Xbox Game Pass has more than 10 million subscribers.

How is the gamepass as a service?

A) lag\response time ok?
B) Does it display 4K?
C) Can you play online with other xbox live members for games such as fortnight, soul caliber, racing games etc?

I want to get it, but I am saving up for Xbox Series X and PS5 at same time.

Great news for Microsoft.

Think you are confusing game pass with Xcloud. Game Pass is all downloaded and played locally.

Xcloud maxes out at 720p I think at the moment. Latency is there but it tends to be pretty good for me.
The games are the same version you would play as if you were playing locally so every online feature works.

Itś not streaming, only download. That's project xCloud what you mean...

Oh you mean that thing that was already becoming a common thing before the current gen of consoles?

Yeah game pass encourages it. Not the entire industry.

Got it.
Yes, that thing that was popular in Mobile gaming, and is now becoming and more prevalent in consoles, especially on the Xbox.

Not exited for that. Gamepass isn't helping. Driving the costs of games artificially down isn't helping.

I have not bought any micro transaction or loot box. currently playing "A plague tale" and not a loot box or transaction in sight. again there are loads of games that aint on gamepads with loot box or transactions so its happening with or without gamepads
Plagues tale isnt every gamepass game. It's an indie game so I'm not sure what your point is

Sony first party games have MT as well as M$. Game Pass or not it was/is becoming a thing. Saying game pass is helping makes no sense as all of the games on GP are also available for purchase full price as well as other platforms.

The devaluing games argument has been debunked many times. There is zero data to support it.

And my point was Gamepass encourages games to rely on mxt becuase the introductory price is so much lower. The economics of GXP encourage game design that is shorter, multiplayer focused and heavily monetized.

Plagues tale didn't start off as a Gamepass title, so it isn't relevant to my argument.

Sony is a large publisher. I am sure they have released games with MXT? Why is that relevant to Xbox?

The majority of Sony first party output is still large, 60+ purchases that often place single-player content over multiplayer content.

a lot of games on there don't start out as gamepass games?

All games on there are available retail day one so its not like there are only games designed for gamepass only. End of the day all of what you said was happening before gamepass and will happen regardless of gamepass. laws are tightening on loot boxes to so they will get less and less

Cool, if you count the small independents like Monaco and Holy See as countries I guess but even the pope gets access to PSNow. They just aren't listed. Others can also easily get access, It isn't geoblocked as far as I know. Gamepass supports what, 18 countries as well?
No, we can't. If you don't live in a country which is listed or, more precisely, you don't have a CC with an address in one of those countries, you can't even get a free trial.

Not sure why all that's important. Somebody said PSNow 'isn't available in Europe' and I said 'it is available in Europe'. I know it's not a country and I know it's not all of Europe. I hope it officially comes to yours.
I don't know if I'd like to have it but I'd like to try, at least, and have an informed opinion about it. On the other hand, XGP is available where I live and thus I could try it. A point for Microsoft.

I'm glad it's successful. I've been using it far more than I ever expected. There's a surprising amount of games that I didn't already own, or hadn't yet tried.

Again there is zero data to prove this. The economics of game pass have not changed the design of any game. All the trends you speak of were already happening long before Game pass. FUD to the max

Microsoft's focus has always been on multiplayer games. Long before gamepass. saying that it's now becoming more prevalent on Xbox because of Game Pass is flat-out wrong.

just like every other publisher in the industry including Sony when there is a multiplayer aspect there is usually some type of DLC or microtransactions.

I would argue MS own game output in the last few years is proof of this. From sea of theives to gears 5, we've seen MS embrace MTX far more than Sony and Nintendo has.

Also I would point to the mobile market as well. The idea that monetization doesn't affect game design is silly. We directly saw how drastically games designed on iOS and Android were changed as soon as app stores introduced in-game subscriptions and tokens to buy. F2P, MMO's, hell the entire sports genre in the past 5 years has proven that to be true.

Monetization very much matters, and if every game is 10 dollars on release I think that will make an impact on how publishers want their games to be made, designed, marketed and sold.

Also, let me be clear. I am not saying gamepass invented microtransactions. I am not sure why you guys are making that up. I am saying gamepass is artificially lowering the price is an incentive to embrace that model. This is not a controversial theory.

So out of the 100+ games on Gamepass how many have MT and how many of those MT are Cosmetic only?

I'm only asking as you are the one making the claim and it's only you right you provide data

Microsoft really should throw in a years Gamepass in with the XSX. It would hook people willing to spend $500 on a new console, but are worrying about having little money left to buy some actual games.
Please no! I don't try the free trials they offer me now.
Give me XBL or a game packed in instead.

I signed up for GamePass for a dollar a month and I have kept it, now I'm paying $15 a month. I bet more than most are paying more than a dollar. I think its a great value and I like having Xbox Live wrapped in the package. I could see this bringing in 50-100 million a month. Once Xbox Series X launches, I'll have Halo ready to go day one.

Again you can point to Microsofts focus on multiplayer versus single player as a indication of why gears 5 and see if thieves are monetized way that they are. just like every major publisher in the industry, multiplayer focus usually results in some type of cosmetic microtransactions as well as DLC.

Microsoft does the original Xbox has always been focused on trying to get multiplayer involved as they invented XBL.

Gears 5 is also a poor example in my opinion as they drastically stepped back the microtransaction nature from gears 4.

To say that Microsoft has embrace it more over Sony and Nintendo implies that they are designing more multiplayer games to extract more revenue due to the current climate which is false.

Comparing it to the mobile market doesn't make a lot of sense. Completely different market and customer base. The barrier to entry is also much different along with the economics of the ecosystems being dramatically different. A storefront on what is considered an essential item these days in a phone can't compare to one that is purely based on disposable income.

Nobody said monetization doesn't matter or that Microsoft invented the microtransaction with game pass but you are implying that because of a subscription that it's devaluing games which is "new." Which again there is zero data to prove.

You are the one claiming things like it devalues games and will change how games are being developed, which again was already changing long before game pass.

Saying that lowering the price of entry will be the issue here is again unfounded. The only comparable industry would be film as they still have many markets with many different methods of obtaining content (digital, subscription or via disc) and that hasn't devalued anything.

I was doing it for years some of these services are so cheap who really notices at most £10 going out of there bank? I go months without watching Netflix but still pay for it, same with amazon, and you never know when you need next day delivery so cancelling it would be pain. the only reason my gamer pass sub ended was because i needed a new card, but for months i was paying for it even though i was also paying for the PC version and not using either. Playing games and watching TV isn't something you plan so never know what service you going to be using, so really shocked if theirs not millions of people doing this with a variety of services.
I dont know, i check my bankaccount every month to check what going on on there and check if i pay with my bankcard the amount wrote of is correct. And if i can dump some services i dont use anymore. I want to have full control of my money, and when i can lower my monthly payments i do that in a blink of an eye....but thats me.

Yah whoops sorry! haha! I did confuse it with project xcloud

Well I think its great that Microsoft is offering gamepass PLUS xlcoud, but with all these subscription services, can you get an all in one subscription that includes all of the following:

A) Gamepass For Download
B) Xcloud for gamestreaming
C) Xbox Live Gold so you can play online with other Xbox live members

and how much would it cost?

Probably Xbox GamePass Ultimate, as far as it seems. Which is 15 bucks/month. We still don't know the xCloud pricing.

Which also gave PC GamePass.

From what it seems, Xcloud might not "cost" anything as long as you are using your own library. It was just confirmed that Game Pass and Xcloud will be a thing meaning with an active sub you will be able to stream GP library.

While it's no doubt a good value, I honestly prefer something like Humble Bundle where I get to keep the games. I never know when I'll feel like getting around to something, and I don't like the feeling of "better play it before it gets pulled".

Still, a very nice value - just not the way I prefer to engage with paying for gaming content. (I don't mind for TV with Netflix though.)

Personally I recently cancelled mine because if I don't play anything on it in a month it feels like a waste and I don't want to force myself to play the games on it to make it feel like it was worth my money, even at 5 bucks.

This is funding their studio acquisitions. 10 million paying subscribers is great. if everyone is paying for this and xbox live, even better.

Also Xbox gamers have been pre conditioned since to spend money. It's been that way since the original Xbox.

First response to the thread was negative. Obviously SaucyJack SaucyJack was making a lighthearted joke and OP did kick things off with a comparison which always ruffles feathers, but there are people here that are account suiciding over the mere notion that this service might be doing well. Here's my question, and maybe some of the more level headed anti-Gamepass members that haven't been sent to the ranch can try to answer it for me.

Why do you care if Gamepass is a success or not if you

a) are not an Xbox/PC gamer and can't/don't use it

b) refuse to ever use the service and haven't even tried the $1/month deal to see if it's as bad as you think

I'm curious how long it can remain at $15 a month (or less if you used the $1 cheat codes) and I'm also curious how it will evolve as the new studios ramp up. That's not my problem though, it's Microsoft's problem. Right now it's among the best deals going in gaming and I'll use is as long as it is. It's not like you can't cancel the service if things change so I don't get the negativity at all.

Opinions like that of E Explosive Zombie and people that generally dislike recurring payments are absolutely reasonable. They've weighed their options and chose what works best for them.

Because it encourages incentives for microtransactions and lootboxes

How?

It's just a bunch of normal games just like any storefront, only you already paid for all of it so you can install anything there. You literally have to go looking for DLCs on the PC app.

hpxt2wC.jpg

The console version is even less intrusive. All Gamepass games just appear in your game list as ready to install and again, you have to go over to the store to look at DLC and add-ons for the games.

A chunk of that 10 million subscribers has got to be most likely from that $1 per month deal or that stack and conversion promotion up to 3 years. Man it was on slickdeals front page for almost a month with over 2 million views lol. Many gamers and non gamers took advantage of it big time during that promotion including myself.

I've used the service, and the PC version is not even close to as good 1v1 as xbox version in terms of games being offered.
Second thing it doing well and making profit will be a deciding factor for what MICROSOFT decides to do in terms of content going forward from outside sources.

MATT from the other place who I believe works at Microsoft straight up this same month mentioned Gamepass is not profitable and the company knows this and understands that. They are in a similar stage Netflix was when it first started in the early days.
The issue will be what happens when certain studios making first party don't help prop up numbers like they should but third party picks up the slack? Like red dead 2 was not cheap. Nor was DMC V which is why it was not available for PC on gamepass same with Red dead 2.

Currently looking at the streaming landscape in entertainment, netflix is slowly moving away from BIG movies being on their platform. Now they are trying to do actual releases for new movies. Before they would pay for the movie to be on the store for certain time before it expires. But now they are publishing/ funding those movies. Making them netflix movies.
They lost a ton of money with Marvel/Disney licenses they paid for. WHich is why they didn't continue on with marvel shows, and are letting Marvel/Disney films expire because of Disney +.

This is the game Gamepass is going to be playing and have to deal with going forward. Hopefully they rely more on first party to prop up the service.
Because competition in this space is happening. Thats another thing your going to see later this year from "other" publishers. Some will make deals with Microsoft like Ubisoft is doing for smart delivery. But you may see some third party games release on Gamepass.

And if it's high profile its not going to be cheap for Microsoft.
Once this new gen starts and more game services start popping up it's going to be similar to whats happening in tv/film between Apple/Amazon/Netflix/disney etc.

Nothing you said is wrong. I actually agree with you. PC version is still lacking, but it's all included in the $1 offer (I almost exclusively play on PC or Switch). I also agree that the service could shape Xbox Game Studios offerings going forward and the Netflix comparison has always been valid, expecially with the new studios Xbox Game Studios has collected. Netflix was a pioneer for this model though and Microsoft has several other services to look at when deciding what steps to take going forward and maybe dodge the potholes. For example they can look at the massive tanking Netflix took when they decided to go woke with their content and maybe decide not to alienate a portion of their user base. They also started as a giant corporation while Netflix did not, so they can weather any hiccups that would have taken a bigger hit on Netflix. Of course the downside to that is if shareholders decide it's not worth it, it's already dead. The thing is, not even Microsoft MATT knows yet how this will turn out despite having more information than us.

Like you, I have a ton of "what if"s floating around in my head, but I don't have any concrete conclusions. In the meantime I don't understand why there is so much negativity towards it, especially from people that can't or just won't use it..

I was more curious about people that haven't or refuse to touch it but have still come to absolute conclusions about the service and it's destiny and are seemingly angered by the prospect of the service doing well. I don't read you as being unreasonable about it or annoyed by the possibility that it might succeed. You've also used it which is a much better position to base discussion from.

All Microsoft's biggest Shareholders have run or are running Microsoft, .. along with all the other shareholders are unlikely to try form some allegiance to force Microsoft to change direction.

Microsofts major competitors are Amazon, Google, Apple.. all of which make regular multi billion dollar loss leading long term investments. The investment in GamePass is a long term investment and is getting the kind of take up that almost guarantees its future ( unlike windows mobile groove music etc). Within 4 years this looking to be 50-150 million subscribers.

So you still had to pay for 3 years of XBL to do that. I think they see that as the same big poule of recurring revenue income for Xbox

Jesus, Matt is an indie developer that used to work with Xbox hardware but that's it. He is in no way affiliated with Microsoft, he doesn't even have access to either next gen console.

Of course Game Pass is not profitable yet. They are in the early phase, right now they lock people into the ecosystem. And they need to beat Sony in hardware to get profitable with Game Pass. It's a connected strategy, Game Pass will sell consoles, consoles will gain more Game Pass customers, until they break even. Ultimately it's about games. First party content is the cheapest to add to Game Pass and the most important to sell consoles.

Didn't know Matt stopped working for Microsoft. I believe he still knows things though through people he knows who still work with the company. But my point still stands that similar to netflix they will have an issue with third party licensing if their first party doesn't bring people in as the main selling point.

I think the main issue and disconnect for me mind you and this is strictly my opinion on the matter is the perception that Gamepass is the best value. It is on paper an amazing value for what your getting. But thats only if your into what Microsoft puts out and is able to procure from third party's. Right now yes getting Red dead 2 is a great get, so was DMC V. But then why are they not on PC Gamepass?> And that would be because they would have to have a Windows store version for PC. And that would cost a fuck ton more.

Like the Indie games that are on there is great for people who play those. I don't play a lot of indie games anymore because I get humble bundles, and for the most part am kind of sick of indie games. The market is too flooded IMHO.

The thing that made me get Gamepass was Gears 5, and Halo. And gears 5 was not super great. It was good, but there was something off about that game I couldn't put my finger on and I LOST interest. I did keep my sub for Outer worlds and that was a blast.

But then there's a drought of things to play again.

Thats going to be their issue, is first party High quality content that keeps people there. Right now their franchises are exhausted, and their Big AAA games from new studios I believe are still a ways off. I hope Shinobi from the other site is right in whats been hinted at coming. I hope we get some amazing quality games from them.

But like a lot of people on the fence for me it's still wait and see.

from Satya Nadella himself.

For comparison:
Ps Now is at 1 million
EA Access is at 5 million
I'd take these numbers with a grain of salt. And well, PS Now and EA Access subs pay way more than $1. To comprare monthly revenue or the amount of full price subs would be a more fair comparision.
You can bet your balls Sony will offer something similar. Too many subscribers to ignore. Though they may just evolve PS+ to sort of match it.
They already have PS Plus+PS Now, that generate way more money than Gold+Pass.

Good thing Game Pass is more than a $1.

Do you people even try anymore?

Profit and Revenue for subscription is irrelevant. The key metric is Subscribers and Subscriber growth, otherwise Sony will be worth more than Netflix, because Sony generates more than Netflix. Netflix is worth more than 2X of Sony.

If Sony wants to be relevant in a Cloud/Subscription gaming market, they need to aggressively invest in their service and prepare to be in the Deep Red for the short term.

Who fucking cares?

What revenue they generate doesn't matter to you as a consumer.

I don't give a fuck if they make 10.00 or a billion, as long as they are giving me games to play I will keep subscribing, if they stop, so will I.

Jesus Christ.

10 million subscribers and they are all wrong.

I will say the revenue generated matters to me as a consumer because if it's not a successful business model that means we may see less games come to the service in the future, or we may see the monthly fees go up like how Netflix is constantly upping their monthly fee. Right now it feels too good to be true.

yeah. I don't get it. Why is he so damn concerned? is he a large Microsoft investor maybe?

They already do, they just aren't as aggressive with it. They barely do any marketing it outside of within the PlayStation ecosystem and first party games don't launch on the service.
one of the biggest values on Game Pass is being able to play 1st party games Day 1... Sony does not offer this

Again there is zero data to prove this. The economics of game pass have not changed the design of any game. All the trends you speak of were already happening long before Game pass. FUD to the max

it's right but it's legitimate fear imo
