rest: new coat of paint.

who is using those words? Did Cook say this at D11? I think a lot of it is just rumor chatter, not Apple.

I think homescreen customization is something that android users always harp on but I don't think it's a big deal for the vast majority of iOS users. the lack of a hidden "app drawer" helps make iOS more obvious. Apple isn't going to give that up easily.

Here's the best Android feature that I've seen that I want Apple to copy: actioning or expanding notifications within notification center. reply to a text or email within the NC. allow apps to embed more data in there so a swipe or tap can reveal an embedded twitter pic or photostream image without needing to go to the app.

The weather icon makes me sad because it basically means instead of making the icon live update like they should they just removed the misleading number. (It's like if the calendar didn't update but always had a date on the icon that was only current once a year.) Kinda makes me sad sad. I want to see the clock icon too.

That's been a pet peeve of mine as well, cursed weather icon!

Eh, I'd be cool with it if they added something like Velox: http://www.cultofmac.com/226389/vel...e-iphone-apps-from-the-home-screen-jailbreak/

Or if they still let the icon update with different types of weather but removed the number.

Unless the artist had other info, I don't see how the artist was able to interpret how the weather icon looked like from this blurry mess. I think the artist mistook the "Photos" icon for "Weather":

It looks exactly the same to me, a yellow sun with some clouds underneath. Photo app is clearly directly above it, it is a blurry mess but te weather app is relatively clear. I think the artist got it spot on.

Really? I can clearly see the Sunflower with 'Photos' right below it while the weather icon itself is just the sun with clouds underneath, like in the artist rendition.

They're pretty separate from one another.

Oh, I see that now. I really couldn't tell that that was the Weather icon. It just looked like a blurry white circle in a blue icon to me.

I bet those crazy irrational speculators are going to say that the icons crossing over with each other means cross-app communication.
