Xbox asks for backward compatibility suggestions

I just love how the XBox store's menu does not show if you own something until you click on it.

That is really obnoxious, Microsoft.

Raging Blast games are decent.

Burst Limit aged horribly and feels bad to play. A 60fps bump might help a bit, but unfortunately the gameplay itself is bad, which is a shame because the RPG-like loadout mechanics in it are actually kind of unique.
The aid system I will give you, but the more streamlined combat in BL was good enough to be adapted into the shin-budokai games on the psp (which were honestly my favorite of the standard budokais)

PGR 3 and 4.
Nearly 0% chance of ever happening.

PGR1-4 would be my most requested titles alongside the original Forza Motorsport and Forza Motorsport 2 but racing games in this vein won't ever be brought back same with the old Gran Turismo titles showing up as Classics on PS.

Not only would they need to relicense every single car but they would also need to relicense all of the music or change it all which wouldn't go very well either.

And people thought all games would be BC on helix out of the box . . .
What? This is completely different.

This thread is about a website to suggest new backward compatible titles. This has no bearing on Helix being able to play the already existing library.

And people thought all games would be BC on helix out of the box . . .

I don't think anyone thought that about X360 games, they've already said most of it is stuck in licensing limbo.

Helix will, however, allow PC emulation apps to run which will greatly increase it, if all goes according to rumor.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this already but they should bring back Afterburner which was an XBLA exclusive, - only available online anyway...

What ?

The expectation is that currently BC titles will carry on. Not more of them. But more of them would be appreciated.

If current BC titles don't carry over, that's a no buy. And they can't get away with this, because they have historically set up this expectation about BC themselves, and both Sony and Nintendo have been giving suit with PS5 and Switch 2.

But I am not worried, pretty sure Xbox will work wonders around this. This is where they are the best.

They said 4 generations of backwards compatibility. I never thought that just meant the current BC list plus whatever they can add in time for launch. Classic over-promise and under-deliver.

They need to nail this bit. I'm buying it to sunset all other Xbox consoles. To have one box that does it all.
If I still need to plug in some old junk to have access to everything then I won't buy it, then it solves nothing. I already have a PC in the living room, and a Series X. What would I actually get from Helix that I don't already have?? 🤔

Ya'll really need to come up with better lists. I'm seeing a lot of stuff that's already compatible , available on PC, or has absolutely zero chance of coming due to licensing.

Xbox 360
  • Amped 3
  • Birds of Steel
  • Condemned 2
  • Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom
Xbox
  • Amped
  • Amped 2
  • Blinx 2: Masters of Time and Space
  • Deathrow
  • Jet Set Radio Future
  • MechAssault
  • MechAssault 2
  • Tenchu: Return from Darkness

They didn't add any games it's been 5 years, i even think they officially said they were done at one point. I don't know why they pretend they will take suggestions into account. Or perhaps they're planning some things but you have to announce it first.

probably Ubisoft not being interested in supporting the rest of the trilogy.
but PoP 2008 and PoP Forgotten Sands are compatible funnily enough
Fogotten Sands deserved it. It's an underrated PoP game that attempts to feel like the 4th entry for the PS2 trilogy.

It's a shame it released so ridiculously late within it's console generation.

The fact that Condemned 1 is there but 2 isn't a tragedy. I want some bear punching on current hardware.

Give us proper BC support for all Xbox One MS exclusives- Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, Forza Horizon 3, Dead Rising 3, and Ryse Son of Rome.

Add 4k support to all original Xbox and Xbox 360BC games. It's 2026 and people don't want to play games at 720p anymore Microsoft. If a game is good enough to be put on GamePass it is worth adding 4k support for.

Max Payne 3 in 4k instead of 720p should've been a no brainer.

Figure out how to get FPS boosted games to run at regular settings on Series X instead of forcing us to use Series S settings

I mean... it's basically guaranteed that all Xbox One games will work (except for Kinect stuff of course)

all OG games already get a 16x res boost up to 1920p (depends on the original resolution it ran at). they could boost that further I guess, but it's not like it does much for those games beyond that.

as for 360 games. they'd need to actually make a proper Emulator to boost resolutions on all of them I'd imagine 🤔. og Xbox is already emulated through 2 layers (it runs the emulator used on 360 through 360 emulation...) so there they can just increase the res by default.

that's not a thing unless the game has a specific issue with FPS boost.

most games run One X settings + FPS boost, the exceptions to that rule usually have a weird dynamic resolution setup that would need to be patched by the original devs in order for it to work with FPS boost.

Titanfall 2 for example has a dynamic resolution that goes above 4k. the devs are quoted to have found instances of reaching 6k resolution on One X in very light scenes, but the upper limit is probably 8k or more.

their engine has that option in their PC versions as well. they call it dynamic super sampling, and it will increase the internal resolution as high as it can while maintaining the FPS target you selected.

in the case of Titanfall 2 on One X that target was set to 60fps by the devs

this means Titanfall 2 on One X is programmed to increase its internal resolution without any upper limit, until it detects that it is about to drop below 60fps.

and that of course means that if you increase the Vsync lock from 60 to 120 fps by injecting it through Direct X, the preprogrammed FPS target that the devs set still remains in place regardless of the changed vsync lock.

running One X settings in that game would therefore mean that you'd end up with a game that constantly hovers just above 60fps, while increasing its internal resolution to the highest point it can while maintaining that framerate.

other titles that fall back to the One S profile have similar issues with dynamic resolutions.
they'd need to find a way to block the games from increasing their resolution beyond a certain limit in order to fix this, and I doubt that's possible without modifying game code

And if the current two devices already have a spot and I don't need to save space?
What do I get besides a worse PC and a console with the same BC?

The continuation of your existing library on a future proof device. And who knows Asha might start making console exclusives again.

What?

Just add everything. Nothing to suggest here. It should have entire library without any exceptions.
I remember Microsoft addressing this at some point before. There are multiple reasons this hasn't happened.
You have the occasional game where compatibility just doesn't work right no matter what they try.
Then there is permissions. For example: if EA obtained the Simpsons license for The Simpsons Arcade on the Xbox 360, they don't necessarily have the rights to distribute it in the Xbox One. Or if Ubisoft made an Assassin's Creed game for the Xbox 360, they can flat out tell Microsoft not to make it backwards compatible on the Xbox One or Series X because they plan on bringing out a remastered version and feel BC would hurt sales.

I'd love to know what the statistics are for the amount of time the average player spends playing BC titles, at a guess I'd say it's probably less than 1%

Whole thing seems like a massive waste of time

For me, it's generally why my Xbox gets turned on, and the same goes for my wife and daughter too and they're not even nostalgic for the shit the way I am.

Older games were simply better, on average, than they are now. Is what it is, and that gives this program massive value for many of us.

Well, you'd be wrong becuse at some point they did put out data that showed how many hours were played on BC games. I'm sure people buy some of them not realising they are old games becuse they look as good or better than some of the slop that fills the store.

If somebody wanted to play Daytona USA as many people do, is there any need for a native port when a perfect version exists on BC?

BC games make up nearly 100% of my play time.

New games suck.

I'm currently playing through Knights of the Old Republic 2 from a disc I've owned for over 2 decades. After that I'll probably do another playthrough of Jade Empire and sprinkle in some Asuras Wrath inbetween. It's nice to be able to play these things away from home as I can't bring my desktop with me when I travel for work. It's never a waste of time to give a userbase MORE variety in what they can spend their time on playing.

Not only that, but many games have multiple full versions. I own Halo: MCC but the store would be happy to let me purchase it again.

welllllllll... not quite, and therein lies the biggest issue of their current backwards compatibility.
you don't actually play anything from your disc. no pice of data from that disc is ever installed or read while playing the game.

the disc is simply a DRM key that allows you to download a modified version of the game and start the downloaded game.

if Microsoft is actually serious about bringing back their back compat initiative, they need to actually allow you to play your own discs without any download required.

I am playing from the disc I own and have owned for decades. Doesn't matter if it's downloaded or not. I don't need to purchase the game again after I already did a year after it first released, now in 2026. It would be nice to be able to put a disc in and just play, but it's not feasible at all and you'll never have that be fully avaliable on any platform due to the nature of how games were developed for a certain platform, and how hardware has changed over time.

it absolutely matters. the day they decide to shut down the servers, it won't work anymore.
if you have internet issues, it won't work anymore.
and for some games it actually has lead to other issues. for example, it's currently impossible to play the german version of Pandora Tomorrow, because the console will download the English version of the game not the german one that's on the disc.

it is a bad substitute for backwards compatibility that was sadly a necessary compromise on the underpowered dogshit CPU of the Xbox One.

so I take it you never in your life heard of the concept of emulation?
how do you think the PS3 plays PS1 games? because Sony developed an emulator to read your PS1 discs and play them.
how did the Xbox 360 play Xbox games? by reading the disc and playing them through an emulator.

and that is exactly what Microsoft needs to do now that they aren't working with the worlds worst CPU anymore, and to actually have comprehensive and fully functional backwards compatibility. free from server dependent downloads, free from licensing issues limiting the back compat library, and free from issues like the one that has been going on with Pandora Tomorrow for 5+ years now and was never corrected.
