X-Men Apocalypse Review Thread

But is better than Thor and Batman & Superman all watching Batman and Robin at the same time?

X1 is bad
X2 was great
X3 was fox's SpiderMan 3

First Class was A+
DOFP was Pretty okay alright
Will have to see Apocalypse
Deadpool was Chimmichangas

Third film in a superhero film trilogy being the worst of the lot is sort of a tradition barring Civil War and Iron Man 3, so why not I guess.

Just scanned through the thread. Divorcing all the doom & gloom reactions from posters, and reading the reviews, I'm kinda surprised at the initial reaction, honestly. It's sloppier than DoFP, yeah. Took too long. But it's also the first of these X-Men movies to really embrace the soap opera and melodrama at the core of X-Men, and there's some real enjoyment to be had there.

I mean, yeah, you end up with Oscar Isaac doing not much but letting his eyes glow and spitting portentious, multi-syllable bullshit in stentorian, computer-augmented fashion - but isn't that kinda what Apocalypse is? Isn't that kinda what he does? I dunno. I didn't have much of a problem with it, I think I was more or less just surprised at how willing Singer was to finally stop apologizing for making X-men movies and just make a fuckin' X-Men movie.

It's not as good as First Class or DoFP, no. X2 is still the best thing he's ever done with this series. But this really does seem like he finally got to make the X3 he was hoping to make before Superman came calling and he wandered over to Australia and got lost in a cornfield of his own making.

There are positives and negatives to his having made a bigger, much better X3, of course. But I feel like on this picture, the good outweighs the bad by a wide enough margin that I would recommend it pretty easily.

And like I said. There are more X-men moments in this X-Men movie than most of the other X-Men movies combined. There was some shit I was absolutely not expecting them to handle accurately at all, even as it was happening.
Now this is something that actually pique's my interest on the film. The one thing I've been waiting for is the films to finally embrace the source material in some way, especially in regards to costumes and story.

I still feel like the whole timeline is a mess and the whole Mystice focus is ridiculous since she's supposed to be a major villain but I'm curious to see if the films are going to head into a more lighter direction.

Am I disappointed that critics don't love it? Sure, but I'm not just going to assume it's trash. There are positive impressions out there people, it's not all doom and gloom.

I wasn't expecting a breezy experience where all the younger X-Men hang out and actually appear to be friends when the stakes are so high, but I wish Singer wasn't so apparently allergic to the idea..

Oh well. Also, Magneto there's still good in you. No Charles there isn't. Yes Erik I know there is.

Apparently the mall scene isn't in the final cut.

Unfortunately it looks like the trailers were true and Mystique really is the center point of the movie.

Final battle is supposed to suck too.

Aw hell naw.

We already know the costumes don't.

Kinberg is the Kevin Feige/Zac Snyder of Fox Marvel. Singer probably didn't have much of a choice over the matter.
That's true. Hopefully he's only strictly producing the next one and not involved in writing it.
I assume it won't be appropriate until Assassin's Creed, which is his baby through and through. If that fails critically and commercially, then it's time to strike up the Simon & Garfunkel.
It could do well critically but opening it so close to Star Wars seems like a dumb move.

It's actually kind of ironic, isn't it? Singer spends all this time trying make the X-Men palatable to main-stream moviegoers, leading to a series of films that are comercially and critically successful but gain scorn from many die-hard comic fans, then, after years of other films opening the door for much more faithful comic adaptations, Singer decides to cross that threshold and give the fans what they want, and winds up getting a film that is being slammed by critics and is tracking to be a BO disappointment.

Taken as the next chapter in the series, Apocalypse is an undeniably fun and entertaining adventure and does a pretty good job of establishing Xavier's next class.

What makes X-Men: Apocalypse so exciting isn't really any one thing but rather its cohesion, its storytelling verve.

First Class is the bes X Men movie and I wish Matthew Vaugh had stayed with the franchise and helmed the entire trilogy.

It seems the trailers were right for this one. I'll watch it when it's on Netflix or something.

Is Fox still paying Mark Millar to be a consultant for these movies?

He was a consultant in name only and has nothing to do with the day to day workings on these films in any stage of the process. Fox seemed to quickly walk back their plans to have Millar be their pseudo Fiege.

Well, at least we aren't talking about Thor 2 or Iron Man 3 again.

I think I preferred both those films to
Civil War
.

Genuinely.

Unfortunately it looks like the trailers were true and Mystique really is the center point of the movie.

If this film really is centred around J-Law's Mystique I bet McAvoy and Fassbender were fucking raging.

Get out of here with this "Give the X-Men back to Marvel!" crap. At most, I'd want to see Deadpool make a 30 second cameo in an MCU movie. That's it.

We could start with

- The Incredible Hulk
- Iron Man 2
- Thor
- Captain America 1
- Iron Man 3
- Thor 2
- Avengers 2

As a few good reasons.

Seemed fine to me actually. Granted they weren't as good as Marvel's best, but they were pretty fun movies regardless (haven't seen Iron Man 3 though).

I think they should really work towards getting all their franchises back, it would be quite awesome for that whole MCU of theirs. But I'm guessing that won't be possible for a long time to come.

I don't think it will ever get handed over but it would be fun to have Fox collaborate with Marvel like Sony is.

We already know the costumes don't.

What do you mean? Because from what I saw the costumes are quite faithful.

Don't do this.

Farm scene for life.

The farm scene is probably the worst part of it.

I don't feel super-comfy dropping spoilers out in the open, even behind tags, considering this film still doesn't come out for a couple weeks. Is there a spoiler thread or something somewhere?

Couple of weeks? When is it out in the US then? I go to see this on the 17th.

Was Ottman's score good at least??

30 minutes of CG onslaught against basically canonfodder robots, with no suspense or real fear that anything might happen to the heroes on screen. Not to mention the terrible editing. It feels absolutely pointless.
There are dozens of us.
I'm with you bro
+1

AoU was good.

Don't be shittin me, man. Are you saying it's worse than all mainline X-men films barring X3?

After watching the last few trailers I had a sneaking suspicion that this was going to be a disappointment...

Sounds like a Sunday afternoon matinee to me.

Yeah, that seems to be the shape of it at first glance, doesn't it?

I'd say he still holds himself back from going full-bore (although again, there are a couple instances of set-pieces and character bits that had Yipes shouting "X-Men!" inside my head) and the movie is one of the sloppier bits of filmmaking I've seen from him.

But I feel like this could be a situation where all of Singer's reticence to cross that rubicon ends up being reinforced by the critical reception, such as it is as of yet.

Is this the same director as the last one? That was maybe my favorite comic book movie

I saw this immediately after Winter Soldier just wanting to get it over with.

The movie starts with the X-Men getting destroyed and completely being wiped out. For the first time in a comic book movie, perhaps since Sin City, did I feel the enemy had the heroes by the balls, and that it was fucking nasty.

I think the setup made me engaged in the film, and the film kept me surprised. I also thought First Class was better than the first 3 xmen film as well.

Xmen 1 and 2 are a blur for me. I remember them as decent action filmes but not memorable. I remember the 3 one as garbage. I remember the two Wolvie movies as disappointments that failed Hugh Jackman. They were poorly done.
First Class and DOFP are... They are a much better universe. Xavier and Charles have a good bromance.

But at the same time.. Another film like DOFP? I think I might watch the trailer for this instead:I
