WWDC23 Apple Keynote - Code new worlds

Bull/hyperbole, just because Apple will be launching a non gaming focused AR device that has nothing to do with the future of VR
I think he has a mild point. Apple is notorious well known for refining the user experience, if they can't get it right who the fuck can.

Have you seen Apple? Ever? They never do something that no one else does. They just do what everyone else does, but better or in a simple, clean, and unified way.
I'm not talking about competing with other VR products though, I'm saying that this has no obvious purpose in anyone's life, at least not one that justifies that kind of price.

A TV that I can't watch with my family? Facetime where my face is a vaguely creepy CG approximation? A computer in my house? Apple isn't showing me how they're going to make these things better, and they're going out of their way to not show me the truly fantastic things that VR can actually do.

Obviously this is going to do the productivity and multimedia shit better than others have and better than Quest 3 will, but I don't think that productivity and multimedia are the dream of VR for most potential customers, they're very boring ordinary things that are done by 100 devices in our homes already. You might as well be showing me how it's also a clock. Who cares?

Jeeze that's going to be at least 5500 in Canada after tax lol

It's very cool, I'd like to see how close to reality it looks like in store, but obviously ain't getting that

Virtually everything they just showed it doing, you can do on a Quest 2.
Eye tracking and hand gestures? Video calls that actually show you and not a avatar?

I would bet the image quality on these will be in a class of their own as well. No more pixelated screendoor effects and a bigger FOV.

Well i'm impressed. Its everything what I'd like to have from a VR gear. Now someone give me that on a PC and I'l go to the store.

Quest 2 does do hand gestures. And the VisionPro is basically just a higher res, clearer version of the same shit.

I know people like to hate on Apple.. but this isn't a mainstream product. They're building their AR/VR development foundation. It started years ago with the AR crap. Eventually... after a few years... you will realize Apple owns the entire space. Everything will just work as it should.

Nothing out there will be comparable. If will fit your life like a glove.

Just my prediction.

The demo is rich in shock and awe tactics, but the lack of an input device like a keyboard or digital pen will kill it in the short term, for general work use.

Maybe in a future work environment where every person has access to ai's and the need to type is replaced by machine-generated content this kind of device will make sense.

For entertainment purposes and media/document consuming, it is a delicious luxury. It has appeal because it's the first vr helmed not to look like it comes from a dystopian hellscape and the features to avoid isolating the user are very thoughtful.

Well... You can't really play Android apps very well on Quest 2. I mean the functionality exists but it's hard to do and not a good experience.

Apple does have a leg up by having this huge app library, I just don't know if this is making that content better...

They said it will support Bluetooth keyboards. Pen probably isn't a thing that makes sense but yeah there are situations where the lack of controller is gonna be a big issue.

I know this isn't being sold for gaming primarily but the ability to navigate 3D virtual worlds is a pretty core function and that might be awkward with only gestures.

to be fair it sounds like a made up stat. Who is going around getting statistics on this?

Yea, not sure myself. I would have imagined at least 50% of people can touch type, taking into account the folks who are too young to type, live in regions that have little to no tech/improverished nations, and elderly who never grew up on the tech.

"in 2023, the number of smartphone users in the world today is 6.92 Billion, which translates to 86.11% of the world’s population owning a smartphone. In total, the number of people that own a smart and feature phone is 7.33 Billion, making up 91.21% of the world’s population. (Source: https://www.bankmycell.com/blog/how-many-phones-are-in-the-world)"

so 86% of the world owns a smartphone, but apparently only 20% of those smart phone owners can actually use them :p

Quest 3 it is then! 😐
What's fascinating here is that it is ABSOLUTELY a VR headset, probably one of the most capable on the market, but Apple is TERRIFIED to even speak the word VR. Like they're convinced the whole segment is toxic but they've sunk this much R&D into it, so let's pivot and pretend it's HoloLens.

On the one hand, they are focusing on things that the device will deliver, that won't depend on promises of games and metaverses that may not come, but on the other hand, "What if I had a computer and a big TV in my house" may not be the dream-like fantasy Apple thinks...
You are probably right.

To be fair, I can't touch type on a phone. I have to actively look at what letters I am pressing. Something about its spacing is just a bit too hard for me to memorize.

I could use the old 3 letters per number typing without looking though.

I was really hoping we'd see some minority report or Iron Man like AR hand movement/controls.

I think we're moving in the right direction. Give it a few more years, this is as good as your getting for now:

I would not buy that for 1000.
The displays in it alone are worth that, and in any other VR headset people would be cheering and in awe. Not saying this is worth 3.5k, but I do recognise this is some badass high quality stuff thats jammed into this thing.

The tech is amazing. And I think there are a lot of cool things. But I could not justify it for personal entertainment.

You can watch movies, browse the web, video chat.
2 Hour battery life. So I can't watch LOTR without a recharge? Fuck that.

ew, for that price I’d rather buy a 70” TV, a ps5, a psvr2, a quest 3 and approximately $1,000 worth of games

The tech is amazing, but like others had said, I got a real creepy black mirror vibe from the whole presentation. I can see a future where people live thier whole waking day strapped into these things.

Also the price is hugely off-putting.

MPX modules are def dead. They're using standard power connectors now, but without drivers to support it there's no expandable GPU game https://www.apple.com/mac-pro/specs/

Wonder if Apple intends Apple Silicon based expandable GPUs in the future. Or if they want to keep things under unified memory so you just get the biggest SoC you need.

Lets see
Dual 4k displays
M2 processor
Custom R1 processor
some 12 camersa
a bunch of sensors.
Yeah can’t imagine why so low how hours on the battery unless you want to strap a literal brick to your waist.
