WWE Raw drops to lowest TV rating in 18 years

Hypothetical question.

If you had 100M in the bank.

And the WWE were to go out of business. Popping 1.0 ratings. Attendance at an all time low. Lost their USA deal. Stocks plummeting. Would you buy it for 25M? You get their entire video library and a few contracts and probably have to sink another 25-50M to make it profitable and get a new TV deal.

Dealing with the egos and intrinsic assholishness of people in the industry makes this a no-go area. They'd smell the money and take you to the cleaners. Just ask the Carters for more information on that one.

Times have changed and there's more wrestling out there than ever before. Partly because of that fact, you can't really do long-term booking anymore without people getting bored and wondering when the conclusion is. The result of that is things changing quicker than they should. It's not ideal in the slightest, but that's just how things are now. You really think they can get away with a storyline that spans at least half a year without people complaining anymore? Just look at CM Punk's reign for a prime example.

And before someone says "well nxt does ____"; nxt is once a week, with a PPV network special once every few months, if that. It's as old-school as you can get, with very little exposure compared to the main roster, so it works.

TV serials are more popular than ever before, probably exactly because attention spans are getting shorter. TV executives would prefer every episode could stand alone for syndication purposes, but nowadays if they give viewers a stopping point, their attention will be stolen by the million other things fighting for attention. Every conclusion is a possible ending point for that viewers attention.

That doesn't mean you can do without new story beats to hold that attention, but that's different from ending entire storylines without any followup or link for the next storyline. If I'm just sticking around because I'm somewhat interested in Punk's story, and Punk's story ends with a complete halt at summerslam, and Punk doesn't even show up on TV the next day, it makes it a lot easier to just check what else is on, or what else is on the dvr, or what's on netflix, or facebook, or playstation, or the millions of other options we now can spend our freetime on at the press of a button.

Oh yeah. Even if I didn't know how to run the business side I'd at least get to run the show creatively how I'd want which would be a dream of mine since I started watching.

Raw is really really bad lately. I'm fast forwarding though 90% of the show. Even doing that to PPVs now. Never thought it get this bad.

Tomorrow night, Raw will be using these guys to go up against:

MLB Playoffs
Monday Night Football
New Star Wars trailer (to be played during MNF)

Look at all of those old dudes. Can't wait to see them stand in a ring and talk again. And regurgitate the same shit they've said dozens of times before. And not wrestle. And then disappear next week so it won't matter that they were there at all.

Brock is the only draw there. I smell desperation. I'm predicting a 2.0 rating. 2.4 at best.

It feels like they've barely advertised these old guys appearing the last few weeks. If this is supposed to be their bounce back show they could have mentioned it more.

They feel they don't need to provide "hooks to tune in next week" for casuals during their 3-hour marathon RAWs because they'll "find out over the Internet and on WWE.com".

It's an absurd line of thought.

wtf, that's not how tv works, that's the stupidest thing of I've heard in a good minute.

I can't wait until Raw breaks into the magic 2 million viewers rating, they deserve it.

I think they mentioned it once last week on raw.

they've been absolutely terrible lately of advertising big tings that are happening next week on raw. it's ridiculous.

hogan would have been here too if it wasn't revealed how big of a racist he is. tough times like these is when they drag out the geezers to get them a ratings bump.

I think they're just straight up fucked. The runtime, the PG rating, the production, the sets, and the announcing are all terrible. While the wrestlers may be better technically than before, the personalities just aren't there.

My guess is that instead of trying to rework the programs in any meaningful way Vince will panic and start to combine tapings and not do live Raws every week to save money.

No. However, he has been cleared to perform in ring, but they haven't used him for much (to his dismay).

These days he makes an appearance, says "WOO" a lot, and hams it up as the crazy old geezer.

Don't get me wrong, I love the guy, but he just needs to retire already and go on some vacations.

He's got ONNIT to sell

He's gotta pay those gimmicks that come in the mail son

How else is he going to pay his taxes, debts, legal fees and hundreds of ex-wives?

For what it's worth, Flair has always said that he's going to wrestle until he dies regardless of his financial situation. He loves doing it too much to quit. He also said he didn't want to do the whole retirement angle and the WWE basically forced him to.

You think the audience is dead after 3 hours (plus overrun) of RAW and SuperStars tapings? Just wait until that Corpus Christi crowd gets to sit through 6 hours in one stint. They'll be super-amped.

I watched the Lesnar interview w/ SCSA, and man, when they got to the 'Taker stuff at the end, Lesnar said "I'm over it." then backtracked and did the "shoot" angle.

You could tell the dude literally has zero interest in this angle. They had a great thing w/ Brock, literally building him into this unstoppable force. How big would it have been for the company to use that to springboard the next true star in their eyes to be the one to defeat him. Its not that often you get an end level boss the caliber of Lesnar, but Taker had to get that win back.

Its kayfabe bullshit that Vinny Mac has to have to protect his guys to this day.

Brock isn't over the angle, he just doesn't care. His feeling would probably be the same whether he is feuding with Taker, or Cena, or Rollins or Bryan or whoever. He made it clear he does what he's told as long as the money is green. He doesn't give a shit about the politics of it all. Just pay me and tell me where to be and who to beat/job to. Vince is probably going to have to pay him 6 figures just to get him to show up to the Hall of Fame ceremony in 5 or so years.
