Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

This is 2 years too late to be a megaton lol Will that many people really care after playing 1-2 games?

This is my feeling. the streaming and online play are the highlights here but I don't get why so many people are excited about this. Again very cool feature, one that I would like to see on PS4 but how is this a "Megaton"? I had the same on my PS3 and at the time it sounded really cool but I only played about 2 PS2 games on it. My xbox 360 has been under my TV since I got my PS4 and other than streaming Netflix and occasionally playing Rockband I NEVER TURN IT ON. People bitch new games being cross gen yet vigorously masturbate to backwards compatibility. I will never understand it.

I mean, this is the list of shit that works in the preview program as soon as it's turned on. this isn't going 'live' until this holiday season. So, not sure why people are super upset at a limited list for testing.

This thread is hilarious. Backward compatibility for a subset of Xbox 360 games (not a native HW solution to cover all games) on a 2 year old console is a "Game Changer"? Really? I mean really! So suddenly being able to play your old games that you've already been playing for 10 years is going to change the tide in the console war. LOL. I really can't believe what I'm hearing.

Sure, BC is nice and it makes upgrading for those who HAVEN'T yet a bit easier to swallow. But this isn't 2013 guys. If this was announced prior to XB1 launch, that would have been a game changer. But in 2015 with the sales deficit XB1 is in, you guys are saying the killer app to make people upgrade is not a cool new feature or new exclusive software, but BC with old Xbox 360 games?! Hilarious.

With all the HD remasters going around and the trickle of releases that X360 gets currently, BC is even less important. But since when has BC been a game changer? PS3 launched with the ability to play ANY playstation game from PS1 and PS2 day 1 and did that do anything to allow it to dent into X360 marketshare? It was so valuable in fact that Sony removed it within a year and nobody even blinked. Microsoft tried SW emulation before too with X360 and how many people bought a 360 to play Halo on Xbox? Oh how can I forget how the Virtual Console allowed the Wii to win the last generation console war and kept the WiiU in the hunt this generation. Yeah...game changer

dude take a chill pill, you sound mad salty.

I honestly can't see how this is considered anything more than a nice-to-have feature. This is especially true because it is only coming out 2 years after the start of the new gen. Anybody that is still interested in their old games has a 360 to play them. Hell I've got two of them. All this does is give you a little more space under the TV.

Sure makes me glad I sold my 360 last month. AND KEPT MY COPY OF LOST ODYSSEY LIKE A GDAMN GENIUS OMG I FORGOT I DID THAT!!!!!

It's really cool of them to do this, a bit late but still one of those leg up things. Love that they were the ones able to take a shot at Sony for once and say "we wont make you pay for it again." A lot of the games on demand or w/e its called for sony has been kinda off putting personally.

They said that all games should work but that they require permission from the creators before implementing the game.

It makes sense that they wouldn't want to risk leaking this announcement by reaching out to every dev before making it.

If this was the factor, then they wouldn't have issues with internal studios and should have those.

I mean they had to reach out to Bioware for Mass Effect. Why no ME2 and ME3?

It sounds like optimised emulation like they did with Xbox on 360. The effort is on MS's end but the final say is on the publisher to give the final OK. Now with remasters they also have an extra incentive to refuse. BUT.
I'm hoping at a minimum to at least see all or near-all of the Microsoft lineup. Which would mean I'd get to play Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey on it, and thus actually get through Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey... well, I could polish up the last few achievements if the fancy strikes I guess.

Huge, and good stuff.

Why do I have to download the game? Why can`t they be played from the disc, like the 360 does?

There's probably some sort of emulation wrapper needed. Given that it doesn't require work from the devs though, it's obviously some kind of universal conversion process.

Well, this means I'll finally pull my finger out and buy an external hard drive.

Good move Microsoft, let's see how this develops. We've come along way since launch!

The wording still implies each title has to be supported manually, otherwise all games would just work already.

So it's basically PS2 Classics on PS3 but not having to pay for games you already own. Cool...but no guarantee all my games will be supported.

its free of charge for publishers to approve. no extra cost. so it would most likely have many good games

Then why isn't that list bigger?

cause it just got announced?

so, is this emulation like the terribly flawed BC on Xbox 360 (it was amazing tho. to emulate a, then powerful, x86 console)?
or they are just making x86 ports of these games?

Wait what!

So why cant I just play whatever game?
Darn it, with ninja gaiden 2 360 version and scale bound I would
maybe buy an xbox one .

That is pretty cool though, that they work with firmware standard features. Easier way to stream/capture/screenshot 360 exclusives or past gen games that might not have PC releases.

Just been watching this in a bar in London. When they announced this, the entire room gasped, including people who were pretty anti Xbox one before the show started. One guy mimicked a home run. Even with a limited list (and didn't they say 100 titles by this Christmas?) this is basically a straight up system seller for me and many other people. Never saw it coming.

And it's sure as shit better than PSNow.

Then why isn't that list bigger?

"They need permission to activate it"

I guess they didn't want to go around asking every dev and risk it being leaked? I don't know, we'll see how it plays out in the upcoming weeks. I see no reason for devs not to give permission (after all.. it's free money for them) so we should see a lot more than what's currently available if that's true.

The real important question is: Is it backwards compatible compatible? Can I play Ninja Gaiden Black on a Bone?

EDIT: Just saw the list. Bwahahahaha. Nevermind then.

He's right though. It's sad that this is something that people are getting hyped about instead of being pissed that it took them this long to implement it. If they can do this shit now, they should have been preparing this type of thing at or around launch. People shouldn't be cheering for this shit, they should be rolling their eyes and saying "Well it's about fucking time."

It's about as sad to watch as the whole Sony "You don't have to constantly have your console connected to the internet to work." hype that happened a few years ago. This type of shit doesn't deserve cheers. This is the second generation in a row that Microsoft is pulling the exact same shit with BC and people are eating out of their hands.

Can anyone find the next page of this webpage ?

So just to make sure I'm understanding things right, if you put a supported game's disc int XB1, it doesn't actually play off of the disc, but gives you the license to download the digital version?

When is the update for us preview folks going live? They said preview members would be able to try this out today but I'm just wondering if it's already live.

was i the only one listening when he said you put in the disc & download the game? lol

Fine by me. As long as I'm not paying, I can work with it. I take this as a big f u to remasters. I'm just going to Gamestop to hoard 360 games instead of paging for remasters of games I haven't played.

I am very happy about BC coming as I will have access to those awesome 360 exclusives and arcade titles. I wonder how it's going to handle custom soundtracks. I know that BC for OG Xbox - > 360, it didn't.

And speaking of OG Xbox, any chance that emulation will be included in there too? If not, then that's one reason to keep that 360 (or OG) around.

Incredible they actually did it , i have always been into sony consoles from the ps1 but this means a lot of people with a huge collection of x360 games can peacefully move to x1 without having to dump off well collected games library.

And ms can focus much better on x1.

I am sure most of the publishers will give permission to it but have doubts on greedy ones like 2k , gearbox etc who tend to go for full re-release instead.

Now the ball is in sony's court , Wonder what they will do about this....

That's my understanding. You will have to keep the disc in the console to act as a DRM check though.

We'll know when they release the actual feature, the list right now is small but will grow as long as MS doesn't basically drop the feature like they did with Xbox BC on 360 eventually.
