Xbox has made "largest investment in Game Pass to date" this year, countering recent criticism of subscription service's value

GP has directly effected the quality of those games. You've had multiple Devs from the likes of Arckane and Machine Games saying that there's less motivation from the teams to create a great product when they know a large chunk of the audiance are paying just pennies to play their games for only five minutes. I'd probably feel exactly the same.

I have GP, yet I still chose to buy games I want to play. Mostly on PS5 or Steam.
Is there any proof to this? These one-off comments from developers are ridiculous. Gamers pay nothing to play free-to-play games and spend way less time on them than other games but that doesn't mean devs working on free-to-play games aren't motivated to make those games as good as they can. It's their job to make the best product they can, and they are being paid to do that, this is their motivation. This way of thinking makes literally no sense; it's like an artist not being motivated to make good music because people can listen to their songs on YouTube for free. Most creatives don't think like this, and if they did, they would just find another professional.

No, they haven't said any such thing. And he probably give you a link where the developer says one thing.

In the live stream, the developer said that when you know your game is going to be on GamePass, you also know that subscribers have a ton of games to choose from and try, and you have to make sure the start of the game hooks the player and captures their attention, because otherwise, they're likely to turn their attention to another added game.

However, the media saw a huge amount of clickbait in the phrase "they'll play for 5 minutes and move on to something else."

More than happy to be called out and proven wrong. The statement of "They jump in for five minutes and hop back out" is valid from what we've seen.

If you think otherwise, then please share comments from Devs that say the opposite.

I'll own that shit if I'm wrong.

Not even Damage Control Articles can escape the "Game Pass Effect."

I wonder if these articles are a sign that the new price hike is closer

Phil Spencer thought that many GamePass subscribers would do the same, subscribe and continue buying games.

Most stopped buying games, and those who continued buying games bought them from other stores, platforms where rentals weren't available.

It makes perfect sense for hardcore GamePass subscribers, and because they're hardcore and have more platforms, to only buy from Steam and the PSN Store.

But I imagine that at MS, there's no room for criticism of the "grand leader's grand plan," which is always right.

Subsidize GamePass and Xbox console so that profits from game sales go entirely to Sony and Valve.

Well tbf, it's all they have at this point. If they were to announce the cancellation of Gamepass tomorrow the console would basically be Dead by the end of the month.
Incorrect. Microsoft now have exclusives that they could keep ONLY on their consoles, and would make a VERY compelling case for people to want to buy an Xbox. Games are all that matter. Xbox has them but because gamepass doesn't make money like Microsoft needs for the investment they're putting into it, they put their games everywhere meaning their console is basically useless.

You have to go to the original source, the complete interview with the specific developer, and try to steal it for yourself.

Context is important, and that phrase ("they play for 5 minutes...") fits into that context: the concern about creating games that don't hook the player from the very beginning, causing them to turn their attention to other games that are continually released through the subscription.

It wasn't even a criticism of the service or the general GamePass user base. It was simply a way of emphasizing the importance they place on making a game that hooks the player from the very first moment when it's launched on a service where players have access to a wide variety of games at all times, which is a completely legitimate and logical concern.

No- money is all that matters. Exclusives on Xbox will never be a thing again so long as Nadella remains MS' CEO and the priority remains money over identity.

I think it's much worse... You can't keep lying, because the more you lie, the worse it will be when you admit Game Pass is a failure.

I believe they gave Phil Spencer a fixed, non-extendable deadline to make "Xbox/Game Pass profitable," and so if you lie, you know reality will set in at some point.

You can't do the same thing as 10 years ago:
You lied that Game Pass is profitable? Ten years ago, it was easy; you knew the office's money would cover the Game Pass losses "forever."

Now, if you lie that Game Pass is profitable, in 2027 the business will be shut down, and everyone will know you're a liar. There is no longer PR supported by "infinite money", now if Phil's strategy fails there is no money from the Office to keep the strategy running and give Phil space to lie that "it is profitable"

Is me jumping in for 5 minutes to a game I would never have played worse than just not playing it?

There's potential it's great and I play for much longer, but would never have done so without Game Pass.

they play more games for fewer hours, 5 hours less a month on average than PlayStation gamers

I'm making it up for them single handedly. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

But let's be honest, most of that is figures from a more casual crowd, folks on GAF probably spend more than 12hrs gaming each weekend.

It doesn't count when you are farming for MS points...to pay for GP. Everyone knows why Halo is sitting on the menu screen.

Now don't get me wrong...I respect the commitment.

Yeah, because they want to kill the console and move everyone to subscriptions.

Stupid because the market is not ready to completely kill off consoles.
